Your GMail address has a near infinite number of variations!

Did you know that your GMail address can be extended?

It can be a fantastic way to uniquely identify which source that gave away your address to a spammer, but more importantly - it helps you to filter your mail!

Let's say my address is mymail@gmail.com and let's say that I want to sign up for a newsletter for something useful - like a site for Silly Walk GIFs,

If I signup for the newsletter with mymail+SillyWalks@gmail.com- that is not only perfectly legal and working, it also means that the mail that arrives, has mymail+SillyWalks@gmail.com in the To: field.

So:
mymail@gmail.com
mymail+ebay@gmail.com
mymail+NYPost@gmail.com
mymail+ScaryWebSite@gmail.com
i.e.
mymail+SomeRandomKeyword@gmail.com

are all working, valid addresses which are uniquely identifiable by you.

Update
Wow, this post really took off. Glad you found it share worthy!

Caveats
I see many have pointed out that not all sites accepts the + in an email address, inspite of it being a legal character according to the specification.  What to do?  Complain!

If the spammers drop the +, and you always use it - you will still be able to spot them.  Fortunately, GMail already is wickedly good at spotting spam - so in this case, it could be detected as a sold address - unless the +extension is removed from the mail address, but then we are back at relying on GMail to flag it as spam.

It is true that this does not eliminate spam, but as you correctly observe - it helps for tagging and filing incoming email.

Another method is to register your own custom domain with email account support and configure your own individual email aliases without pluses.  This is not a free solution, though.

Works for MS mail too!
Big thanks to +Fred Ahrens who pointed out that the exact same mechanism works with hotmail.com and outlook.com as well.  It should work with Google Apps, but someone has to confirm that.

Many also pointed out that the +sub-address is a feature which is a part of the email standard, but it is likely that it won't work on many  custom domain mail address. Also, I didn't manage to get GMail to retrieve a +tagged mail from outlook.com

Thanks for all your feedback!

    Just before Christmas, I spotted an Aluminum Bluetooth Keyboard for Nexus 7 that snaps on as a Cover.  At less than US$25, I took a chance and ordered one from +DX+ (SKU: http://goo.gl/Pptmf) and posted about it (http://goo.gl/Lwwnm).

    It arrived yesterday, and here are some first impressions:

    Edit of Jan 10 post: Turns out the keyboard doesn't actually have an external aluminum frame, but it still is solid, and it still works well.
    Summary per Jan 28: Worth every cent.

    As a cover
    The keyboard is styled the same way as the Nexus 7, including a back covered in a black coating with similar dimples as found on the back of the Nexus 7, albeit not as many.  It fits snugly on to the Nexus 7 as a protective lid, although I think it is likely that it will dislodge from the N7 if dropped the combo to the floor, perhaps depending on the angle of impact.  The keyboard is most likely not made from mil-grade aluminum, and it flexes a bit if I exert some pressure to twist it - but not more than expected, and it feels solid enough.  The most important part as a cover - it does give solid protection for the display, without covering up buttons or ports.

    Docking
    The N7 drops easily into the slot and comes to rest at a fixed angle. It isn't stuck in place, so you can't really wave the pair about like a laptop - but it isn't wobbly either. I discovered one strange thing when docking it for the first time. If you put it into the dock section with the power/volume buttons on top - the magnet lock switches the N7 to sleep.  Hence, you have to insert it "upside down" to avoid the N7 snoozing - not that it matters, as the display auto rotates just fine.

    As a keyboard
    Touch-typing is out of the question, at least without practice. For me and my sausage fingers, it will be two to four finger use, I guess. No wonder as the width is about two thirds of the alphanumeric part of a regular keyboard. Key travel was surprisingly deep and pleasant, and I haven't noticed any double hits or missing hits so far.  I do find that I stare at the keyboard rather than the screen, but given that I haven't had much practice, that is to be expected.

    National keys was easy to configure for the device in Android, so even if my Norwegian letters can't be seen on the keyboard, they are where I expect to find them.  There also is an "Alt" key which works just like the Alt-Gr on a PC keyboard - giving me access to the remapped keys from the English layout.  The keyboard also has "Back", "Home" and "Search" buttons.

    Specifications
    The documentation is somewhat slim, but it is in proper English and covered the questions I had.

    The keyboard is water and dust proof, BT 3.0 compliant, works up to 10 meters away, can be on standby for 60 days and have an uninterrupted working time for 55 hours.  The Li battery is 160mAh, and recharged through a regular microUSB cable (not included) - and said to have a life expectancy of 3 years.  It is supposed to work between -10C and +55C, and be able to take 5 million keystrokes.

    It also supports Apple devices with iOS 4.x or later or any other device that is BT3 compliant!

    Summary
    It looks to be a decent piece of gear worth the money, but only time will tell how durable it is. It will take some time to get used to - but I do believe that it is a very nice asset.

    I'll post a followup in a few weeks, when I have time to get to use it some more.
    Meanwhile, take a look at the photos below :)

    Edit: +Ryan Coatta dug up a video review.

    Hi, and Thank You for visiting or following me on Google+!
    If you are new to Google+ - there are a few points to take note of...

    ► Google+ is not Facebook. Your old friends might not be here (yet), but that is okay, since Google+ exists to bring people together based on their shared interests, and not only by social connection.

    ► You don't have to follow people back if they follow you. On Google+, we don't have to be friends, but who knows - we might actually go from random commenters to become friends if we share a common interest, and if we like what the other have to share and say.

    ► Don't be one of the #blueheads ! Add a photo of yourself, or a drawing, or one of your cat. Fill inn a little info about yourself and your interests, roughly where in the world you are, and what else you might like to share.

    ► Do you want your Google+ experience to come alive? Find someone to follow! How, you say? Do you know how to Google? ;) You can search for stuff on Google+ too. Search for People, brands or keywords and browse among the results. Spot someone making a post you like? Make a circle and follow them!

    ► There are some people you absolutely need to follow. These people - among many others - share knowledge about how to get the most out of Google+. To mention a few: +Rahul Roy, +Shamil Weerakoon, +Euro Maestro and +Denis Labelle. Browse their shared circle posts to find more interesting people to follow.

    ► +1, Comment, Share, and Post - To become a valued participant, you need to participate! +1 and make comments in other people posts. Share posts that interest you. Post about stuff that interests you.

    ► There is no wrong way to use Google+ - but we all have our preferences. Personally, I'm not huge on wisdom memes and posts about how you slept or what you ate - well unless you had a weird dream, or took a #foodporn picture of something delicious, or shared the recipe. I prefer when people leave Facebook confessions on Facebook. I also like it when people are civil, reflected and care to post a little bit more than smileys, lols and wtfs.

    Again - Thanks for visiting! I hope you find Google+ as interesting and stimulating as I do!

    Brgds,
    +Lars Fosdal

    Delphi is dying and it's Embarcadero's fault
    ... or is it?

    EMBT have put a lot of energy into renewing the tool.  Yes - we can discuss if the money has been used on the right parts of the tools, but it is we, the users, that have been asking for stuff like wider platform support, and EMBT don't have the resources to address all issues at the same time.

    As users and potentially ambassadors for the tool, we have to ask:

    Are we creating an open and supportive environment for the users of the tool?

    Are we writing articles, components and sharing code for the tool?

    Are we supporting the efforts of EMBT by purchasing an SA for the tool?

    IMO, lighting candles beats cursing at the dark - but if you have completely lost faith in the tool - please - just move on to something greener on the other side of the fence - instead of preaching doom and gloom to the rest of us.

    My opinion, and mine alone.

    RESHARE:
    Another post on the #boycottapple  topic.

    Reshared text:
    Fuck you, Apple: You've gone too far

    I would like to preface this bit of rambling with a disclaimer: broad strokes, I like Apple. As a company. I also like Microsoft. And Google. These three companies, together, represent some of the finest innovation I've ever witnessed. The three of them, as a whole, are beacons of what progress should be. They all have their missteps and they all have their problems, but they never stop. Each of them is responsible for this amazing future that we live in today.

    But Apple? Your unrelenting assault on anything that you perceive as being derivative of your baby has gone beyond acceptable. You have moved past being the underdog, being the troubled artist, the downtrodden genius. As a company, as an identity, you are now the spoiled rich kid that got told to share. And just like that spoiled brat, you've raised a fuss that is entirely disproportional even to your imagined wrong, much less reality.

    For those who haven't heard, the Galaxy Nexus is a phone that was available for sale in the US that is built by Samsung, but designed in tandem with Google. The purpose of the device is to be a model, a symbol of what Android is and could be, straight from the heart of Google. And it would take all of 5 seconds holding one to tell that it is not an iPhone.

    I say that this device "was" available because at the moment, it isn't anymore. Because of a lawsuit with Apple. A lawsuit over a few patents. I don't care to go over the details. The short version is, Apple found a few tiny things that Android does the same way iPhones do them. Ergo, they are infringing Apple's patents. Ergo, the Galaxy Nexus is an illegal device. Ergo, Google murders babies and should be wiped off the earth.

    This is shit. This is complete and utter horseshit. Google is currently in the process of hurrying out an OTA update to fix the issue so the device is no longer infringing Apple's patents. This means that, among other things, avoiding the infringement is trivially easy to do. If Apple really only wanted Google to not infringe its patents, this could be sorted out easily without banning devices.

    It could also be sorted out with money. Apple has refused to substitute damages in exchange for injunctions because it feels it has that right. This, too, is borne of the feces of farm animals. Apple has no interest in peace here. Apple wants to end Android. Apple wants to prevent as many Android devices from being sold to end consumers as possible, and accomplishing this by being better isn't enough, it seems.

    The argument could (and will) be made, by the way, that if it's trivially easy to avoid infringing a patent, why didn't Google just do this in the first place? It's simple: because making mobile devices requires, necessarily, hundreds of thousands of little features that may or may not infringe on someone's patents somewhere. Whether it be standards-related like Nokia's recent claims, or just a clever idea that someone had and didn't realize someone else's product already does. This further raises the questions of whether such patents should even be legal, but that's beside the point. The point is that what these companies are arguing over is less like intellectual property theft and more like arguing over which one of them exceeded the speed limit by a single mile per hour. It is virtually impossible to drive a vehicle at exactly the speed limit 100% of the time. Leeway is granted to drivers who can't maintain a perfectly OCD adherence to the law. This same sort of leeway is not being granted to the players in the mobile industry. Instead, the law is being used in the way closest to the letter and furthest from the spirit, in a chess game that is more about market share dominance than it is fair competition.

    I want a nice phone. That is all I want. And both Google and Apple (as well as all the OEMs) work incredibly hard to grant my wish. In exchange, of course, for my money. Which I will happily surrender. This is the deal we consumers make with companies: you make a product I like and I will give you money for it. However, wonderfully, at the end of the day, I have a choice: if I don't like a product, I can choose not to spend money on it.

    Apple would have none of that. Apple wants to believe that Android, as a whole, is a rip off in every way of iOS. Despite the litany of differences, despite the veritable cornucopia of essays and comments and blog posts and books, oh the books, written to the contrary. Despite the fact that the most uninformed, mentally slow observer to hold an iPhone and a Galaxy Nexus in their hands could tell that they are very different devices.

    If Apple wanted peace, we would have peace now. The opportunity has been presented, on more than one occasion, to settle these relatively minor disputes with money. Apple does not want money. Apple wants bans. Apple has succeeded in getting bans. This maneuver would almost make sense if Apple were still the underdog. Apple wanting to halt the sales of a big bad company "stealing" its ideas would be reasonable if Apple weren't the richest fucking company in the god damn world. Seriously. No one has as much money as Apple. No one has Apple's power. No one has the reach Apple does.

    When Windows came out, Apple's fear was rational. Comparatively few people knew about Apple, and even fewer could afford their products. If Windows could copy the basic idea of the Mac's GUI wholesale and face zero repercussions, it would not be impossible to imagine Apple being wiped from the face of the earth (and in fact it nearly was). However, that is not the case anymore. Apple does not face extinction or irrelevance if it loses this new patent war. It faces only an equal. A fair fight. A competitor of a caliber to rival its own.

    This is why Apple wants bans. This is why Apple won't settle its disputes. This is why Apple sues manufacturers because you can tap a phone number or because scrolling locks into a certain axis, yet will rip off the idea of a pull-down notification shade wholesale. It's not because Apple lacks the clarity to realize it also borrows features and ideas from other OSes. It's because Apple truly believes, in the minds of its leadership, that Android is a pale shadow of itself and deserves to be removed from the earth by any means necessary. These patents are not the ends, they're the means.

    And it's disgusting. I want to use Android. I love Android. I can't get enough of Android. I respect iPhones and I'd like to see what happens with Windows Phone, but at the end of the day, Android is my platform of choice. And after six versions of iOS, it is ridiculous to believe that I, an informed consumer with high demands of my mobile device, could be satisfied by something that is little more than a rebranded knock-off of an Apple device.

    This is my choice, Apple. I will make it no matter what you do. I could care less if you're bitter about what may or may not have happened in a board room, or if you truly believe your product is better. I want to make my own choice about what device and OS I use and you are doing nothing but getting in the way. You don't get to make this decision for me. You don't get to decide that customers shouldn't have access to Android. This mentality is precisely the sort of reason I don't use iOS devices to begin with. On iOS, if I want to run an application that wasn't directly approved by Apple, I need to jailbreak my device which voids my warranty. If I want to run an application that wasn't directly approved by Google, and even if I ignore that the Play Store is not policed, I can check one setting to enable third-party apps and voila. The internet is my oyster. This is something I treasure. It's also a key difference between Android's approach and iOS's.

    But you would have that option taken away from me, Apple. And that's not okay. I really don't care if you want to hang on to control of your ecosystem. Some people prefer it and I'm all for that. Choice is great. Personal freedom is great. But the day you start telling me what devices I can and can't have, that is the day we start to have a serious problem. If you had just settled for some money, if you had tried to make peace with Google, or any of the OEMs, we would be in a different place. But today I was told that I am not allowed to buy a Galaxy Nexus if I want to because Apple said no.

    So, I say again: Fuck you, Apple.

    Reinventing Delphi for the masses.
    (A spinoff from the post by +Colin Johnsun)
    This might appall some, and appeal to others. Keep an open mind as this is just a brain fart from yours truly.

    EMBT continues to offer the current versions as before, but adds a new offering:  You get the tool free of charge with an attached account in the "Embarcadero App Store" where you can give away or sell your app on various platforms. Or, you pay $xx/year for extended services such as hosted VCS, product forums and issue trackers.

    In fact, you don't even compile locally - but in the cloud, directly to your app store and to the various platforms. This will give EMBT a wealth of info on reproducable internal errors, and the compiler can be upgraded with zero deployment cost.  In theory, a simplfied IDE might even be web hosted, and debugging done on platform emulators in the cloud.

    The app store can have mechanisms for allowing access to test versions for test users and release versions for regular customers. If you sell your app, EMBT get the customary 25-30% of the income.  EMBT may even offer access to cloud DB services for your apps for a price, either paid by you - or by the end-user.

    Surely, I am not the first to think along these lines, +Marco Cantù?

    Samsung 1 - Apple 0

    Imagine that. Samsung got away as cheap as US $1 bln for having Apple testify in court that Samsung's products are so similar to Apple's products, that you as a consumer can't tell the difference, even when the Samsung products are cheaper.  You couldn't buy that kind of advertisement for US $ 1 bln if you tried.

    (This post is in Norwegian. English version: https://plus.google.com/u/0/103128232230617819686/posts/D92EsZPm9ps )

Vet du hvordan man Googler?

    (P.S. - Del gjerne denne posten med andre)

    Patent cases need professional juries, IMO.  These things are far to complex to be judged by laymen.

    Judge in Oracle v. Google Explains What Jurors Must Not Do -- And It's What the Jury in Apple v. Samsung Seem to Have Done

    The judge in Oracle v. Google trial has instructed the prospective jurors that if they have some special knowledge on topics that will be important in the case, such as from a prior patent case, they can't use that in deciding this case but must only go by the evidence presented. This is precisely how the jurors in Apple v. Samsung, failed (remember the jury foreman who had experience in patenting technology Velvin Hogan:  Apple Jury Foreman: Here's How We Reached a Verdict).

    RESHARE:

    Reshared text:
    Just before Christmas, I spotted an Aluminum Bluetooth Keyboard for Nexus 7 that snaps on as a Cover.  At less than US$25, I took a chance and ordered one from +DX+ (SKU: http://goo.gl/Pptmf) and posted about it (http://goo.gl/Lwwnm).

    It arrived yesterday, and here are some first impressions:

    Google Docs Share Experiment

    Yesterday, I shared a Google Document text edit link on Google+, with no other text than the first paragraph you see below to see what would happen. The result was such as I hoped, people jumped right in. At 11:50, 15 minutes after I shared the document, there were 11 people viewing or editing it.

    Without any project leader, without any plan, several people contributed to create fragments of a story. It was really fun to watch the editing - someone would write something, while at the same time another person fixed grammar and spelling, and a third person made subtle changes and additions - all in the same chapter.

    The editor crashed with a message twice, but the recovery was flawless with no changes lost.

    Imagine this for a defined group of people, with a plan, a project, a goal!

    #feedback Dear +Google Docs, +Vic Gundotra and +Natalie Villalobos - You have wonderful collaborative tools here, but we need tighter integration with Google+. It would be great if we could share a document for viewing and or editing - using the visibility and access control defined by Google+! I.e. share to public, extended circles, specific circles, and specific Google+ individuals.

    Here is the resulting document, 24 hours later: https://docs.google.com/document/d/13KdHOD3i1sIzZ3i9JG67GsQJexcOaDaCjvvHTlMnzTU/edit
    Thanks to +Hassan Yate and +WeeSiong Ng who participated with their full names, and to the rest that accessed and edited anonymously.

    Heads up for +Google+ Mockups +Max Huijgen +Thomas Morffew +Peter G McDermott, +Miguel Rodriguez and +Morten Myrstad

    +Reg Saddler shares a lot of gorgeous images, but rarely with often without credit to the origin. This irks me, for some reason. I try hard to name or reference the source of what I post, although I do slip up from time to time.

    What do you think about sharing images without source info? Is it the new way of the Web?

    Happy Apocalypse Long Count Great Year!
    Let's party like it's 13.0.0.0.0 !

    "The Mayan Calendar Date is written with a five-decimal count to show a day’s position within the; baktun (400 tun), katun (20 tun), tun (360 kin), vinal (20-kin month), and the kin. The Great Year has 13 baktun, so we write 13.0.0.0.0 for day one, and, for example, 12.9.6.1.0 for January 1, 2000.

    The Long Count Cycle will end in Dec. 21, 2012 when it will again be 13.0.0.0.0, according to anthropologists who begin our current Count of just more than 5,125 years from in Aug. 31, 3113 B.C."

    Go Public on Google!
    No, I am not talking about an IPO, silly ;)

    Post to Public
    If you share a post to one of your circles, it will remain hidden for everybody that is not in that specific circle at the time of the post.  If someone visits your profile, they will see only your public posts - and those are what will render you interesting in the eyes of a visitor.  If you have  a thousand interesting posts, but all hidden within a circle, your profile might look kinda boring.

    My advise - if you share something that is of general interest - share it to Public rather than to a circle!

    Tag your posts
    I also try to #tag my posts with a relevant set of tags to make it easier to find via searching.

    Consider turning off notifications for circles
    If you insist on sharing to your circles and you have people in the circle that you have circled, but which perhaps don't have you circled back, please turn off notifications to that circle.

    How?  When you add a circle to the post recipient list, you can hover the mouse over the circle name, and a small popup appear with a check box for turning on/off notifications.

    When the check box is ticked - everyone in the circle gets a notification message.  Trust me when I say that this can be a tad annoying when you have a large number of people that have you circled.

    Patently disturbed

    Some of the patents in question in the US Apple vs Samsung should never have been awarded. The jury approving their existence, shows the risk of having a non-tech jury in a tech case.

    As for legal enforcement putting an end to blatant plagiarism - that's ok - but again, if the patents granted are too generic and wide in scope, it can be limiting on the ability to even change and improve on a idea.

    One part of me is vengeful and like to see Google/Motorola Mobility score an equally devastating blow to Apple in the next case. The other part wants to see a settlement to put an end to the madness.

    Regardless of what happens - the patent system needs a change.

    As for the impact on Samsung beyond a short cash flow problem - hard to say, but it hardly should mean more than a bump in the graph. Samsung's new devices are less "inspired" by Apple, which is a good thing.

    What will it mean for Android? Will Google have to go mad on taking out patents for every bit and pixel to stop Apple from copying them? Most likely, but is that good for progress?

    One month before announcing Graph Search, Facebook removed the option to opt out of search results.

    +Zach Seward brings attention to the fact that one month before announcing its Graph Search feature, Facebook quietly change its privacy policy to remove the part about opting out of search results.

    In addition, this new section of the privacy policy was inserted on December 11:

    "When you hide things on your timeline, like posts or connections, it means those things will not appear on your timeline. But, remember, anyone in the audience of those posts or who can see a connection may still see it elsewhere, like on someone else’s timeline or in search results. You can also delete or change the audience of content you post."

    (Facebook deserves some credit for making its privacy policy very clear, and in plain language. So if you use Facebook, it's your own damn fault.)

    My dearest +Solveig Fosdal gave me a Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G for Christmas! It's my first prime, and I can tell that this is going to be a bit of a learning curve, with regards to the use of focus and aperture, and also with regards to figuring out how to use it for close range or on a distance.  It's not very forgiving with regards to shake (no stabilizer), but it is fantastic with regards to light.  This shot is #sooc , handheld in lamp light.

    Feedly is the new Reader!

    It's actually so good that my sorrow over Google Reader's imminent death has turned to optimism for the future of RSS.

    Feedly imported all my Reader sources without a hitch, and it gives me better control over layout per feed group, and better tools for marking stuff as read.  It also makes it easy to share to most, if not all social services.

    So - why RSS, Reader and Feedly?  Why not just use Google News, News Republic, News360, Pulse and the other news concentrators?

    Well - they do algorithmic selections of the most read or most popular content whereas I want to drink straight from the unfiltered fire hose that is my selection of sources.  I want to see those little odd stories I would otherwise miss.

    Feedly runs on Chrome, Safari and FireFox, and have native apps for iOS and Android.

    With Project Normandy, Feedly offers a drop-in replacement for the Google Reader API,  allow the Google Reader add-on tools to easily transition to Normandy after Google Reader is dead and buried. It makes you wonder - will Feedly eventually do a service like Feedburner as well?  It could make sense as it almost seems like Google are looking at merging content into their services by crawling, more than by syndication.

    The King is dead. Long live the King!

    Google Plus Circles is a great way of splitting people into areas of interest or relationship - but - we all have multiple relationships and interests - so how to let people know what circles of interest you have, and how to inform that you would not mind them joining that circle?

    I have a few circles of interest which I would love to fill with people with the same interests. Delphi/Software, Photography, Poetry, and Useless fun stuff.

    Needless to say - if I publish all posts to Public - Delphi people might quickly tire of photos and prose, in the same way poets would nod off to the dreary software nerd speak.

    But - If someone sees my profile - they won't see and know about these circles of interest.

    I was thinking - what if I created a public post with comments - something along this:

    If you want to be added to the following circles, please +1 the circles you would like to join:
    1. +1 to apply for Delphi circle
    2. +1 to apply for Photo circle
    3. +1 to apply for Poetry circle
    4. +1 to apply for Fun&Geeky circle

    The problem is that such a post might slide off the top of my public stream, and I can't sticky it. Also - I would have to watch this post carefully and manually add people to these circles.

    Ideally, this process should be semi-automatic. If I mark a circle as "Publicly visible", people should be able to either join automatically or get queued for approval.

    The new Google+ - When new tools overshadow old lessons

    I'm on a 1920x1200 display, and the amount of information in my stream on a screenful of Google+ is pitifully small, even with three columns.

    Have the designers tossed out all old typographical wisdom?

    The single column view...
    Get rid of it.  In it's current form, it's a joke.  It should have been a visual and design wise alternative - instead of a pinstripe of information in the middle of my display.

    I'm not impressed.

    Edit:
    There are a lot of bugs in the new layout.

    - The bold font has really bad kerning.

    - I get am/pm time instead of 24h clock as before.

    - The - spacer between post comments needs to go.  In fact it is gone, if you look at a single post.

    - The bold names in +mentions.  We had that at the start in the old layout. It had to go. It still has to go.

    - The translate tool links feel like noise now - unaligned and blue - all over the place.

    - I no longer can see which of my most frequently visited Communities that have unread posts without opening the complete community list.

    - The communities overlap on the community list, and flicker as well as swap places.

    - The new G+ popout menu can interfere with the people info popup card, causing it to linger after you f.x. switch to community view.

    - Unfortunately, the CircleCount buttons also frequently break the layout in the three column stream, going outside the post's div.  It's pretty bad - to the point where I am considering dropping the extension.

    - Why can't I edit a post from the All Notifications list?

    - Why is this edit post window a tiny box when the post is quite long, the box has focus, and there is tons of unused space above and below?

    The list goes on.

    I just stumbled on a Chrome feature I haven't noticed before (Chrome 21.0.1171.0 dev-m)

    If you in the url bar type "post " - ie the word post followed by a space, a command like notification appear, and after you type some search term, a Google Search window opens with your terms and additionaly specifiers to narrow down the search to Google+.

    Pretty nifty!

    So - it took 17 minutes to boot - but it ran :)

    Mountain Lion will NOT run on: first version of the Macbook Air, iMacs made in late 2006, all Macbook Pros made prior to July 2007, nearly all of the Macbooks with the plastic body casing and the Xserves machines made in late 2006 and early 2008.

    Shame on you, Apple.

    G+ Etiquette question:  If someone posts a link to a different post (which someone else again had posted) in a comment on your post - and it has no relevance what so ever - what would you do?

    Leave as is?
    Delete the post?
    Delete and block the poster?

    If we were to bring manufacturing back home, would that not mean more jobs and growth for the economy? The operating margins of the corporations might go down, making the 1% less fat - but is that really unthinkable?

    We'd strengthen the availability of skilled labour, increase the number of jobs, retain the research and development, and be in charge of working conditions, worker contracts, and environmental impact, and we would not have to worry as much about mysterious backdoors appearing in security chips, or copies of the products mysteriously appearing elsewhere.

    Or am I missing something crucial?

    Delphi XE3 and deprecated

    Deprecated is great for gradually shifting out code that you want to remove, but it has some syntactical personality issues.

    Example 1
    unit MyUnit;
    interface
    type
      TMyType = class (TSomeType)
        procedure InnocentBystander;
        procedure MyProc;  deprecated 'Use SomeOtherProc instead';
      end;

    Note the semicolon before deprecated.
    A call to MyProc will give a warning

    [dcc32 Warning] Main.pas(xxx): W1000 Symbol 'MyProc' is deprecated: 'Use SomeOtherProc instead'

    Example 2
    unit MyUnit;
    interface
    type
      TMyType = class (TSomeType)
        procedure InnocentBystander;
        procedure MyProc;
      end deprecated 'Use TMyOtherType instead';

    Note the awkward location, and no semicolon.
    A reference to TMyType will give a warning

    [dcc32 Warning] Main.pas(xxx): W1000 Symbol 'TTMyType' is deprecated: 'Use TMyOtherType instead'

    Example 3
    Combining 1 and 2 almost works!
    unit MyUnit;
    interface
    type
      TMyType = class (TSomeType)
        procedure InnocentBystander;
        procedure MyProc; deprecated 'Use SomeOtherProc instead';
      end deprecated 'Use TMyOtherType instead';

    It's almost like the compiler can't make up it's mind about which deprecated to use, and in the end refuse the code

    [dcc32 Error] MyUnit.pas(xxx): E1030 Invalid compiler directive: 'DEPRECATED'
    [dcc32 Warning] Main.pas(xxx): W1000 Symbol 'TMyType is deprecated: 'Use TMyOtherType instead'
    [dcc32 Warning] Main.pas(xxx): W1000 Symbol 'InnocentBystander' is deprecated
    [dcc32 Warning] Main.pas(xxx): W1000 Symbol 'MyProc' is deprecated

    Example 4
    unit MyUnit deprecated 'Text explaining why';
    interface
    type
      TMyType = class (TSomeType)
        procedure InnocentBystander;
        procedure MyProc; deprecated 'Use SomeOtherProc instead';
      end deprecated 'Use TMyOtherType instead';

    No semicolon, and any reference to the unit will say

    [dcc32 Warning] main.pas(xxx): W1006 Unit 'MyUnit' is deprecated
    but it doesn't emit the 'Text explaining why'.

    Try to find the documentation for this!

    I am positively drooling over the Pro.  It is a perfect match to how I've described my "dream tablet".  It is not really just a tablet, it is a tablet shaped PC.

    How about that battery?  If we compare it to the Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook, that claims up to 8 hours, 53 minutes battery life on 47WHr battery.
    I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I guess I really want G+ to be about interesting stuff, and not a social emo-support network - like Facebook. Am I callous and should I embrace the wallowing in self-victimizing - or is ok to be Prot from K-PAX?

    Bryan Adams threatens to stop making records.
    I'm not sure anyone would listen says Adams.

    Finishing words from the article (interview by Swedish Nöjesbladet ):

    Bryan Adams had his greatest successes during a time when CD and LP discs was still played warm in homes and cottages. He misses the time when people actually listened to - and paid for - the whole album.

    - It was much cooler before. But there's no turning back now, it will not be the same. People expect the music to be free, says Bryan Adams.

    "People should pay"
    The rock hero hasn't much sympathy for "free" file sharing .

    - I think people should get paid for their music. I do not believe that music should be free. If you go into a store and take a candy bar, they would chase after you. What's the difference?

    --

    I wonder.  What would happen if musicians stopped recording music?
