EFF Takes FOIA Fight to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. - EFF filed a motion in a secret court.
This secret court isn’t in a developing nation, struggling beneath a dictatorship. It’s not in a country experimenting for the first time with a judiciary and the rule of law. And, as Wired recently noted, it’s “not in Iran or Venezuela, as one might expect.” No, the court is here, in the United States (it’s in Washington, D.C., in fact). It’s called the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (or the FISC), and it reviews the federal government’s applications to conduct surveillance in national security cases. It’s comprised of 11 district court judges from around the country, and its opinions and orders are the law of the United States, like other federal courts.
But the FISC is different from typical courts in one fundamental way: almost everything about the FISC is secret.1 In fact, just being able to publicly say that we filed a motion with the FISC is unusual. Most proceedings are done ex parte (in this context, meaning just with the government and the judge), and any non-governmental parties involved in proceedings are typically forbidden from ever disclosing it. Even when the FISC finds that the government has acted illegally, so far, that illegality has been been kept hidden from public scrutiny and accountability.

Investigators with the Oklahoma Attorney General's office have already uncovered evidence of businesses taking advantage of the recent tornado's devastation by price-gouging in the weather-ravaged region, including a grocery store accused of charging consumers $40 for a case of water.
Using a law known as the Emergency Price Stabilization Act, consumer protection investigators are teaming with local law enforcement to catch fraud as it happens. The law was passed after a tornado leveled the same region in 1999 and prohibits price increases of more than 10 percent on goods and services such as water and hotel rooms for 30 days after a disaster. It extends to 180 days for construction-related complaints.

I've completely gone from pillow flipping all night - to getting up, fanning the covers to cool the bed, and waving my pillow up and down in front of the fan, in the ice cold air conditioning - and then holding it on my face for about five seconds - because that's about how long it takes for the pillow to completely heat up.
Last night I turned the A/C on so low, and the fan on so high that the tip of my nose and both ear lobes froze numb - while the REST of me was on FIRE.
Poor hubby... lol

I ran across a perfect use case for HDR so I wanted to show you a comparison. I had to take a photo of the Stonewall Jackson restaurant in Front Royal, Va. for an ad. (Great food!) I had to take it that day but there was horrible backlight, it was dreary and actually raining! I had two cameras: a $700 Canon Vixia and my Note II.
I took a shot with the Vixia. That's what the scene actually looked like. Then we cleared the parking lot and I put my Note II on a tripod and took a shot using the HDR app. What it does is basically take three pictures: a dark, medium and bright one and then it combines the three to give you a perfect shot. You can adjust to taste before saving. (I didn't adjust anything. I took one shot, saw it was perfect and was out of there.)
I've seen +Trey Ratcliff praise HDR and +Craig Shipp highly recommended I get this app. Boy were they right!

Then we cleared the parking lot and I put my Note II on a tripod and took a shot using the HDR app. What it does is basically take three pictures: a dark, medium and bright one and then it combines the three to give you a perfect shot. You can adjust to taste before saving. (I didn't adjust anything. I took one shot, saw it was perfect and was out of there.)
I've seen +Trey Ratcliff praise HDR and +Craig Shipp highly recommended I get this app. Boy were they right!
