It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach
So says the family of Aaron Swartz in a statement. Aaron 26 was found dead, he had hanged himself the coroner reports.
His family also said :He used his prodigious skills as a programmer and technologist not to enrich himself but to make the Internet and the world a fairer, better place
.A victory for the US justice system ?
The US justice system no longer has to worry about the threat posed by Aaron Swartz the 26 year old who co-authored RSS at the age of 14 and was an early developer of Reddit. He was a champion of internet freedom and battled against SOPA. He was also a fellow at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics
The US Justice system was pursuing him with 13 felony accounts threatening him with a fine of 1 million dollars and more than 35 years in prison if convicted.His crime ?Downloading academic journal articles with the intent of sharing them online for free with others
Alex Stamos, CEO of Artemis Internet, is a computer forensics investigator employed by the Swartz legal defense as an expert witness. On January 12, 2012, he posted a summary of the expert testimony he was prepared to present in the JSTOR case, concluding "I know a criminal hack when I see it, and Aaron’s downloading of [academic] journal articles from an unlocked closet is not an offense worth 35 years in jail
Lawrence Lessig, an attorney and friend of Aaron's, called his prosecution an abuse of proportionality and said "the question this government needs to answer is why it was so necessary that Aaron Swartz be labeled a felon

=========================================Sir Tim Berners-Lee
- the European inventor of the World Wide Web
- commemorated Mr Swartz in a Twitter post: "Aaron dead. World wanderers, we have lost a wise elder. Hackers for right, we are one down. Parents all, we have lost a child. Let us weep."Today I weep. This is truly a loss for us all

left a tribute for Aaron Swartz on a MIT page that was hacked saying : Whether or not the government contributed to his suicide, the government's prosecution of Swartz was a grotesque miscarriage of justice, a distorted and perverse shadow of the justice that Aaron died fighting for - freeing the publicly-funded scientific literature from a publishing system that makes it inaccessible to most of those who paid for it - enabling the collective betterment of the world through the facilitation of sharing - an ideal that we should all support
