Speaking of round things, this is what the stitches of a cornea transplant look like. Redditor Philawesomeraptor's girlfriend underwent a cornea transplant for a condition called keratoconus, which causes structural changes in the eye, drastically altering vision. Corneal transplants are the most common type of human transplant surgery, and also have the highest success rate. These are the stitches holding the new cornea up, and I have to say they look pretty striking. These seem to be the type that dissolve over time, so let us marvel the gossamer threads while they're still there ;)

If you happen to live in Ann Arbor, Michigan you might encounter a sweet chalk based creature caught in whimsical and imaginative scenes across the city. The creation of artist David Zinn, Sluggo has appeared in chalk on the streets, walls and ledges of Ann Arbor since 2008, and even has his own Tumblr blog called "Sluggo on the Street." One can't help but smile at the creatures antics around the city, which range from cleaning up the streets to just enjoying the local environment. He was concieved

"originally as a chalk drawing of a child that took a strange turn. He has since developed a widespread reputation as a semi-subterranean jack of few trades with flexible personal architecture and a fondness for flying pigs."

Jump past the break to see more of Sluggo and the clever ways in which he interacts with other denizens of the city, and yes there's even a pig or two ;)

Who needs a trail when you can walk amongst the treetops themselves. Lying deep within the Bavarian Forest National Park in Germany is Baumwipfelpfad, the longest tree-top walk in the world. Spanning 1300 meters that brings you up an impressive 25 meters above the ground, the walkway's grand finale ends at a massive egg shaped dome 44 meters high with a 360 degree spiral staircase that gently leads you down, all the while offering breathtaking views of the natural beauty surrounding it. As if that weren't enough, several adventure stations are spaced throughout the pathway incuding a narrow wooden plank that challenges patrons to test their balance and rewarding you with a view of the earth 50 feet below. Personally I'm not one to commune with nature, but I'd love a chance to live like an elf for a day ;)

Now this is what I call green art! Although I more than appreciate the natural beauty of trees, the level of detail in their steel wire counterparts by Wisconsin artist Kevin Iris is simply stunning. Iris became obsessed with growing real bonsai trees when he was younger, and that process involves shaping the way in which the bonsai grows by using stiff wires wrapped around the branches. In this way, one can "train" the bonsai to grow in the right direction. These day' he forgoes the bonsai and creates his own Steel Trees out of countless wires coiled in around itself. Personally I love the detail in both the branches and the root systems. It shows he's spent long hours learning the structure of the real thing before recreating it on his own ;)

At first glance, it may look like a delightfully quaint Victorian music box, however upon closure inspection you'll find an incredibly intricate Steampunk Laptop! As if the Hewlett-Packard ZT1000 running Windows XP and Ubuntu that powers the contraption weren't antiquated enough, the creators of this masterpiece added elaborate flourishes such as a clockwork casing under glass, engraved brass accents  claw feet (for stability and awesomeness), an antiquated copper keyboard and mouse, and even a customized wireless network card that only functions after a few twists of an antique clock-winding key. It's a veritable masterpiece worthy of any Steampunk menagerie. Just make sure you set the homepage to altavista for the sake of completeness ;)

It seems every other day some burger record is being broken. This time the record breaking came from the Black Bear Casino Resort in Minnesota, who created the world's largest cheeseburger! Clocking in at 2,014 pounds, the delectable behemoth also incudles 60 pounds of bacon, 50 pounds of lettuce, 50 pounds of sliced onions, 40 pounds of pickles, and 40 pounds of cheese. Guinness Records representative Philip Robertson verified the record breaking burger, calling the feat a result of "remarkable teamwork" and said the burger "actually tastes really good!" It took about 4 hours to cook the patty, and they needed to use a crane to flip it. Now that's what I call dedication to BBQ ;)

Today's LEGO post is this simply beautiful and massive LEGO Roman Colosseum! Built by certified LEGO builder Ryan McNaught, the level of detail in this over 200,000 piece creation is astonishing. The fact that he was able to make an oval structure out of square bricks is truly a feat, and a testament to Roman architecture. My favorite part after the Colosseum itself is the detailed marketplace sitting at it's base. It's a slice of LEGO life that shows a great attention to detail ;)

Now this is what I call a peanut butter cup cake! Apparently Williams-Sonoma is selling a jumbo sized Reese's Peanut Butter Cake for $79.95. Self-described as a moist, intensely chocolate cake that's layered with house-made peanut-butter filling and wrapped in a tender shell of dark chocolate, it seems this might be a winner while lasting you a whole lot longer than your average mini reese's peanut butter cups ;)

Now this is what I call a geological wonder. What you see below is a stunning aerial view of the Nabiytum Crater in Lake Turkana, Kenya, which is also the world's largest alkaline lake. The striking rounded shape rising out from the water is not due to something like a meteor strike, rather it is a caldera, the remnants of a collapsed volcano. Looking at it from above makes me want to play a particularly isolated game of Sim City at the center ;)

Studio Ghibli is so full of creativity that sometimes it spills outside of the movies and into everyday life. Take this amazing Howl's Moving Castle papercraft book that they published from 2004. Ben Millet managed to find a digital copy and printed it out, constructing the 3D castle in its entirety over the course of 72 hours over three weeks. It's an amazing feat for a beautiful piece. Best of all, the pieces of the castle actually move. Jump past the break to see a timelapse of the castle's construction and the meticulous effort it took to construct it ;)

Morning plussers, add a latin twist to brunch with these Eggs and Mexican Chroizo Grilled in a Bell Pepper Shell! It's a new way of cooking eggs that infuses it with flavor by simply cracking an egg into a bell pepper half and then grilling until set. The eggs end up taking the shape of the inside and the flames give it a smokey charred flavor which you can kick up a notch by adding Mexican Chorizo into the mix. Paging Dr. Seuss for his Mexican green eggs and ham chorizo ;)

Stellar Homicide

With the aid of a telescope at Mount Haleakala in Hawaii, researchers were able to observe a supermassive black hole in the process of devouring a star. Of course black holes have a penchant for sucking in stellar bodies, but what makes this significant is that it was observed from start to finish, giving astrophysicists precious new information on how the process looks like when it begins. This computer simulation shows the time period in which a star first begins its final ascent into a black hole. The strong gravitational forces tidally shred the star, ejecting some of its gases into space. Astronomers observe this energy release as a flare in uv and visible light as the gas falls back into the black hole. In any case with the data collected it looks like a cut and dry case for NASA CSI ;)

With a unique freehand style, artist Ramon Bruin is able to tease out the third dimension from two dimensional drawings with nothing but a pencil. From the tail of a snake to a precariously restrained candle, the models of his work seem ready to jump out of the page at you. I'm always a fan of optical art that doesn't require you to wear silly glasses ;)

Enjoy a simple lunch today with some Deep Fried Mashed Potatoes, it's cubed decadence that even a vegetarian can love. Formed from freshly whipped mashed potatoes filled in an ice cube tray, each one is then filled with it's very own cube of butter and then fried in batter to perfection. With a little decoration, these little guys would also make for great treats in your upcoming Minecraft party ;)

Celebrate your love of astronomy in perfect temporal precision with the Aquarius Planetarium, the world's smallest planetarium that sets the sun and six planets at the palm of your hand. Designed by Dutch watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw, each minute mechanical piece is arranged it show the planets orbiting the sun while also keeping track of the constellations overhead. Of course you can't expect to have the night sky on your wrist without paying a hefty price, and the twelve unique Aquarius Planetarium made meet that requirement, coming at $100,000 apiece. The rest of us plebeians will have to settle for darkened rooms and tea strained light beams, although that sort of pocket planetarium is beautiful in it's own right ;)
