Project 52 B&W
Week 20: Framed
#P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

Sorry I'm a day late.... I was unplugged for a bit, I need some stress reduction!!
I was helping my cousin add on to his shed so he can bring in some new equipment for his business. It was such a beautiful couple of days but I think I got a little bit of a sunburn.... just enough that I can feel it but not enough that it hurts.
I wish I could spend more time out here instead of in the office.

    Week 19: Food
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

I'm not much for food photography so I just grabbed a few things from the fridge... there wasn't a lot there to work with but I did find some good colors to use. An orange pepper, red/yellow apple, red/green strawberry and a green(ish) celery stalk. I took them out to our table on the deck and almost put a white posterboard under them, but I liked the pattern of the expanded metal and black color against the smooth lines and color of the food.
While I was working in LR I went to do a lens correction and thought I'd do something different and pick a lens I don't have.... I went with a 15mm f2.8 and it twisted the view to this! I'll go with this view over the boring shot I had.....  :o)

    Week 18: Speed
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

This was kind of an "Oops" shot from prom pictures last weekend. The guys wanted to do a jump shot and I wasn't ready for the shot the first time. This isn't so much about speed other than the "lack of" from me not being ready, but they are moving....   :o)
I liked the way the sky blew out so I just made it into a high key shot. The tree behind almost gives it a look of movement too by the shape and direction of the branches.
We ended up getting home about 6:30 the next morning after working the "after prom" party at school. Loooong day but lots of fun!

    Week 17: Night Lights
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

I was going to shoot this cute little night light we have in the spare bathroom, but after playing with this one I kind of like the lines on it. This is the curtain and the light bleeding through underneath on the stage during the change over at my middle daughter's last school band concert this week. The color version has some neat colors so I thought I'd try it in B&W. It was lights out except for this light so I had to bump the ISO a bit to hand hold this.

    Week 16: Fade
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

Tisha, I did the Google search for "fade" and only found goofy haircuts.... maybe that was the point? :o)
Well.... on our 15th anniversary we went to Wisconsin Dells for the weekend.
(Notice the date at the bottom)
We found a little photo booth at the put-put golf range and hopped in.
12 1/2 years later, this is what the photo looks like... the one on the left is what is left of the faded original, the right is what I could tweak it to without getting too crazy.
I hate heat sensitive printing but can't believe it has held on this long! I think I had better get a good shot of this and bring it back, and print it before it gets any worse!

    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw, +Susan Porter, & +Lauri Novak

Well, this is the best I could do this week.... our weather sucks and can't make up it's mind what it's going to do, so the flowers are holding off showing their faces.
I was going to have this in before the day was over but I fell asleep with my hand still on the mouse.... LOL
I am so glad the weekend is finally here!
This is our Easter Lily that is still hanging in there... it had a nice backlight in the window so I went with it....
    Have a great weekend everyone!

    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw , +David Bowden , & +Susan Porter

This is the tank I've been driving all winter. My work beater is making a lot of noise and I haven't been able to work on it yet.... so I've been using that excuse to drive this for the last 5 months  :o)
Now that the weather is warming up, I won't be able to use that excuse much longer.....
I love driving the truck, but it usually doesn't get many miles put on it, we usually just use it during camping season and when the snow gets deep.
The grunge treatment just seemed the right thing to do on this shot. This was processed in Lightroom other than a little spot cleanup in PS.

    Week 13: Look Up
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw , +David Bowden , & +Susan Porter

We had some great clouds flying by over the moon tonight, on my way home from work. By the time I got home and got out the camera, it looked like everything had blown over. So, I played around trying to get a decent moon shot and the clouds decided to come back... :o)
I had to get this one fast, the clouds were moving pretty quickly. I shot two exposures and blended the moon back in so it wasn't so blown out.
I shot at a pretty high ISO to keep things sharp otherwise I'd have lost the textures.

    RESHARE:
Awesome quotes +John Paul Caponigro !!
I'd rather play than work.   ;o)

    Reshared text:
    28 Quotes On Play

Here's a collection of my favorite quotes on play.

“Life is the game that must be played.” – Edwin Arlington Robinson

“Look closely and find subtle ways to play in your work. Play breaks up the burden of labor and gives it ananda – deep meaningful joy.” – Thomas Moore

“A person might be able to play without being creative, but he sure can’t be creative without playing.” — Kurt Hanks and Jay Parry

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.” – Plato

“It is in playing, and perhaps only in playing, that the child is free to be creative.” – D W Winnicott

“We all operate in two contrasting modes, which might be called open and closed. The open mode is more relaxed, more receptive, more exploratory, more democratic, more playful and more humorous. The closed mode is the tighter, more rigid, more hierarchical, more tunnel-visioned. Most people, unfortunately spend most of their time in the closed mode. Not that the closed mode cannot be helpful. If you are leaping a ravine, the moment of takeoff is a bad time for considering alternative strategies. When you charge the enemy machine-gun post, don’t waste energy trying to see the funny side of it. Do it in the “closed” mode. But the moment the action is over, try to return to the “open” mode—to open your mind again to all the feedback from our action that enables us to tell whether the action has been successful, or whether further action is need to improve on what we have done. In other words, we must return to the open mode, because in that mode we are the most aware, most receptive, most creative, and therefore at our most intelligent.” — John Cleese

“Creative people are curious, flexible, persistent, and independent with a tremendous spirit of adventure and a love of play.” – Henri Matisse

“Necessity may be the mother of invention, but play is certainly the father.” – Roger von Oech

“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.” – O Fred Donaldson

“It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.” – Leo F. Buscaglia

“The more I want to get something done, the less I call it work.” – Richard Bach

“Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” – Kay Redfield Jamison

“Play is training for the unexpected.” – Marc Bekoff

“Whoever wants to understand much must play much.” – Gottfried Benn

“Deep meaning lies often in childish play.” – Johann Friedrich von Schiller

“A child who does not play is not a child, but the man who does not play has lost forever the child who lived in him.” – Pablo Neruda

“When we come together to play and be we are truly ourselves When we are truly ourselves it is wonderful and when we act collectively in that wonder we do transformative work for our community and our world.” – Brad Colby

“Too much of our work amounts to the drudgery of arranging means toward ends, mechanically placing the right foot in front of the left and the left in front of the right, moving down narrow corridors toward narrow goals. Play widens the halls. Work will always be with us, and many works are worthy. But the worthiest works of all often reflect an artful creativity that looks more like play than work.” — James Ogilvy

“Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.” – Abraham Maslow

“Sometimes you have to play a long time to be able to play like yourself.” – Miles Davis

“Don’t play the saxophone. Let it play you.” – Charlie Parker

“To the art of working well a civilized race would add the art of playing well.” – George Santayana

“If you must play, decide on three things at the start: the rules of the game, the stakes, and the quitting time” – Chinese Proverbs

“There is work that is work and there is play that is play; there is play that is work and work that is play. And in only one of these lies happiness.” – Gelett Burgess

“Work and play are words used to describe the same thing under differing conditions.” – Mark Twain

“A child loves his play, not because it’s easy, but because it’s hard.” – Benjamin Spock

“Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at play.” – Heraclitus

“Life must be lived as play.” – Plato

Please excuse the mess.... I have a kid home from college on spring break LOL!!
Yes, that is my tripod with a leg against the sliding glass door!
+Lambert Schlumpf wondered how I got the caster to stand.... answer is, white thread!
It's funny the things you can come up with when you don't have a full time studio or softboxes to shoot with, and you need to get a shot. I tend to "wing it" and just go with the flow..... unless I'm taking a trip and getting some good "landscape" time in.

    Week 10: Reflecting
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw , +David Bowden , & +Susan Porter

I had a hard time this week because my reflecting is usually water or shiny stuff. The way our weather has been and the snow on the ground keeps me from doing that. I was doing some cleaning and ran across some prototype parts that I used to make for different people when I found this gem. So... reflecting would be the many years I spent working with this product and how much fun I had.
    Here's the story....
I was working in a small shop in the middle of nowhere about 16 years ago???
A guy showed up one day in shorts and sandals saying he had this great idea and couldn't find anyone in California, where he had been living, to make prototypes for this. He handed us a napkin with a rough drawing on it. After talking for awhile we figured out he was pretty serious and if this worked, it would help a lot of disabled people. So I took the task of making cad drawings and helping to engineer these "wheelchair suspension" forks. I built him a couple pair of forks to do his testing and turned him loose... He did everything he could think of to try to destroy these things and couldn't, so we knew he had a future with these. One of the tests I remember was pushing someone through an obstacle course of 2x4's, rocks, grass and a curb or two... Now, on a normal wheelchair, a person would be on their face and hurting... badly.... to our surprise and some expectations, the forks ran over the objects and kept going without pitching a person out of the chair!! For a few years after testing ,the company I worked for produced the production runs and design changes and additions for this product, until we couldn't keep up. Now days, he has a manufacturing shop of his own and sells these to about every chair manufacturer in the world, and for "power chairs" too...... all this from an idea of how to help a few friends and a napkin drawing..... Just goes to show what you can do if you believe in something and don't ever give up!

Check out this video of the Frog Legs in action... especially the part after 2:15 !!!!!  Frog legs basic

I'll post a photo of how I did this shot...... no studio, just a table and some off the wall ideas and things laying around the house LOL!

    The paparazzi shot....
I converted this in Lightroom then went to onOne's Perfect Photo Suite 7 and looked through the B&W module for a neat preset. Just so happens this one is called "paprazzi" ! I applied that  and brought it back to LR to grunge it just a bit.
This wasn't supposed to be an Eye of Providence or illuminati symbol or anything, my eye just lined up that way when I was blocking the shot. LOL

This is our baby "Bella". She was a stray runt left on our deck about 3 years ago in December when the temps were about 15 below and -50 wind chills. She was so cute (and cold) we couldn't leave her out there. Fast forward to this year... her siblings from down the road (and a litter or 10 later) are now adopting us and staying on our deck!! I don't think we will be bringing all three of them in this time... although one is long haired and verrrrry pretty!

I think we have been adopted... This is one of the kitties that has decided we have better food and scratching than down the road where she came from. She has a couple brothers and a small kitten that show up once in awhile, they all look like our Bella so I'm guessing they are all siblings to one momma over the last couple of years. One we named "Moe" because of the wide white stripe from his nose to the back of his head like a mohawk!.

    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw , +Gene Bowker , +David Bowden

Thought I'd play with the word "thirds" a bit.... I grabbed the 1/3 cup and started to look for a backdrop, I found a black blanket to set it apart from the background..... I was thinking minimalism here. When I went looking for something to hold the blanket up with, I noticed a foot stool (box) that had the top sewn with the tic-tac-toe "thirds" pattern on it, so I decided to use it instead of the blanket. We had some nice soft light from the overcast sky outside, so I set it up on my daughter's bed to catch a nice side light to give all a little shadow for some mid tones. No flash, just available light.

    Pink Rainbow

I found these in my oldest daughter's room. She's away at college right now so I can touch them without her having a fit!   :o)
She works at Victoria's Secret and loves collecting the dogs (and other things....). The blanket these are on is pretty psychedelic too so the dogs fit right in. I called this the "rainbow" because these are the R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. colored ones she has.... there are way more than just these in her room!!! (where do they get the money for this stuff??)

    RESHARE:

    Reshared text:
My friends think I'm a freak, but it's only because I care.
I'm writing this for my friends who are on Facebook. I'm writing it here so I can share the link on FB, because that's the only way I post there anymore. And before you pass this off as "just another anti-FB rant" take a few minutes to actually read it.

I used to be an avid FB user. I run our office from home, and I don't have any other office staff here. So for large portions of the day, I'm alone. It's was nice to take a break every now and then and pop onto FB to see what my friends were up to.

Then, I was introduced to G+, and after the initial break-in period of figuring out that this was not the same thing as FB in a different format, but was something totally different, I really started to enjoy connecting with people based on interests. But I still used FB to keep up with my friends, most of whom had no interest in using G+.

Then FB started changing. Changing privacy settings and TOS behind the scenes, and laughing it off with an "Oh, my bad!" when they got called on it. And now we have FB Exchange and FB Graph. If you don't think these are anything for you to be concerned about, let me share with you what happened to one of my friends today. See the photo below? That is a screen shot of a public post, made by FB on behalf of my friend (I blocked out her name & avatar.), without her knowledge or consent. (Other than by using FB, you agree to their TOS, so you have given consent).  It's out there, in Graph search, from now to eternity. My friend knew nothing about it, and she can't even see this post from her page. And she never even "Liked" these links, even though FB says she did!

I'm not a techy person, so rather than me rambling on about it, I'll refer you to this video by +J.C. Kendall for an explanation of FB Exchange. Go to 4:18.  http://goo.gl/fcEM7

The only "solution" that I know of, other than trying to delete your FB account, is this:

    >>> First, log out of FB if you are not already logged out, and be sure you log out from every device you may be logged in from, like your phone or tablet.

    >>> Second, clean your system and clear cookies to get rid of the FB super cookie. If you don't know how to do this, have a friend show you, because you need to know this if you're going to use the Internet.

    >>> After that, never log onto FB again directly from your usual browser window. Open an incognito window, and log in from there, don't visit any other web sites, or open any other windows or tabs while you are logged on, log off as soon as you are finished, and close the browser. If you don't know how to do that, instructions are here:  http://goo.gl/t9aUD

    >>> Clear cookies regularly.

    >>> Don't "Like" anything that you are not comfortable being made public. You can have all your FB privacy settings locked down as tight as they will go, but if you "Like" a page or link, that's going to be Public, and the people you are connected to are going to see a post about it like the one below.

    RESHARE:
A great list of people to follow here!!
Make sure you check out the other lists too that are at the end of the post!!

    Reshared text:
    First Name T-Z

    The #photographerstofollow  2013 #alphabetcircles

    Curated by +Gene Bowker

So who are these folks? And why are they photographers to follow?

First of all.. this circle contains a bunch of my closest friends on G+. The folks that I spend the most time "with" on here.  There are a bunch of great photographers and just as importantly "good people" here.

How I decide who to circle and share:

    1) Active : They have posted within the last month. With the holidays a lot of folks have slowed down but these folks are still there. Yes, I visited each stream.

    2) Original : These photographers are sharing mostly  "THEIR OWN WORK" and their stream is mostly photography.

    3) Interactive : I try to find folks who are interactive and comment on their own posts and the posts of others.

    4) Honestly, 99% of them circle me too. I usually figure if someone doesn't circle back, they are no longer interested in my work and I make room for someone else in my circling

There are some names you will recognize in here for sure, but there are also some folks you probably don't know yet. Hopefully you will take some time to check them out and see if they have room in your circles.

Any omissions are wholy on me too as no one asked for did anything to be included in here.

I hope you'll reshare in your stream!

    Why?

I love it when people take the time to reshare these circles.

It allows my friends to be introduced to your friends.. and promotes some great photography on G+.

    Not in here

There is no need to ask for inclusion.  I add folks as I come across them,  you can read more about how I select at

    https://plus.google.com/111112809838472063992/posts/NeJZXLJ6oQB

Be Original. Be Active. Be Interactive.

There is a good chance we'll cross paths before I share the circles again.

    Note

This is the last circle for round one in 2013. As my new job starts next week, I'll be spending less time around Google+ until I get moved to ATL and settled in with the new position.

Since I still owe you guys a selfy, I'll throw this one in.
I took this while working on my shot for week 4 "Camera" and didn't even realize it until I started going back through some shots tonight. I had just come home from getting a root canal so I wasn't really all there at the time  ;o)

    Thirds

My "Big Gun" (EF70-200 f2.8 L IS II) wouldn't fit if I wanted this shot to work, the mirrors weren't big enough.
This is my Canon 5D MKII, EF24-105 f4. L IS USM etc.... , and 580EXII.
I do a lot of "CAD" solid modeling and drafting at work, so this popped into my head while I was getting ready for work this week. I processed this in LR4 and played with some of the sliders I normally don't use, like "Grain" to get the effect.

    Week 3: Frozen
    #P52BW13 | +Project 52 B&W
    Curated by +Tisha Craw , +Gene Bowker , +David Bowden

For me, this is a moment frozen in time.
After the mentally, physically and emotionally draining week I had before, this view is what finally set me free for a short time while everyone else was sleeping.
This is a view of downtown Chicago from the top floor of the hotel we stayed at.
I spent quite awhile watching the trains and traffic moving around and just enjoying the lights.
I had to do this "hand held" because, like a dummy, I thought "why would I need a tripod this weekend if I'm shooting a dance competition???" Never crossed my mind that I would be on the top floor looking out over the city at night..... DUH!

Had to put our baby to sleep last Friday... the vet said his liver was shut down and he hadn't really eaten much since just after Christmas. We were to the point of feeding him with a medicine syringe hoping his meds would help but they weren't doing any good. He was still getting around good and was happy, he just didn't have the energy or stamina to do much. He was still the mellow, easy going sweetie until the end, holding my finger with his big paws. We had a great year and a couple weeks with him, so sad he had to go so young. This photo was Christmas morning, I think he was saying "it's time to feed me!"

We got him pretty young and he was still a bit wild so he would hide a lot. I'd mew at him like a kitten and he would come out and talk to me and purr.
I met the family at the vet Friday morning and walked in with my shades on, he just looked at me. As soon as I took them off his eyes lit up and he started talking to me and purring... it was pretty hard to keep it together after that. I held one of his big paws and started to pet it and he grabbed my finger and squeezed it and nuzzled me. He had such a great personality.

We will miss you Little Guy!!! R.I.P.

This is how it usually goes when trying to get a family photo or just the kids.....
One person stares at the camera, the others keep moving or looking around or making noises and laughing. Sometimes I wonder why we even try, then you look at all the photos and there is a good one where no one was expecting you to hit the shutter... and you get a good shot. Even if you never get that perfect posed "cheese" photo that the wifey wants, you always get the true character showing through. You just have to relax and realize, those goofy photos will always mean more and make you smile after the kids are grown and gone.
    :o)

We continued on to the town of Central City. I hadn't been there since I was a little kid! They used to film old westerns there, now it's another casino town..... At least the old cemeteries were still there, I love the old "western" cemeteries.... just like being in an old movie.
The day was very chilly and breezy so the sky was just what I wanted for this shot!
I processed this in +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and applied a few tweaks in +onOne Software Perfect Effects, and PS to remove a sign that just didn't fit the mood :o)
The view from inside the cemetery looking out is pretty nice too!

There was a photo walk around town one weekend sponsored by a guy I'd never met... I figured what a great way to meet more people in the area, so I went. Ends up we were the only two to show up! Oh well... we had a great time and did our own thing.
We ended up on a trail that runs by the river and found some bridges to get under  :o)
I loved the lines on this one and the black and white processing made it that much better!

I shared this last week while I was in Colorado, but with today being "Mountain Monday"..... I thought I'd share it again for that theme.
That, and I haven't had a chance to go through what I shot while I was out there yet.
    :o)
The mountain in the back is Pikes Peak and the red rock formation is in the "Garden of the Gods" and is known as "Kissing Camels".
The camels are not the whole rock, they are actually a small part on the left top part where you see a hole through the rock. Zoom in... you will see them  :o)

THIS is what I love about being a landscape photographer!
You can either get caught up in capturing an epic scene layed out in front of you, or you can look up to the clouds or around in a smaller window of view and use your imagination to capture something entirely different that not everyone will see, until they forget about that epic scene, and just relax and not try so hard to see things!!
Either way, you come away with a great photo!!

    What do you "see"  ???
What I "see" in this great shot from +Deepak Ghosh besides the epic scene..... is a baby dragon flying across the sky and a cat in the corner with bushy eyebrows and moustache...

A couple of friends from our photo club (bird photogs) set up an event over the weekend called "duck, duck, Goose!"..... I think we should have changed it to "Gulls" since they were more plentiful and active than the few geese that were there....
I learned a few things, thanks to them!! We all had a great time and hopefully came away with some great shots. Here's one from the album I started.

I forgot about this one.... not sure how? It comes to my mailbox 2-3 times a year!!  I sent this in to our insurance company for their quarterly photo contest. It's open to employees and insurance customers. This was picked for the "Autumn around the farm" a couple years back, and they still use it in their flyers!
I can say this is my first actual published photo. Most of what I have done previously has gone to charity auctions.

I don't mind the kind of weather in this photo.... decent temps and still great colors to find everywhere.

Incase those of you on the day crew missed it, I shared a new album late last night from a photowalk we had over the weekend.
I really like this one, even more so with the B&W HDR treatment, so I'll share it on it's own...
I used Photomatix on this and liked it as-is without any other adjusting other than a crop.

Time to share some shots from over the weekend....

A photographer in town (whom I hadn't met yet) had a photo walk scheduled for a couple weeks ago but it got rescheduled a couple times... good thing, because I couldn't make it to any of them. When it got rescheduled again to last weekend, I was free and got to go. Looked like everyone else was busy because myself and the guy leading it were the only ones there! The weather finally cooperated too so we had a perfect 3hrs to check out the area.

    RESHARE:
The full list A-Z is at the bottom of the post.
Great list of people +Gene Bowker !!

    Reshared text:
    Are you a "T" "U" "V" "W" "X" "Y" "Z" Photographer?

The final installment of #Alphabetcircle  Series of Active Photographers by +Gene Bowker  #streamcircle

I realized that some of these circles would of been pretty small, so I'm combining them to come up with a circle 139 strong to finish out the sharing.

From +Thomas Hawk +Trey Ratcliff to +Tamara Pruessner +Tisha Craw and +Trisha Standard this final cirlce is full of some of my favorite photographers and some of the "community builders" of the G+ world.

There are some names you might know, but I'm sure there are a lot of hidden gems too that you haven't met yet but who also rock the G+ world.

I hope you will take the time to check out 139 of my friends and see if they should have a home in your circles too.

    About the #alphabetcircles

I am sharing active photogs, no matter what their photography type or number of followers.. so there are all types in here... no one genre or photographic style dominates.

Yes, I visited EACH of the streams myself to validate this.

The folks in this circle have all been active in the last month , share their own work, and their FIRST name start with "T" to "Z"

There are a few who don't follow me (yet I hope) but whose work I really enjoy.

I hope everyone will find someone new in here to follow, there is a LOT of great talent here.

    Why Re-Sharing the circle matters?

There are so many good photographers on G+ that it is impossible to find them all.  Shares help make those introductions. It is how we introduce our friends to our friends friends =)

    "T"hanks Gene

Note +Vince Ong somehow got dropped from the circle and should be in there. Thanks Vince for the mention of the #alphabetcircles  on your webcast!

Great Photographers With < 25,000 Followers
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The photographers here are all in my personal circles.  The choices are mine and mine alone.  No one asked, begged, or pleaded to belong.  No bribes were offered or accepted.  These are the people that I follow because I appreciate their great quality photography and their interaction.  Most I have met as I help curate several of the photography themes.  *There are NO requirements to share this circle*.  I would appreciate the people in this circle plus the post, leave a comment, and share the circle as public.

Each profile has been verified by me.  Each has < 25,000 followers (when they were put into the circle), and most have between 10,000 and 25,000 followers.  They each have high quality original photography content.  You won’t find many animated gifs!

Landscape Photography:  I invite everyone to check out the +Landscape Photography  #LandscapePhotography  theme.  If you want to impress me, that’s the place to do it!!  Post a great landscape that will get my attention.  See the About tab for all the details.

I wasn’t included, what do I do?  If you meet the criteria, weren’t included, but think you should be, then leave me a comment.  Maybe I don’t know about you.  There are millions of people on G+ and I don’t know everyone.  However, I’ll be happy to have a look at your work if you will call it to my attention.  Start posting landscapes that get my attention (see above)!!

There’s a really great photographer XXX that you didn’t include.  Please feel free to recommend qualified people.  I discover new people every day and would be happy to look at their work.  Please make sure that the recommended person meets the criteria.  If they don’t then that tells me a lot about you!

To 'qualify' please share my album below and place a comment and I will select a winner every few shares

This is a quick overview: I first sketched the landscape scene that I wanted to create on paper. From this sketch I created concept art to help me with the element selection. Then I started to look around for the elements to use. Whenever I found something I felt was a potential fit I would photograph it or search for a photo in my (constantly expanding) photography library. Sometimes it would take weeks before I managed to collect all the required elements. Once I had all the elements together it could take another 160+ hours to put it all together.

Here's a tip for those of us that use pocket sized compact cameras (either full time or as a back up) and cell phones..... does that cover everybody???  Maybe you already know this, maybe not?

Go out and get yourself a quality set of polarized sunglasses!!
My shades of choice for the last 16+ years are +Oakley 's!!! I've been wearing them since the original "blades" came out...
Anywho.....  besides seeing things in a whole new light (pun intended) they come in very handy for photography in a pinch.
Now, this was shot through my Canon EF70-200 f2.8L II, but that was just so you could see a "with" and "without" in one view... you will get the same results on a small camera! You can also rotate them to direct the polarization to the scene.
They also come in handy on sunny days when you like getting into the water for a shot and want to know where rocks and debris are so you can get a better footing!
Get a pair and try it for yourself!!

I'm up late again working on some Sr. pics that I need to get finished.... This one was in the mix and it really caught my eye, it feels like it has a story to it. The color version is pretty nice but I felt it needed a little something different and I really like the way the few tweaks I did put more mood to it. Normally I like doing the landscape thing, but my daughter's friend here was great to work with and didn't need much direction from me..... I'm not much for posing people, so she made it really easy to get some great shots!

I hope you all like it too!!

I added another photo to my Zenfolio site from our trip to the U.P. in Michigan.
We were on our way to another waterfall when we passed this on the side of the road. The brakes went on hard and I turned around to get a few shots of this bridge. I love the old wooden train trestles, you don't see them much anymore where I'm at.

Now that I'm finally getting to my Michigan shots from our trip around Lake Michigan and the "UP".... here is the photo I was saving for #waterfallwednesday that I mentioned on yesterday's post....
This is Wagner Falls, just outside of Munising in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Just a short walk off the road and a nice viewing deck.
This was worth walking through a little mud and standing in the cool water to get a great shot. I got some funny looks but maybe not if they had seen it from the view I got!
This was 3 shots processed in Lightroom using the LRenfuse add-on that I FINALLY decided to try... I'm glad  did!! Make sure you donate if you use it, it is worth giving some bucks for the full usage!

You can also see it on my Zenfolio site here !

I'm finally getting around to some photos from the trip we took around Lake Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, back in August.
This is Tahquamenon Falls in the UP. It's about 200 foot across with a 50 foot drop. I was going to save this for #waterfallwednesday but I have something better I'll share tomorrow....  :o)

I did a couple of High School Sr. shoots a couple weeks ago. While we were between locations we walked by this view and I just had to stop!
This is a single exposure run through LR to start, then I tried playing in PS to get a little more familiar with layers and masking, then back to LR to finish.
There is a HUGE difference between seeing this on a calibrated monitor and one that isn't! Sometimes it's nice seeing it both ways so you know what everyone else is seeing.... and how close to what you intended gets seen.
This can also be seen at my "Zen" site here   http://timmcadamphotography.zenfolio.com/p391426608/h409fc48c#h409fc48c

    The Hidden G+ Photo Stats - How-To

Your photos are getting way more views than you think!  Tell me if you are surprised when you look at your own stats...  of course, the total number of photo views does not really matter, but I think you'll be surprised how many more views they get than +1's.

    1)  Go to https://picasaweb.google.com/home
    2)  Click on the Photos from Posts (or an album if you post in a particular album)
    3)  Click on the photo.
    4)  Click on the photo AGAIN.  Look under the photo for the number of views.

The photo below is from http://goo.gl/photos/XLUbiFwp4d .

I tried this with one of +Tom Anderson's photos to show how many people were actually seeing his photos.  In the link that follows, he has about 2300 +1's but OVER 1.3 Million Views - http://goo.gl/QgLwE

Are you also seeing the "multiplier" between +1's and Actual Photo Views?

EDIT:  Many people are saying they are surprised they get more views here than Flickr...  and   +Stephan Bollinger said he below he has a photo at 7.9 million views of his photo at --

If you haven't seen +John De Bord's sunflower photos yet, you need to get over there and check them out!!
But, as much as I love seeing them, I still feel the need to rub his nose in the awesome sunflower fields we have here!
So view it and weep Johnny!!!

.... Yeah, I'm full of BS here.... this is from one of the gardens that have taken over the empty lots around where I work. The city has cleared most of the lots from the flood we had back in '08.
There is one row of about a dozen sunflowers in the garden next to us, and the only ones I've seen.....

Displaying Print Size on your Screen in Photoshop

Do want to get a preview of what your image will look like in print size? You’ve got to fix your Photoshop!

Start a new document by going to File >New.

Set Width = 10cm (or, say, 10 inches… you pick) and Height, whatever (I usually just stay with the 10).

Go to View > Print Size.

This zooms to your document to what Photoshop THINKS your Print Size is.  More often than not, it’s wrong,

To check, get out a ruler, and measure the width of your document on your monitor. For example, let’s say you measured 7.5cm.

Divide your document’s width by the measured width… for example, 10/7.5 = 1.33.

To correct your Photoshop settings, go to Edit > Preferences > Units & Rulers and you should see an area named New Document Preset Resolutions.

Under that, the second field is named Screen Resolution which most probably has a value of 72. Multiply this value by the result above, for example, 72 * 1.33 = 95.76. Round that off to the nearest integer. In this case, we get 96.

Delete the 72 and type in 96.

    … and you’re done!

Fom now on, your print size should be correct — yay!

The AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHER's VIP Circle –– Announcement Post

    #CircleSharingForThePeopleAPCVIP

As you all know I emptied all shared circles in order to bring some more freshness and interestingness into them again. Unfortunately I deleted the AP VIP Circle as well in the process (unintentionally of course). So I will start collecting you people into the VIP circle again.

READ the WHOLE post BEFORE you ask for inclusion.

    What is the VIP circle?
It is a circle for people that are following me AND my +Photoshop Tutorials page and that wants to learn more about digital photography, editing in Photoshop, lighting set-ups, tips, tricks, tweaks and hacks and so on. On the above mentioned page I will put up posts that are only visible to people in the VIP circle, related to the equally above mentioned topics. In other words, it's a great way to improve your photographic skills and learn more from me and other members of the group.

I will share this circle with everybody on Monday, August 13.

    Who can join?
Everybody. You don't need to be particularly good or bad –– as long as you have a profound interest for photography.

    What must you do?

As with all my circles, there are no free rides. Here are the rules (steps you must take) to get accepted:

    1) –– Add me AND the +Photoshop Tutorials page to your circles.

    2) –– Plus AND reshare this post. Why? It's very simple: if you want to get all the goodies and get promoted in the original APC, you must be prepared to promote your fellow photographer as well. Do NOT remove this reshared post from your feed immediately after I have added you to the circle. Doing so will get you banned from all my future circle shares.

    3) –– Make sure that you do NOT post a lot of YouTube clips, animated GIF's, blog post teasers etc. in your feed. I don't mind a few reshares of other people's work but you must mainly share your own original work on your page. I want ths VIP circle to be as clean as possible and focus on photography –– not other bling-bling.

    4) –– Ask for inclusion in the comments and please state which kind of photography you are into and that you HAVE completed all steps. I will check every feed.

Have something to say about my circles? Wanna know what others gained from being in the circles? Then go here: https://plus.google.com/116219534929662479848/posts/7Evg2rSE2Hv

NOTE! If you see that I have plussed your comment, then you know that I have added you to the circle. I didn't PLUS your comment? Make sure that you have reshared this announcement post and let me know that you did so.

*This announcement post is hash-tagged with #CircleSharingForThePeopleAPCVIP so that you may mute the reshares this post will generate. That way you will avoid seeing multiple copies of this post in your feed and your adrenaline level will stay normal. I will add a new hash-tag for every announcement and circle post in the future. That way you won't miss out on any of the action but still can mute all the duplicate reshares.*

Here is an excellent add-on that will help you to mute the reshares: http://code.google.com/p/nonplus/

    Cheers!

I'm just getting started with Zenfolio and added this photo last night.

We were out scouting for locations for my daughters Sr. photos that I'll be taking once our heat wave ends.... We started back for the van when I saw this great light hiding in the tree on the side of the path. This was a single exposure, but I did grab a couple multi exposures from different angles to try out some HDR later.

We did a little late night ghost hunting in a couple places over the Memorial day weekend.... actually we were just checking the flowers we set at a few sites.
There was just enough light left so we started looking at some of the old stones around the cemetery and I found these... the light made them look a little eerie so I went with it... I really liked these two shots...

FREE Photography eBook - Do you want a copy? It's really simple to get your hands on my brand new 2nd Edition - Essential Photography Skills eBook. Just follow these steps:
    1. Share this post with your friends.
    2. Grab your copy here: http://bit.ly/NUJGNP
    3. Comment on this post after you have read the book, let everyone know what you think of it.

Hope you enjoy this book. Much work has gone into upgrading it, with many more pages, diagrams and photos.

    Why?
Because of all the valuable feedback I have received from google+, I have re-written this book in easy-to-understand English, and now I think it explains photography much better than anything I have ever read.
I would also like some honest feedback that I can use for when this book goes on sale (soon), and I want to be the person you think of when you want photography training.
Please comment on the blog, or send me an email (with your picture) that I can use as testimonials.

    Have a great day.

    #550MostFollowedPhotographers

    corrections, please add:
    +Sangeeth VS

Have you ever wondered who are the 550 most followed photographers on G+? I mean, you've seen circles for "Most interactive photographers", The Kick Ass Photographers", "The Inspirational Photographers", "The best Nature and Wildlife Photographers", and the list goes on.

This post contains a list and a circle. The circle contains the 500 most followed photographers with less than 60'000 followers.  The list is a list of photographers that have more than 60'000 followers.  Most people on the list have over 1 million followers because they are on the G+ list of suggested users (commonly referred to as the SUL).

But who are the most followed ? Here is an updated version of a circle  I shared a few months back. I have tried to find all of the top photographers and add them to this circle. Obviously the last 50 places probably change daily so this is the list as I checked it before sharing. The number of followers needed to be on the list has changed a lot over the last 4 months.  Back in February you needed  13'117 followers, in mid-June that number is around 17'200.

Why is this circle of interest ? Well, because it wasn't chosen by me or any other individual. It was chosen by the G+ community. Some of the people in the circle are great photographers, some are great at being interactive, some are just plain good at marketing themselves, and many have a combination of the above. But, in the end, the G+ community has chosen them as the top 550 photographers to follow.

    • Why is xxxx not on the list ?  Photographers that haven't been active on G+ for more than 6 weeks weren't included.  Several photographers that only post sporadically and generally less than one post a month aren't included
    • If you find someone on the list that you don't really think is a photographer, send me an email and / or a private post and I'll look into removing them or leave a comment below.
    • If you know of someone that I missed that has more than 17'200 followers, let me know and I'll add them to the list for next time.
    • You could call this the User's Choice Award circle because people on G+ have chosen to follow the people in this list and circle.

Why share this circle ? Photographers were among the first people to embrace G+. Over the last few months I have seen photographers add significant numbers of followers and fall in over all standings. Wordy people and celebrities are overtaking photographers. +Trey Ratcliff +Thomas Hawk and +Lisa Bettany are the only photographers in the top 50 on G+.

This circle doesn't use words like best, or kickass it's simply who you have chosen. Every person in this circle should probably be among the 5000 people that you circle. The large following usually indicates people generating some very nice content and / or highly interactive people that you want to circle.

I would like to thank +Robert SKREINER.  I used his list of 10'000 photographers to help validate my list and fill in a few holes.  I would also like to thank Daniel Treadwell and Group.as.  Without the group.as website, validating a circle like this is nearly impossible.  The two primary lists are on group.as. (A word of warning, the lists on group.as aren't identical to what's in this circle. )

*Four years ago today*  (Friday the 13th)....  :o)
the Cedar River crested and changed part of our city...
If you look at the photo, the shop I work in is in the upper left corner. We had just over 8 foot of water rush through! This was a "500 year" flood. When they tell you to expect 4 foot at the most, and then change it to over 8 and not let you back in to get your stuff.... you lose everything....
Not trying to bash on Louisiana... but, nobody looted or shot at helicopters trying to help around here.... everybody went above and beyond to help their neighbors and even people they didn't know.
This was not water rising then going back down, it was a rapidly flowing river that moved houses off their foundations and gas station fuel tanks almost 1/4 mile down river in the middle of a city!

    Check out the stats.....
    -31.12 feet: Cedar River’s crest on June 13, 2008.
-11.12 feet: Level above previous record crest (1851 and 1929).
-9.36 feet: Level river rose in eight hours the day before crest.
-14 percent: Amount of city covered by water, totaling 10 square miles or 1,126 city blocks.
-8 days: time after crest it took Cedar River to drop below flood stage.
    -7,749: Total properties flooded.
    -5,390: Residential properties flooded.
    -1,049: Commercial properties flooded.
-18,623: Estimated city residents directly impacted by flooding.
-1,413: Total number of flood structures demolished so far (979 residential, 428 outbuildings, six commercial)
-2020: Year city expects reconstruction and replacement of all flood-damaged homes and businesses to finish.

A great write up from the Chief of police that my cousin worked for.

The bigger picture is never really shown to us, but sometimes small grains get revealed to keep us looking to the future.... There is always a reason for why things happen, it's just a matter of how you want to look at them...

    In honor of my Cousin

EOW 6/6/08 Badge # 337 Officer Todd Bahr of the Fredericksburg VA PD

Note; this photo is not mine, I would gladly give credit to the owner, I found it on a site 4 years ago.

This is very much my cousin Todd.... the comedic, friendliest, most professional police officer you could have ever met. Who else would bring donuts to an officer in his car?!! LOL!
I know there are lots of times when cops get a bad rap... sometimes deservedly so, other times, not so...
Todd was the type of officer that all should strive to be... and the Police Chaplain at the funeral made sure the 1800+ officers there knew they had a standard to live up to. When you got pulled over by him, you knew you would be treated with respect and compassion. We had people from jail telling us they were relieved when they saw it was Todd that was going to be arresting them or pulling them over LOL.

Please take a minute to read the write up from the Fredericksburg paper here http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2008/062008/06122008/386422/index_html?page=1

The funny thing is, Todd hadn't even planned to be an officer growing up... I can remember quite the opposite! There was one time he was picking up his sister from work (at a bank) and was sitting in the parking lot for quite awhile. Next thing he knew, there were officers surrounding him pulling him out of the car! LOL!  Must have been the long hair and looking like a headbanger from a metal band.... wait a minute, that was me too! Little did they know, but he would later end up being the guy who sold them their guns and did weapons training for them through his gun shop business. After 9/11/01 he felt the need to do something... he decided he was too old for military so he started training to be an "auxiliary" on his own time on nights and weekends. After he completed all his training, he was hired on and served 2 years before being killed... the first fatality in about 46 years? for the Fredericksburg PD.

My brother and I rode in the second vehicle for the funeral procession. The best way for me to sum up what I saw from the communities of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania, the Freedom Riders, and everyone else that came to honor him, is.... I felt like I was in the funeral procession of a President or a soldier's body returning home! There is no way to express the feelings of seeing the streets lined with people saluting, crying, hand over their hearts, and just honoring him......  thousands of officers at attention from across the country and Canada, being led by 40-50 motorcycle cops....

    There are just no words...........

    R.I.P. Cuz' !!
