5 simple steps for a better Google+ experienceEspecially puzzling for beginners is that they post something public and nobody answers. Then they think that the reports about Google+ being dead or a Ghost Town are true.
Myth: If you post public everyone can see your postPotentially true but not completely true.
Everyone can see it IF: a) they visit your profile
b) search for one of the words in your post
The truth is 99% of the people will have no idea you exist or posted something until they add you to their circles. Only then, people will see your post in their stream.
So the process to gain visibility is:
1) Create an interesting profile. (Add a photo, any photo).
2) Add people to your circles.
3) Visit their profile or read the stream and +1, comment, reshare their posts
4) Keep posting public (unless is something really private or circle oriented)
5) Thank your followers for their comments and re-shares on your posts.
And repeat steps 2-5 often.
Thanks for reading this post and let me know how can I help.
It is not a coincidence that both photos are showing Disneyland, because Google+ is also the Happiest Place on Earth.

Google Plus Rules of EngagementThese are not the 10 commandments. Just a basic list of things you should consider when you interact with others and what to expect as a result.
1) Followers are not a free gift granted for completing your profile.Unless you are a celebrity or a known brand you will have to build your own audience.
2) Signing up does not entitle you to interesting stuff streaming in your home page. All you get it's "What's Hot". Probably the most overrated content in G+. If you don't like it, you can remove it with the tool provided.
You will have to build your circles, follow people that post things you like, get rid of or reduce the noise of people that post things you don't like with sliders.
3) You must listen before you ask to be heard. At the beginning you won't even have an audience. Shouting like Donkey in Shrek
pick me, pick me won't do much.
Posting a lot won't give you a big number of followers.
Keep in mind that control of the conversation in G+ is tilted toward the reader, not the publisher. You need 2 to tango. And you can't force anyone to read your stuff.
4) You reap what you sow.Fill out your
PROFILE and add a
PHOTO. Publish 5 interesting posts about things you like to talk about (not what you want to sell). And go your merry way to find people.
If you want to be noticed +1 their posts (not all of them), comment on what you like, re-share if you want to tell others about this discovery and add the person to the appropriate circle.
If the person likes your profile, posts and comments, they will add you back.
Adding back is not mandatory in Google+. I might like you because you are a great singer, but you might see no reason to follow me.
Remember: every one is in control of their own stream by deciding who to add, who to ban and the content they want to see.
5) Shine by your posts not your commentsThe post owner is the host. He is opening the door of his house but not for you to become the new owner.
Comments should be brief and to the point. Discussion is encouraged but any action that makes you take the stage will be seen as rude. If you wish to further interact with a particular person just send them a private message rather than start a conversation within the conversation.
The quality of your posts will be reflected by the +1s, comments and re-shares you receive. Do not blame G+ for people not reacting to your post. You obviously are doing something wrong. Penalty: Go back to 4). :)
6) Only after you are recognized as a valuable member of the community, you will be able to do branding through pages, communities and expand your businessGuy Kawasaki calls it the NPR model. He says we watch the telethons because the rest of the time we get quality. If all you do is post to get a sale, you won't go far.
7) When resharing give credit to the author and the person who made you aware of the informationThanks +author. Via or h/t (hat tip) +resharer. Never copy/paste someone else ideas.
8) If you have nothing nice to say just keep it to yourselfBelieve me it's not worth the annoyance and the bad reputation. No matter how right you are if you tell someone off, you will be labeled a troll.
Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. (Mark Twain). There are too many other posts that deserve your attention. Just move on.
9) Do not forget about the low hanging fruitThose who have 100,000 followers attract a lot of comments and share a lot of valuable information. Follow them.
But if you only circle them and comment only on their posts with the expectation to be noticed rapidly, you are in the wrong place. Your comment will be drowned in seconds. Everyone is looking at the shining star not scrolling through 500 comments.
You should be searching for smaller crowds that give you a chance to be seen.
10) Expand your circlesFrom the book Consequential Strangers by Melinda Blau.
Strangers provide novelty and information, shape our identity, and open us to new opportunities. They help keep us healthy and are invaluable when we’re sick. They fuel innovation, propel social movements, hasten the flow of new ideas, and are vital in times of uncertainty.Stop saying "no" to new and different. Embrace the experience. Learn to accept different points of view. Start thinking about these little exploratory expeditions as adventures. Some will be strange or duds, but most of them will be interesting and even wonderful. Don't miss the opportunity to expand your circles.

Starting tips to unlock Google+ hidden treasuresSo you heard about Google+. This fantastic new social "something" that gives you access to the world and still allows you to control who sees your posts. You can share your passions with others and spend hours being entertained while expanding your knowledge, horizon and circles.
You sign up. Skip all the tutorials (how difficult can this be?). Skip creating a profile (can do it later). Jump straight into it (that
share what's new box looks inviting) with a message to the world "Hello, I'm new here." or "Add me please....".
You wait a minute... nothing....3 minutes... nothing....5 minutes.... this is a ghost town, I'm out of here. Why did this happen?
Did anybody see your message? If you are under 18 your privacy settings say that only people in your circles can contact you or comment in your posts. If you have circled zero people guess how many will be able to reply to you? If you are over 18
only people who are following you (added you to their circles) will see your message in their home page (the main place for reading posts).
Before posting you need an audience willing to read your posts.1) Time to fill out that profile if you have not done so. It's pointless to invite people to join/follow you if they don't have an idea who you really are.
Remember: First impressions really count. This is what people will see when they first meet you. Pick a photo (get rid of the blue head). Share a little more information than just gender.
2) Click on "Find people" button. On the right column you will see options to search for people you already know. Contacts from your email accounts, classmates (if you added schools), coworkers (if you added workplaces), other networks.
3) How do you get strangers to be followers? The new option is communities. This are interest based groups. They can be public or private. Free to join or request to join.
a) Try typing one of your interests in the Google+ searchbox (just below the black bar). Then switch the everything button to communities.
If you find something that attracts you, go to the community and join. Make sure you are comfortable with the community being public.
Public means that everyone will be able to see your posts to that community.
Everyone not only the community members.
b) Read All Posts section.
c) +1 the ones you like. Write some meaningful comment longer than 1 word. And add people that you would like to have in your circles.
Congratulations! All the participants in this post will now be aware that you exist. They will see your name and will get notified that you just +1d or commented. They will be curious about who you are and look at your profile.
d) hopefully you filled out your profile and some of them decide to add you to their circles.
Warning: Do not mindlessly +1 every post in the hope that people will see you. Believe me they will see you and mark you as someone to be ignored. Your comments should be positive. You are trying to earn friends not enemies.
Note: Some people recommend using the "nearby" feature on mobile devices to find people that are located near you. I do not recommend it until you clearly understand the consequences. It is a little bit like blind dating.
Listen first. Now that you are following some people your stream will start to fill up with their posts. Continue to +1, comment on their posts to gain visibility and followers. Reshare those posts that deserve a +10.
Warning: Do not reshare every post otherwise the value of your reshares will decrease rapidly.
Reading other people posts will allow you to learn what is valued, what is a good post, what is a bad one. How people interact and etiquette in Google+.
Keep expanding your circles by searching and exploring other things that interest you.
Start postingBy now you should have a small audience. Publish a few posts and see your followers reaction. When they +1, comment or reshare your post, thank them.
Unless your post is for a select group due to its content, just publish public. Circles are mostly used to sort out the reading. People will figure out to which reading circle you belong.
It is true that you could target audiences by using circles, but the fact is that as your circles grow it will become impossible to ask everyone that adds you their own particular interests. Also I might have circled you for your cartoonish posts, but later discover that I am also interested in your French cuisine ones. I might have totally missed the later ones if your sharing is very limited to each group.
Note: Also public posts have unlimited reshare possibilities and ripples. Limited posts have restrictions.
Hope this was not too long to read. This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have not talked about the controls that are available (some day I will), notifications, photos, videos, pages, recommending websites or news articles, hangouts, events, local, integration with Gmail, Docs, YouTube, maps and search.
Google+ is really a must have and a window to a new world. Expand your circles and engage!

Google+ puts you in control. Do you need a manual?https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1UwTuJGa5Dj6Qd3ZDoLeVYqZfwFuvFniKoSrOlHRFVU0/editWhen people ask you what is the difference between Facebook and Google+... asked them what is the difference between driving a car and sitting in the passenger seat?
They might look very similar when you enter the car but you can't really compare the experience. Where would you rather be? In control of your destination or just coming along for a ride?

Do not forget to build your personal circlesGoogle+ circles concept was introduced in June 2011 along with the new social network. Communities were introduced in December 2012.
For 18 long months every new Google+ user was instructed to search for posts that fit their interests and start adding people to their circles. One by one, painfully slow. And because we were trying to pigeonhole people into the right circle, we spent lots of time trying to figure out what their interests were. In Summary:
getting to know each person in our circle was a goal. With the arrival of communities new users were told to just join a community. A much simpler process and you meet hundreds in one shot. Ghost town problem perception solved.
Advantage: Everyone in a community joined because they are interested in the subject, so the guessing game about what someone wants to read is over.
Disadvantage: Now we only get to see one part of each person. Communities are one-dimensional. The personal attachment is replaced for a group attachment. The individual is lost in the collective.
For those who have been here since the beginning, communities brought some conflict on how to share. Post to communities or circles or both. But at least we have two different type of audiences. Group oriented and personal.
Unfortunately some new users are now solely engaged through communities and have less personal interaction leading to limited satisfaction.
If you want to enjoy the total Google+ experience you really need to build your circles. Pick the people that you like most in your communities and add them to your personal circles. Also choose people from your streams. Now you will start seeing not only what they post to the community but all the other public posts. +1, comment, reshare. Your engagement will improve. You will get to know people better as individuals with various interests and you will be sharing at a more intimate level. Public and private.
Communities are not a replacement for circles.
Communities purpose is to follow interests.
Circles purpose is to follow people.

Embracing life in G+ Planet . 10 basic steps.G+ is Life. And life is complicated.
It 's not just about playing games and staying inside the bubble.
It's about managing your personal and business profiles. Taking risks. Stepping outside your comfort zone. Growing,
Being social with strangers is never easy. It requires accepting different opinions, tolerance and being professional.
Like the Beatles used to sing
"life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend"Step 1: Fill out your profile. First impressions really count. Pick a photo. Share a little more information than just gender. Rather than type an introduction post to the world that will disappear from view in the first week, just type it in the introduction area of your profile.
Step 2: Start building your personal circles (you should group people based on where do you know them from). Do not add strangers yet.
"Find people" button (left menu). You will get options on the right column to search for people you already know. Contacts from your email accounts, classmates (if you added schools), coworkers (if you added workplaces), other connections. If you find nobody, send some invitations to let your friends know that you are exploring Google+.
Step 3: Create at least 5 PUBLIC messages representing what interests you. These posts will appear in your "posts" tab in your profile. Who will see them? Even though anyone can see them if they visit your profile only people who circled you will see it in their stream(home page).
So... what's the point? The point is that when you start adding strangers they will visit your profile and look at a "posts" tab that is not empty.
Step 4: Try typing one of your interests in the Google+ searchbox (just below the black bar). Switch the everything button to communities. Find some communities that attract you and join in.
Read the posts shown in the all posts area. +1 the ones you like. write comments longer than 1 word. And add the people that sounds interesting to the appropriate circle. Strangers circles are mainly to organize your reading activity and should separate interests.
Step 5: Start building new relationships. As you proceed through the previous step, people will start visiting your profile. Then decide to add you or not. Google+ is a unilateral platform. You decide who to follow and people will do the same.
Note: Some people recommend using the "nearby" feature on mobile devices to find people that are located near you. I do not recommend it until you clearly understand the consequences. It is a little bit like blind dating.
Step 6: Now that you are following some people your stream will start to fill up with their posts. Continue to +1, comment on their posts to gain visibility and followers. Reshare those posts that deserve a +10. Reading other people posts will allow you to learn what is valued, what is a good post, what is a bad one. How people interact and etiquette in Google+. Step 7: By now you should have a small audience. Publish a few posts and see your followers reaction. When they +1, comment or reshare your post, thank them. If people who are not in your circles comment, just add them to a circle.
When you post to communities make sure you post in the appropriate category. Owners can not move posts and most of the time they will be forced to delete it if the category is wrong, to keep the community organised.
Step 8: When you start feeling comfortable with posting and reading text. Start adding photos, videos, links.
Step 9: Explore other options. Play games. Organise Events. Participate in Hangouts. Create a page for your business. Go Local if you have a business physical location. View ripples. Do some circle management.
Step 10: Enjoy! Learn and expand your horizon. There's a whole world to discover. Welcome to Planet G+
Hope this was helpful to understand that Google Plus can be anything you want it to be. There is not one single way to use it. Depending on your goals there will be some methods more effective than others.
The above list tries to establish the sequencing that I believe is most effective when you start exploring. It was not the intention to explain in detail how to do each step. There are lots of guides and helpful tips out there. Just look for them.

Keep expanding your circles by searching and exploring other things that interest you.

Public Communities vs CirclesWhere do we post? My two cents on this issue.
Google+ community team has decided to put all posts under one tab in the profile. Therefore if we send the same post to different audiences the post will appear multiple times. This fact should not influence our posting decisions.
Google should provide a separate tab for community posts in the profile with the option to hide it.Google communities posts should not appear in the main streamI encourage everyone to send feedback.
Circles are suited for following people.
Communities are suited for following a particular interest.
UPDATE: Based on comment from Fraser below+Fraser Cain has issued a 30-day challenge suggesting that we only post to communities and stop posting outside of them
just to see how communities integrate into the posting strategy The reasoning is that if anyone wants space posts from Fraser all they have to do is join his community. And he does not need to post to his "space" circle. But we should not put our followers in the position of choosing all or nothing.Communities can not replace circles. They have different targets.
1) I might want to know more about Fraser's other interests not just the "space" guy.
2) I might neither have the time nor interest to read the posts of thousands of members talking about space.
3) I might like 5 favourite photographers, but now they own communities with 100s of photographers each. Should I join all of them? I better forget all my other interests because I would be looking at photos all day.
My view is that we should post to public and specific communities giving our followers options. It is their responsibility to shape their own G+ experience by managing the content received.
If they are interested in me they should put me in a circle and accept that I am a person with multiple interests.
If they are interested in a particular subject regardless of who is posting they should join a community and remove me from their circles.
Thanks for listening. Have a great weekend.

Why do I like Google Plus?Like in real life, the key is expanding your circlesYour social status has a lot to do with your environment and the influences you are exposed to on a regular basis. How often do you step or reach beyond your comfort zone? Talk to someone outside? Go somewhere foreign?
Google+ is the chance to step outside your bubble, because it allows you to connect with a whole world out there. People are meeting not only in hangouts, but in real life events What do you want to achieve by expanding your circle? New clients, better connections, more friends, more interesting activities, find the love of your life, just have some fun?
Get yourself here. Bring a friend if you need to. Start finding pockets of people, new venues, events, social and professional groups that you find intriguing. Find an excuse to join. Check them out. Wander in. Act as if you belong here as much as anyone else. Don’t feel like an outsider.
Most people will have no problem with you joining in the conversation. So pull up a chair, join a photowalk, a reading club, cook together and enjoy! Mingle, bump into interesting people intentionally. Start talking to new people everywhere you go. Smile more (I am certain you will). Open yourself up to conversations with strangers (just not creepy ones!). Start engaging more.
Stop saying “no” to new and different. Embrace the experience. Learn to accept different points of view. Start thinking about these little exploratory expeditions into adventures. Some will be strange or duds, but most of them will be interesting and even wonderful. Don't miss the opportunity to expand your circles. You will be wondering why didn't I discover this before?.
