Good vs Evil
This is slightly different one in that it's not the Sun but rather the clouds playing major role. Couldn't help but call it like this. It's the pure white of the cloud on left side against the dark one on the right that makes it...
BTW, it was this evening, some two hours ago over the Caribbean Sea...

Enjoy and check out rest of the Sunsets'n'Sunrises collection!

    Florida Strait
Well, at last something a bit more interesting... This is what we could see this evening while racing through Florida Strait... Oh... yes, my Second Officer begged me to mention that it was on his watch therefore he needs a credit for it. OK then, there you go Mariusz. ;-)

    Enjoy and share!

    Vesuvius - the crater
This is how it looks like inside that mighty volcano. It's not a spectacular photo, but it was quite challenging nonetheless. It's actually a panorama stitched from 6 different vertical shots and it was taken when peak was covered with clouds. Original file is very flat with next to no contrast and totally washed out colors. HDR wouldn't work as total dynamic range was only a fraction of what you can capture with single exposure. What you see here is result of heavy manipulation in Lab color space, invented by Dan Margulis and called "Picture Postcard Workflow" (with some minor adjustments by yours trully...).
    Enjoy!

    To Hell and Back

You could say that sometimes my job takes me literally to hell and back. Then again, sometimes I get to see Mother Nature's spectacles like this one below - a one hell of a reward...

This photo was taken outside Vlissingen in October. For those of you thinking "nice photoshopping" - sorry to disappoint, but only tweaks done to this shot were:
    - slight crop to straighten horizon
    - gentle correction to compensate barrel distortion
    - slight increase in contrast
    - sharpen
    - put frame around
Sometimes they so awesome that just don't need any serious tweaking...

    Sharing always appreciated

    Golden spiral...of thoughts
When it all seems a bit fuzzy and confusing, give it a time, follow the path that's been there for centuries and in the end it will take you to the brilliant solution. Don't rush it but don't give up either.

For all my friends seeking inspiration....

That's how the day started today over the US Gulf.

    Enjoy!

    Into the Unknown...
Prompted by my friend +Bogdan Szuta, I've decided to try what I can pull out of a rather dull and uninteresting shot that I grabbed yesterday. Below is the result.

Last few days were a bit busy, with visit to Houston and satellite breakdown (=no Internet access), but it's back to deep sea now and hopefully Atlantic will be as generous with it's sunworks as Pacific was.

    Grand Finale
After a sunrise like the one today (see previous post), I was half expecting to see gray and boring end of a day. I even sat down with my Sunday's treat (Vienetta ice cream) and started watching +Laura Shoe and her LR workshop she did with +creativeLIVE a couple of weeks ago. Then I looked outside my window and suddenly I knew that something's cooking... Half hour later the spectacle was in full swing.

OK, finally starting to get on with the photos. Here's the first one from the amazing Plitvice National Park, Croatia. Biggest challenge in taking this shot was to wait for the right moment when there's nobody walking and shaking the wooden walkway - task bordering on impossible given the number of visitors...

In this somewhat spectacular way, ended Today over Mediterranean. Tomorrow we'll make it to Naples and if all the tedious calculations are correct, we should be able to witness the Sun rising over Mount Vesuvio. Hope there will be some photographic opportunity there... ;-)

Technicalities: Nikon D800 with 14-24mm, three exposures handheld, manually blended using some of the techniques that you can learn about on +Jay Patel and +Varina Patel iHDR video workshop. Highly recommend, but beware, you do need to have some ground Photoshop knowledge...

    Sunrise... traditionally...
Tradition dictates that the only correct way to start the day is with the sunrise... So there you go. That's how today started.... ;-)

    The missed one (wide)...
Strange evening, strange sky, even stranger result... but there you go. Three shot stitch from yesterday's missed sunset... It's, well, strange... (and I still don't know if I like it)

Wow, looks like my yesterday's pic made it to "What's hot" list! This is really cool way to start the day... ;-)
I did get up early this morning and there are some good shots on my card, but I need to get some breakfast first, so in the meantime I present you one more that I took yesterday. Hope you like it.

    Enjoy and share!

Dark Clouds gather over the Confederation Fleet...
Yes, I'm talking Star Wars. That's a clear sign that I should've been in bed for quite some time now. But since I have to wait for e-mail confirmation.... ;-)

This is just a quick and dirty work on today's sunset, which proved rather disappointing. But then what's a LR for... ;-)

Anyway, confirmation received. Time to sleep. Good night good peeps!

    The Magic Hour
This is not the sunset per'se. It's precisely 15 minutes AFTER the Sun went below horizon. This is the time when magic sometimes happen as +Robin Griggs Wood said in her recent post...

How was this photo created you may ask? Well, in the normal circumstances I'd say the tripod is essential, but this is from the moving ship that is rollin'pitchin'n'vibratin, making handheld my only option. Fortunately it was bright enough to pull it off with wide angle lens at ISO 200 and 1/100th of a second. Post production wise: whether you choose to believe it or not, all I had to do was to increase the contrast...
Now, that's as close as it gets to Photographic Magic...

Robin - that little bit of magic is for you! ;-)
Enjoy and share if you like it!

    It's been a year...
Yep, I took this shot a year ago, but it feels like last week. Time flies when you're having fun some say. I'd say time flies regardless, so go and have fun... I've learned a ton of useful stuff thanks to you guys and it has been fun. I wish I could post more of the new stuff and more often, but I'm quite busy and finding time to sleep has been some challenge recently. Anyway, the adventure continues!

    BrainBug
I don't know why, but this one reminds me of that "brain bug" from Starship Troopers...
This was taken yesterday, before it went all red...

Technicalities: Nikon D300 handheld, post production in Lightroom 4.1RC and Nik's Dfine, Viveza, Color Efex (in that order). On this one I've tried to see if I can save substantial amount of post processing time by using plugins and how the result compares with using just LR. I'm happy to report that... both approaches have their pluses and minuses. ;-)

    Enjoy!

    Fourth of Two
The weather turned a bit on a US Gulf's waters and what was a nice and calm is now getting a bit windy. Quite often such weather is announced by interesting clouds. Add the Sun to it and you might just end up with rather spectacular sunset...

Technicalities: Nikon D800 with 14-24mm f2.8 lens set to 14mm and f:7.1, single exposure, handheld, ISO 200, shutter speed 1/320s to eliminate any chance for shake/blur.

This camera has such wide dynamic range, that quite often I find bracketing being not necessary. Even with scenes like this one I'm able to get all the details from just a single exposure. As to how exactly I go about it, I'm going to refer you to the very source: +Tony Kuyper has written some of the best tutorials there are and if you're not the reading kind then turn to +Sean Bagshaw and you'll get pretty much the same quality info in the video form. It won't cost you too much (I've spent around 100 bucks for both the PDF's and videos) and it will be best invested money if you serious about this stuff. Warning: you do need the Photoshop and some knowledge on how to use it though...

    Enjoy and share!

    Hopeless...
Why such name? I'm sure you know this feeling, when you work on a pic and the longer you do the more it seem to be going nowhere? This is one of those. It's just... well, hopeless!   ;-)

Nevermind. It was a good exercise. It's 5 exposures manually blended using luminosity masking (+Tony Kuyper  's way), then with gazillion of local adjustments with curves layers in luminosity blend mode. Final color restored in Lab mode. Details extracted with High-Pass in Overlay mode, partly masked for the sea (too many details there). Sharpening on two separate layers with classic USM in luminosity blend mode with twice as much strength for shadows than lights. No plugins were harmed in creation of this image.

    New Day over Pacific
Well, what do you know...Another spectacular sunrise for my collection and eye candy for you...

Photo tip: when shooting with the Sun in a frame, remove all filters and double check your lens for any fingerprints, dust speckles etc. This will minimize chance for flaring (the bright color rings) and help to keep good contrast. Some lenses are more prone to that effect than others, especially those with bigger number of optical elements and amateur grade lenses (they have less effective anti-reflection coatings). If there is nothing you can do and your lens just flares like hell - try to keep the sun in the center of the frame and recompose in post. Sometimes that helps...

    Have a great day everybody!

For my favorite (and re-forming) #breakfastclub

    The Missed One...
Aaaand I missed the sunset today... What's worse, I was standing there, watching the Sun go down and not being able to take a shot. You see, it was raining all day long and it was looking like there will be no (photogenic) sunset. But just as the Sun came close to the horizon, clouds have parted and we got this nice, misty, kinda cool sunset with the sky full of interesting clouds. Unfortunately, since we are at the equator area now, the air is very humid and bringing the camera out from air conditioned room will cause it to cover itself with condensation. So there I was, standing and watching both the sunset and my fogged lens. Typical...

However, by the time my lens cleared, I was able to shoot five frames and that's one of them.

BTW, in the tropics I use the same trick as during the winter - put the camera in a tight plastic bag and let it equalize the temperature without having contact with humid air. But it takes a few minutes... Lesson learned. ;-)

    Sunset No.4
Just like the sunrise today, sunset was also pretty boring (with emphasis on pretty perhaps). My internet link was down throughout the day, but when it came back... G+ got new face, +500px offered me a Plus account (although I'm still not sure whether I need to pay extra on top of what I've paid for the "Awesome" option, or if it's a cheaper option, positioned between "Free" and "Awesome"). Anyway, it's late and time to go to bed.

Photo tip: I like to place the horizon line by following the Rule of Thirds, but depending on the situation I'd give the larger part of the frame to the more interesting subject (clouds vs. waves). In this situation the choice was simple - there was nothing in the sky and reflections on the waves create nice triangular composition.

    Good night peeps!

Yet another example that it's worth waiting a few minutes after the sunset. Quite often the true spectacle starts 5, 10 minutes after the Sun has disappeared below horizon.
Patience is a great virtue. Also in photography...

On finding one's path... (long - ish)

Nope, it's not going to be about religion, although some would argue that Internet, mass media and commerce have become religion of Modern World, with their mobile phones, tablets and social networks... So what.

It's more about finding the path to follow through all that maze of awesomness that we dive in head-first every day. Me for example, I have waaay too many hobbies and they are all so time consuming (my lovely wife would also add that they're way too expensive, and of course she'd be right...). See, I like to play guitar (OK, not very well, but still), I also like to travel, scuba dive, ski, drive my car and listen to good music. But it was many years ago, when I was in the sixth grade of primary school, when on one of those lessons the teacher asked the class mysterious question: "What would you like to do when you grow up?". I replied that I'd like to be a photographer and funny thing - I don't remember much from that time, but that particular lesson is vivid in my memory as if it was yesterday...
Fast forward to University time. My room mate introduced me to a magazine that contained the most jaw-dropping pictures I ever saw. From that moment I had a dream to see one of my photos published in that magazine. It was National Geographic...
Needless to say that my career went on it's separate way from my dream. But all my today's hobbies and even my day-job recently, have one thing in common - they allow me to take photos. Some of them are great, some are mediocre and some have that sentimental value that makes them extremely important to me but not necessarily anybody else. Up until fairly recently, the only audience my photographs have ever received, was a few friends and family. Now I have an account on G+ and just today my number of followers went past 2500.
Of course some of those people only have me in their circles thanks to circle sharing, some due to their habit of following everybody and everything. But amongst them there is growing number of those who actually do find my photographs interesting and worthy their time. Some of those people are extremely talented photographers whose work I truly admire myself.
Thanks to G+ I have a fantastic audience. One that motivates me to push my skill even further and follow this path. One day perhaps I'll be as good as +Patrick Di Fruscia and also deserve my place in NG... Dream lives on...

There are many paths to follow. The one below leads home...
