True intimacy is born from vulnerability....vulnerability is the willingness to risk saying things and doing things without one's guard up...it's willing to not say "everything is fine" and, instead say, "here's what's on my mind"...

It's not guarded and concerned with keeping some one around, but wanting them to know the truth about who we are...to show our fears and imperfections to another and risk rejection...

Vulnerability come with trust and trust must be given freely to love and it's hard to give when we're wounded....and we are wounded when we choose not to forgive and give value to pain over people..where we seek protection behind walls and lock ourselves away...

To find intimacy, it takes a leap of faith and a willingness to forgive and heal continually...

No record of wrongs can hold value, but hope and growth stand central and lead the direction to the cause...

Intimacy says "know me, I hide nothing from you...and, show me, I want to accept all of you and appreciate you..."

Here is a child who tried to bridge a divide, to challenge her teachers to keep on teaching and her peers to not just be students but to be learners. What did she get in return? Retaliation from her teachers and from the school administrators. It takes a lot of courage for students (children, really) to tell the truth and for the situation to be handled the way that it was is unconscionable. Their actions or lack of proper action illustrates her point exactly.

I will be calling their Board of Ed and the City of Rochester, NY to voice my distaste.

Google+ is Google 2.0

There's been a lot of talk around whether or not Google+ is a success. Some have described Google+ as a ghost town but these new stats on usage show that Google+ is growing faster than ever.

- Over 50M daily active user
- Over 100M 7-day active user

By all accounts, these are impressive numbers. But, more importantly, it's important not to look at the success of Google+ as a standalone service which competes against the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Google+ should be seen as the next version of Google - Google 2.0.

+Vic Gundotra sums it up nicely "We have started the social engines at Google and we’re about to step on the gas.”

Can't wait to see how the story unfolds.

I got a kick outta this.

My husband, +Lenin Perdomo, is the most disciplined man I know. He has been training in several martial arts [judo, jujutsu, and aikido] since he was a child and has earned several black belts in those arts. Currently, he is a student of Kendo/Kumdo and will be testing for his black belt this spring. In addition to all that insanity, he runs, does yoga, and does whatever he can to stay fit, strong, and healthy for his brood. Haha. He recently signed up for the Spartan race and has taken up screaming, "This is Spartaaaaaa!" randomly throughout the day. LOL. Our lil' guy, who's 2, now imitates him when he does this except it sounds like, "Iss Isss ArrrArrrrrrrr!

behind the video: message from your heart

happy thanksgiving! i can't tell you how grateful i am to have the opportunity to share my music with all of you lovely people. last week was my 5-year anniversary of sharing my music on youtube, so it only seemed right to choose "message from your heart" this week, the very first video i ever made.

at the time, i was living in austin, tx and pursuing music after graduating from the university of southern california. it was my first taste of getting to really identify as an artist and spend all of my time focusing on music. i was gigging every chance i could, between open mics, coffee shops, cafes and night clubs. i generally stayed up until around 4am and slept in until an embarrassing hour. for the most part i had no idea what i was doing or what my plan was, but the one constant was that i spent a LOT of time alone in my bedroom playing music.

it started out like any other night, alone and delirious and bored and... hey. my computer has a camera on it? maybe i should sing it a song? oh, maybe i should animate a little dancing heart? maybe i should become a crazy person and stay up until 8am editing a video for no reason whatsoever?

that's basically how it went. purely for my own entertainment. but once 8am rolled around i had this incredible urge to share it, so i started a youtube channel, uploaded it to a private setting, sent a link to my family, and fell asleep. the responses didn't come right away, so i started getting really uncomfortable and embarrassed and kind of wanted to go hide forever, but eventually they came in, and i guess they were positive (or neutral) enough for me to feel ok with it living there. i still had zero intention of ever sharing it with the public.

soon after, i caught wind of a contest called "doritos crash the super bowl." all you needed to enter was an original song and video. i entered "message" and promptly forgot about it. a couple weeks later i got a call from the lovely people of doritos notifying me that i'd made it into the top 10 finalists. i was shocked! and so it began, the beginning of what would spark everything i'd accomplish in the next 5 years. i had to get  people to vote everyday, so i started a campaign called "two weeks for kina" where i posted a video every day in exchange for people's votes. i made it into the final round, and "two weeks" turned into two months of daily videos and sleeplessness and insanity. i never expected more than friends and family and a few nice strangers to get behind it... but then things started changing. the most incredible community of amazing and wonderful humans from around the world began to form around my videos and blogs (or "bla(h)gs, as i liked to call them). they became my family. the family grew and grew and eventually they named themselves "kinerds," created "kination," and all the while helped spread the word about my music and in general make my life a much happier place. then, one fine super bowl afternoon, my music video aired on tv in front of 97 million people and i was signed to interscope records. i was too sleep-deprived and adrenaline-filled at this point to register any of this, but i knew that something was changing, and from that point forward my life was going to be about music.

to make a long story short, i ended up leaving the label to make my music on my own. we had different plans for my music, and thanks to the new found support from all of you lovely people of the internet, i had the confidence to move forward with my vision on my own (though i wasn't really "on my own" after all. kinerds ftw!)

i will never understand how i got so lucky, how this little video changed my whole life and brought so many incredible people into my world, how i stumbled upon such an amazing way to connect with people through youtube, how so many people have chosen to support me and my music and have allowed me share my music and my words and tour around the world. it's madness. 

this thanksgiving, i'm giving a special thanks to the little video that started it all AND most importantly to all of you who've made every step possible.

some tid bits about the video:
- the heart: i cut the heart out of card stock, glued a tube of card stock to the back of it, inserted the tube through a background piece of card stock and then twisted it from the back to make it beat. go heart!
- the tree painting: one of my best friends from high school, tina toosky (an awesome artist and now doctor!!), painted this for me years and years ago. it's actually based off of my song "next time" from my first album "sincerely, me." i love it very much. (the painting, not the song. not that i don't care about the song. err)
- the guitar in the corner of the room: a little classical guitar i bought while traveling in costa rica. i wrote my song "cambridge" on it while i was there.
- the keyboard in the corner of the room: i was borrowing this from a friend and wrote "stars falling down" on it with a crazy choir sample setting.
- hippety heart: this is a shirt my mom designed for a dentist back in the day (she's a graphic designer), but growing up my sisters and i pretty much lived in this shirt. my mom also made up a song called "hippety heart," sung to the tune of "winnie the pooh". you can see video of my sisters and i singing it here: Hippety Heart- 6 yr old Kina + sisters

I've been so sick lately that I haven't had the energy to even go to the market to shop for Thanksgiving.  When I told my nine year old daughter that we would have to postpone celebrating Thanksgiving until Mommy was feeling better she understood but she had this underlying sadness on her face. Originally, we were supposed to go to my Dad's.   Now, at 3:43am, I've decided to hit the market as soon as they open to pick up a chicken roaster, a roast beef, a pie, and lots of salad.  Just so we can have a nice, small dinner.  And so I can see her smile.    Wish me luck, I hope the markets are still well stocked this morning.

Allow me a moment to vent.  I am SO freaking tired!  I have been some kind of sick since July.  It started with eczema in my, ahem, we're all friends here, right?... in my girly parts.  Then I started lactating and I'm not even preggo.  Now that the eczema is almost gone I have something new to deal with.  A headache that is now 10 days old which is most likely due to my newly diagnosed high blood pressure.  I found out I had high BP on Saturday when I had a nosebleed that accompanied the neverending headache.  The doc's office sent me to the ER. The high blood pressure that is still high and the meds I'm on is not controlling it.  So, today, I go for a brain MRI, this is from my endocrinologist who is trying to figure out why my non-pregnant self is lactating.  And then I go back to my primary doctor to figure out new dosage to regulate my blood pressure.  I'm tired, physically, mentally, emotionally...  I just want to sleep and wake up my old normal self.   I think the old has something to do with it... I'm turning 34 on Saturday... does all this come with that?  LOL.  

OK, vent over.

I'm going for a brain MRI at noon tomorrow.  A first for me.  What should I expect?  Someone told me it's loud.  That will not help with the never ending headache I have... now 9 days long.

A little John Mayer to start your day.  Going to my doc for a follow up to my ER visit Saturday night.  She'll probably tell to eat cardboard and run everywhere and I should be just fine.  LOL.

I don't really get why people are up in arms about Romney not conceding or calling Obama yet? Is it THAT serious? I mean, if you voted for Obama, he won already. Isn't that all that what matters the most right now? I dunno, maybe there's a 10 minute rule I don't know about, y'know? When the media announces the projected winner, the one who doesn't win has to call the winner in 10 mins otherwise he's a "sore loser" (as my FB newsfeed tells me Romney is). People make a big deal over the silliest things! Really!

Need your help PLUSSERS!  I have 3 managers in my district that have suffered devastating losses due to #Sandy.  In addition to a clothing drive, I  want to start a fundraising site  and wanted to get some suggestions/advice from you all in case you've done this before.  Anyone know of reputable online fundraising sites?

Hope all you East Coast Plussers are ok. We lost power and heat Sunday night at 9pm. Mobile service is shoddy at best. Still the same status today so we decided to head to my sister's who has all the comforts we lack. The nights have been too cold without heat. Other than that we are lucky and blessed to have suffered so little. #Sandy is definitely one to remember.

On this day, last year, we had that freak snow storm here in NYC. I was also lucky enough to be with these lovely ladies at the Redbook Magazine office for our Mommy Tummy Challenge photo shoot. Happy anniversary, you sexy Mamas!

Frankenstorm #Sandy  is still 250 miles away.  Raining now with winds at 27mph.  Oh, and we have Frankenstorm Logan in the house, he's busy watching Pocoyo youtube vids so we're safe from his destruction for right now.  :)

The winds are howling and we're not even in the brunt of the storm yet.  I'm really hoping we don't lose power!  East Coast Plussers, hope you've got all your provisions and are somewhere safe.

Taking a trip down memory lane.   This was me 3 years ago, 7 months pregnant with my alien, I mean, Logan.

I'm overseeing our district while my boss takes some personal time.  All I've been doing these past two days is listening to Hurricane Sandy updates because should Sandy be as big and bad as they say she is, the decision to open or close 14 stores falls on me.  Sandy's timing is uncanny.

Hurricane Sandy is poised to make a landing in the good ol' Garden State.  In light of this news, I'm looking forward to Gov. Christie's press cons telling people to "Get the hell of the beach!"   But why wait, let's take a trip down memory lane via good ol' youtube.
