Message to AMIR KHAN - READ AND SHARE ALL MEDICOS N DOCTORS.
Dear Mr. Amir Khah, “NOT ALL DOCTORS ARE GREEDY” “THERE IS NO PROFESSION THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CLEAN”
“DOCTORS ARE OBLIGED TO SERVE BY CHOICE, NOT BY COMPULSION”
Sir, I have been a big fan or your work, life and principles. I am also a fan of ‘Satyamev Jayate’. But I was shocked to see the episode on 27th May, 2012. You are an Icon. You should have thought well and done the homework before doing such a biased show. There are only two people in the film industry that are being taken seriously by the thinking class of society, You and Amitabh Bacchhan. So, when you give such a biased and one sided version of a story, it hurts. Speaking about such a thing on a “commercial” TV show is bad. (I am sure you have taken a big amount, only doctor are supposed to do charity and social work, not actors!!! Right!)

I want to highlight few important points here. And yes I am qualified to make observations as I am a medical student.

1. Your guests and audience (the words were almost put in their mouth) said that private colleges charge a capitation fee of 40 – 50 Lacs for MBBS, you should have also produced some evidence of such practice. Like you call a victim in all your episodes, why not here? And do the same story Engineering, Architecture, Law and MBA colleges, do you think they are clean? Why target doctors alone?

2. You said Since 2001, government opened 31 medical colleges and 106 private institutes were opened. – Please note that today in India, there are a total of 181 Private and 152 Govt Medical colleges. So the number is not as bad s you projected. Don’t project only the time period which suits your story. Either give a complete picture or do not give a picture at all! And also, please find out how many of these private colleges are owned by politicians? 95% of Private colleges in India are owned and run by politicians. It is a bloody nexus between politicians and MCI. The corruption by politicians is to blamed for the mess, not doctors!!!

3. One of your guest (Dr. Gulhati) said that doctors ask for 30% commission from Pharma companies to write their drugs. That is baseless, over-the-roof and sensationalizing the matter. That is as true as “Most Leading actors ask newcomers to sleep with them” or “Lawyers take money from both the sides in a legal battle” or “Most chartered accountants teach their clients how to save tax and also pass info to taxman on where his client saved tax”. I know all of you will shout “Where is the proof?”. So are doctors!!! I am not trying to sensationalize things as you did on your show by shading those fake tears, but just trying to project that allegations are easy to make. I know you will say that this was the opinion of our guest, and not yours. But you provided a platform for these fake allegations.

4. You compared the numbers of Licenses cancelled in England and in India. I must say your team is quite resourceful and please collect and compare following details also –

a. Number of doctors beaten on duty by goons from various political outfits in government hospitals in UK and India in last 10 years, and also the number of people convicted for such crime.

b. The Stipend (Salary a post-graduate trainee doctor/intern gets) or Salary and accommodation facilities provided to the doctors of the two countries.

c. The duty hours and working conditions of the doctors of the two countries.

d. The academic and research infrastructure being provided to the medical students.

5. You said that the most brilliant students who take up medicine, should take it only for service to mankind, they should go to other fields if they want to earn. Why? Are we living in imperialism? Are doctors not allowed to earn and spend a good life? You were asking Dr. Devi Shetty whether he can do humanitarian work and Earn at same time? This is like asking Amirkhan or Shahrukh-khan their income and generalizing it for every actor in the industry (Even junior artists). Sir, just as there are only few Khans and Kapoors, There are even fewer Devi Shetty and Naresh Trehan who run their chain of Multi-specialty hospitals spread all over the country. See what it takes to become a doctor and then give such “Geeta-Gyan”.

a. 5 and half year of MBBS training and 1 more year of Compulsory Rural Internship at Rs. 15000 - 20000 per month. (Any other field eg. Engineering, Management, a person would become Postgraduate in this much time and start earning double the amount.) If one doesn’t study further, the pay at this step is 22,000 per month.

b. After above 6 and half years of Graduation, 3 more years of Postgraduation, followed again by compulsory rural / Government job for 1 year or pay Rs. 25Lac bond. If one doesn’t study further, the pay at this step is 40,000 per month.

c. After this above 10 and half years, 3 more years of Superspeciality, followed by 1 year of Govt job or a Bond of Rs. 2 Crore. And the seats are so few with tough competition, there tends to be a gap of a year or two in preparing for various entrance exams.

6. Why only Doctors are being forced to work in rural and government hospitals after their study? Why only we should pay government if we don’t want to do it? The rural/Govt sector needs help of Engineers, Lawyers, Chartered Accountants and MBAs also. Why aren’t the Engineers sent to rural areas to design and monitor roads and industrials development? Why aren’t the Lawyers forced to work as Public prosecutors before they can join some big foreign corporate firm? Why aren’t the CAs asked to work in CAG office and various other government financial sectors before joining Multinational Giants? Now government wants that doctors should not immigrate to other countries without asking them. Why? Are the IIT/IIM students stopped before they flee to foreign countries for big fat salaries? So, why us? What is it that government of society has done for doctors that they should repay? They bloody can’t even protect them from goons while on duty.

7. You say that doctors are writing unnecessary and costly medications. Do we decide the price of a drug? Do we manufacture or give license to drug manufacturers? Controlling the price of essential drugs is a government job. We are helpless. Sir, its easy to point fingers. We don’t say that all is well. But all is not well anywhere. Its a different thing creating awareness about dowry or female feticide. But its entirely different to comment on such a technical and complicated issue without getting into the details of it. You have maligned the entire medical fraternity. For every 10 doctors who are doing wrong, there are more than 1000 healers. You owe us an apology!!!
This issue is not as simple as you think it is! Please show stories which are unbiased and straight- forward. You cannot do justice to such an issue, especially after charging a whooping amount for creating awareness!!! (We hear that Amir has charged 3 crores for episode of satyamevjayate in which he spreads the message to doctors that they should not make money and do social service!!! How sacred!!! I don’t know if its true, but well, it’s the season of allegations!)

“We Doctors may be doing little social service, But at least we are not charging for it!” - Doctor

N.B. - Although I did not made this post (credits to original post-creator), I just reformatted it, so that it becomes easy to read. But I DO agree with all of the points stated above.

           The Dynamic Tower of Dubai

The first moving building in the world will be built, where else, in Dubai, home to all the revolutionary architectural wonders in recent years.
The Dynamic Tower will be made up of 80 pre-fabricated apartments rotating around a central column, with the help of 79 giant wind turbines placed between the floors. The 420 meters-long building will never look the same, not once in a lifetime, the apartments will be able to spin 360 degrees, giving the tower a different look every time.

I say nonsense. All it does is insult the corrupt politicians who insult the national symbol every day.

HELL EXPLAINED BY A CHEMISTRY STUDENT

The following is an actual question given on a University of
    *Washington *chemistry
    mid-term.

The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it
with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the
pleasure of enjoying it as well :

Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs
    heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas
cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need
to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which
they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets
to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how
many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that
    exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their
religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these
religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can
project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are,
we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now,
we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law
states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the
same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

    This gives two possibilities:

    1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all
    Hell breaks loose.

    2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in
Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.

    So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year
that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take
into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two
must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already
frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen
over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore,
extinct......leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine
being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting 'Oh my God.'

    THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+.

Tell Congress not to censor the internet!
    Avaaz - Save the Internet: http://goo.gl/gF7hE | fightforthefuture.org/pipa

"Google knows it. Viacom knows it. The Chamber of Commerce knows it. Internet democracy groups know it. BoingBoing knows it. But, the Internet hasn't been told yet -- we're going to get blown away by the end of the year. The worst bill in Internet history is about to become law. Law is very real here in the United States and legal language is often different than stated intentions -- this law would give government and corporations the power to block sites like BoingBoing over infringing links on at least one webpage posted by their users. Believe the EFF, Public Knowledge, Google when they say this bill is about much more than copyright, it's about the Internet and free speech everywhere.

The MPAA, RIAA, Hollywood knows that they have been flying in CEOs of as many companies as possible, recruiting people to get petition signups at malls in California, and here's the big point-- they know they have gotten their message through to Congress -- the worst bill in Internet history, the one where government and their corporations get unbelievable power to take down sites, threaten payment processors into stopping payment to sites on a blacklist, and throw people in jail for posting ordinary content is about to pass before the end of this year. The only thing that is going to stop Hollywood from owning the Internet and everything we do, is if there is a big surprise Internet backlash starting right now.

PROTECT IP (S. 968)/SOPA (HR. 3261) creates the first system for Internet censorship - this bill has sweeping provisions that give the government and corporations leeway and legal cover for taking down sites "by accident," mistakenly, or for NOT doing "enough" to protect the interests of Hollywood. These bills that are moving very quickly through Congress and can pass before Christmas aim to give the US government and corporations the ability to block sites over infringing links posted by their users and give ISPs the release to take any means to block peoples' sites, including slowing down your connection. That's right, some say this bill is a workaround to net neutrality and is bigger than net neutrality." via: http://goo.gl/pTTbC

Some weeks ago some people pointed me to +Steve Newcomb's "game engine" famo.us ($1.1M funding).

If you haven't seen it, here's their presentation at TechCrunch Disrupt:

    http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/10/famo-us-is-a-gaming-engine-for-3d-interfaces/

The way it was presented, "this is not X, this is not Y... but I'm not going to tell you what it is" reminded me to Euclideon videos:

Unlimited Detail Real-Time Rendering Technology Preview 2011 [HD]

Back to famo.us "game engine". Ok, so It's not WebGL and is not Canvas. It can only be CSS3D it seems to run without plugins in the browser. Also, if you look at the video carefully, only when the demo is running as an app the elements use additive blending, when it's running on the browser there is no additive blending.

Now, lately I've been working on the CSS3DRenderer for +three.js as a solution for the current iOS situation. So, I just got curious and decided to try to replicate the demo and see if it could be CSS3D.

For testing the waters I first did a simple panorama test:

    http://mrdoob.com/lab/javascript/threejs/css3d/panorama/

Performance seemed pretty decent. So next I spent quite a while writing the array with all the elements (I can't believe they made me memorise all these in school...) and after a bit of actual code I got something pretty similar:

    http://mrdoob.com/lab/javascript/threejs/css3d/periodictable/

Yeah, I didn't bother to replicate all the interaction, neither to add the Ironman picture on the background. I guess it's good enough as it is. But hey, while I was at it I made TrackballControls touch-friendly ^^

Attached is a video of how it runs on an iPad 2. (Sorry for the cheesy music, but the original video had the same.)

    G+ on your Gmail

Gmail is my base. Not Google+. I have a personal Gmail account and Google Apps Gmail for work. Both mail accounts contain more than 100 thousand messages but my two inboxes have less than 10.

I like my Gmail so much because I look forward checking them as Gmail allows me to receive just quality mails using filters. If not, I change my filter so that I get quality in the future. It's like a computer game with real life input and you earn efficiency as points.

Since last June 19 my G+ life is different. Since that day it is possible to respond to every Google+ notification in Gmail. I'll show you how to do that, but first some advantages:
    * You can stay in Gmail
    * You never have to miss a G+ comment or mention, which used to happen to me all the time
    * You don't have to deal with the unstable notifications both in the browser as in mobile
    * You don't have to worry that your notifications scroll out of 10 long as happens in the G+ notifications window. In Gmail they're sitting there patiently waiting for you as unread
    * You can avoid the G+ app if you're on an expensive data program e.g. roaming abroad
    * You can finetune your notification types using filters, even unselect a sender
    * You can get rid of the red square (through an extension) and the status (using an app) in your mobile
    * You can search in Gmail. Did you ever notice how hard it is to search in Google+?

    So how to go about:
    1. In a Google site, click on your name (top right), Account settings, Google+, switch on all notifications by email. Don't be a wuss. Click them all. You won't see them
    2. In the Gmail search bar type:
    from:plus.google.com -subject:"added you"
Click on the dropdown triangle, click bottom right Create new filter
Select boxes Skip Inbox, Apply label "g+" (create that label), Never send it to Spam
    Press bottom left Create filter
Now you could see a g+ message appear, like the illustation attached, where on the left it shows one unread message and when I click on it, it shows all messages with the unread on the top.
Note: there is a minus sign before subject this means from Google Plus but not the notifications that are about who added who.
    3. Manage your labels here: https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/labels so that you don't see many of them. Like my example in the illustation, on the left it has only one label. I like simplicity.

You'll never see the messages in your inbox, you can reply to all and +1 in your browser (not mobile). If you want to get rid of the red notification box, use http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/120626 if you want to see notifications on your mobile, use a Gmail notifier for label g+ (I like an app for this but you can also use the status bar).

Wanna know what my other labels are in the illustration? They're experiments: [tom] is for label where I'm notified in a post and [c-] is when a post or comment is not coming from one of my circles.

PS I like to have the left column as a notifier and hence saving up some notifications but if you don't want to click and surprise yourself, you can also have them pushed on your screen with the Gmail lab ( https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/labs ) Multiple Inboxes. Once you acitvated this in Labs you can here: https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings/lighttlist add a section for label:g+ (even add AND is:unread) and click on Below your inbox. Also make sure you can see your new section, you set your inbox to 15 long here: https://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#settings, right at the top. A small inbox length is a good exercise for archiving, if you're not already doing that.

An open letter to India's graduating classes

    Dear Graduates and Post-Graduates,

This is your new employer. We are an Indian company, a bank, a consulting firm, a multinational corporation, a public sector utility and everything in between. We are the givers of your paycheck, of the brand name you covet, of the references you will rely on for years to come and of the training that will shape your professional path.

Millions of you have recently graduated or will graduate over the next few weeks. Many of you are probably feeling quite proud - you've landed your first job, discussions around salaries and job titles are over, and you're ready to contribute.

Life is good - except that it's not. Not for us, your employers, at least. Most of your contributions will be substandard and lack ambition, frustrating and of limited productivity. We are gearing ourselves up for broken promises and unmet expectations. Sorry to be the messenger of bad news.

Today, we regret to inform you that you are spoiled. You are spoiled by the "India growth story"; by an illusion that the Indian education system is capable of producing the talent that we, your companies, most crave; by the imbalance of demand and supply for real talent; by the deceleration of economic growth in the mature West; and by the law of large numbers in India, which creates pockets of highly skilled people who are justly feted but ultimately make up less than 10 percent of all of you.

So why this letter, and why should you read on? Well, because based on collective experience of hiring and developing young people like you over the years, some truths have become apparent. This is a guide for you and the 15- to 20-year-olds following in your footsteps - the next productive generation of our country. Read on to understand what your employers really want and how your ability to match these wants can enrich you professionally.

There are five key attributes employers typically seek and, in fact, will value more and more in the future. Unfortunately, these are often lacking in you and your colleagues.

1.You speak and write English fluently: We know this is rarely the case. Even graduates from better-known institutions can be hard to understand.

Exhibit No. 1: Below is an actual excerpt from a resume we received from a "highly qualified and educated" person. This is the applicant's "objective statement:"

"To be a part of an organization wherein I could cherish my erudite dexterity to learn the nitigrities of consulting"

Huh? Anyone know what that means? We certainly don't.

And in spoken English, the outcomes are no better. Whether it is a strong mother tongue influence, or a belief (mistakenly) that the faster one speaks the more mastery one has, there is much room for improvement. Well over half of the pre-screened résumés lack the English ability to effectively communicate in business.

So the onus, dear reader, is on you - to develop comprehensive English skills, both written and oral.

    2. You are good at problem solving, thinking outside the box, seeking new ways of doing things: Hard to find. Too often, there is a tendency to simply wait for detailed instructions and then execute the tasks - not come up with creative suggestions or alternatives.

Exhibit No. 2: I was speaking with a colleague of mine who is a chartered accountant from Britain and a senior professional. I asked him why the pass percentage in the Indian chartered accountant exam was so low and why it was perceived as such a difficult exam.

Interestingly (and he hires dozens of Indian chartered accountants each year), his take is as follows: the Indian exam is no harder than the British exam. Both focus on the application of concepts, but since the Indian education system is so rote-memorization oriented, Indian students have a much more difficult time passing it than their British counterparts.

Problem-solving abilities, which are rarely taught in our schooling system, are understandably weak among India's graduates, even though India is the home of the famous "jugadu," the inveterate problem solver who uses what's on hand to find a solution. Let's translate this intrinsic ability to the workforce.

    3. You ask questions, engage deeply and question hierarchy: How we wish!

Exhibit No. 3: Consistently, managers say that newly graduated hires are too passive, that they are order-takers and that they are too hesitant to ask questions. "Why can't they pick up the phone and call when they do not understand something?" is a commonly asked question.
You are also unduly impressed by titles and perceived hierarchy. While there is a strong cultural bias of deference and subservience to titles in India, it is as much your responsibility as it is ours to challenge this view.

    4. You take responsibility for your career and for your learning and invest in new skills: Many of you feel that once you have got the requisite degree, you can go into cruise control. The desire to learn new tools and techniques and new sector knowledge disappears. And we are talking about you 25- to 30-year-olds - typically the age when inquisitiveness and hunger for knowledge in the workplace is at its peak.

Exhibit No. 4: Recently, our new hires were clamoring for training. Much effort went into creating a learning path, outlining specific courses (online, self-study) for each team. With much fanfare, an e-mail was sent to the entire team outlining the courses.

How many took the trainings? Less than 15 percent. How many actually read the e-mail? Less than 20 percent.

The desire to be spoon-fed, to be directed down a straight and narrow path with each career step neatly laid out, is leading you toward extinction, just like the dinosaurs. Your career starts and ends with you. Our role, as your employer, is to ensure you have the tools, resources and opportunities you need to be successful. The rest is up to you.

    5. You are professional and ethical: Everyone loves to be considered a professional. But when you exhibit behavior like job hopping every year, demanding double-digit pay increases for no increase in ability, accepting job offers and not appearing on the first day, taking one company's offer letter to shop around to another company for more money - well, don't expect to be treated like a professional.

Similarly, stretching yourself to work longer hours when needed, feeling vested in the success of your employer, being ethical about expense claims and leaves and vacation time are all part of being a consummate professional. Such behavior is not ingrained in new graduates, we have found, and has to be developed.

So what can we conclude, young graduates?

My message is a call to action: Be aware of these five attributes, don't expect the gravy train to run forever, and don't assume your education will take care of you. Rather, invest in yourself - in language skills, in thirst for knowledge, in true professionalism and, finally, in thinking creatively and non-hierarchically. This will hold you in good stead in our knowledge economy and help lay a strong foundation for the next productive generation that follows you.

Together, I hope we, your employer, and you, the employee, can forge an enduring partnership.

New optical microscope can see individual blood cells as they flow in your body

Researchers at the biomedical engineering department of the Israel Institute of Technology, or Technion, have invented a new optical microscope that has the resolution to see individual blood cells as they flow through the body. This sort of scan can reveal much the same information as a traditional blood test, only in real-time, simply by shining a light through the skin. Other blood-scanning systems with cellular resolution exist in the medical field. But those systems are less practical, have much larger equipment or use potentially harmful fluorescent dyes that must be injected into the bloodstream. This new device is about the size of a breadbox but they hope to have a finger sized prototype of a more powerful and versatile unit within a year. This technology has tremendous potential to change how we image parts and processes in the body.

Most people shy away from trying Linux because of fears it would corrupt existing windows installations and documents.
Well, it used to be true actually, but not any more.

Here's the best & easiest way to try out Ubuntu Linux without harming an existing Windows installation in any way. Oh, and you need not do any partitioning stuff as well!!!

Your understanding of the Universe is about to change...

Attention Science Lovers – Hangout at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a gigantic scientific instrument near Geneva, where it spans the border between Switzerland and France, about 100 m (or 300 feet) underground. It is a particle accelerator used by physicists to study the smallest known particles – the fundamental building blocks of all things. The Compact Muon Solenoid (or CMS) is one of the LHC's experiments, and is furthering our understanding of particle physics, from the minuscule world deep within atoms to the vastness of the Universe.

Come join us on an exclusive Google+ Hangout and visit the CMS underground experimental cavern – off-limits to most of the world. Have a virtual visit with with senior physicist Albert De Roeck. Learn more about the magical world of physics and ask us your questions.

Join us for the deepest ever Google+ Hangout!

Comment below to let us know why you would like to participate, and send in your questions! A few of you will be invited to join the Hangout.
