Thoughts On iOS7 From an Android Fan

Like many other people I was curious to see what Apple would come out with today in terms of updates to their mobile platform. As we all know iOS6 was dated and long overdue for an update. Let's face it, skeuomorphic design went out with the last decade in favor of the more modern, minimalist feel of flat design.

So how did Apple do? They did a great job of implementing a very nice, clean and modern UI. The design features they implemented were largely copied from Android, Windows Phone and WebOS. And what is wrong with that? Absolutely nothing.

Copying UI designs is hardly new a new concept as designs are as much about trends as music and hairstyles. Take an example from the side menu on the Facebook Mobile app. Now I'm not say the Facebook app is a good design, however they did get this one thing right. This small design change has in short time become a standard for native apps and mobile websites everywhere. As a Web developer I am always looking for inspiration from other well known websites.

So Why Then Are Android Fans So Vocal About This Update?

It's very simple really, Apple has made a pretty good living at poking at the things Android and it's OEM's have copied from iOS. There's a big lawsuit that's still fresh in our minds that had something to do with rounded corners, grids of icons, bounce back effects and oh yeah, squares. How can a company that is so against being copied, turn around and copy features made by the company they just sued for copying? God, that was a lot of referencing to copying. Anyway, to answer that question I'll copy a phrase from one of my favorite books.

In The Game of Patents, You Win or You Die

Apple is playing the patent game and let's face it, they're pretty good at it. Like Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones, like him or hate him, (chances are you hate him) you gotta admit he can play the game.

But that doesn't change the cheated feeling that us Android fanboys feel. I'm reminded of something I learned at a very young age, something my parents taught me. Something learned from society. And that is, if you take something, you give something back in return.

Come on Apple, if you're going to take Android's designs, you should share some of yours back. Design should be shared, fostered and allowed to flourish. Not stifled by ridiculously vague patent laws.

Energy ROM (CM9 Kang for Kindle Fire)

So after trying this ROM out for a day I have to say I am impressed. It is the most stable ICS ROM I've tried on the kindle so far. There are only a couple problems with it currently.

    1. No hardware acceleration. Basically nothing graphics intensive will work properly such as high-def video or certain games. For the most part this hasn't negatively impacted my experience while using the ROM. There are no ICS ROMS for the kindle that have HWA working right now anyway.
    2. Battery life is not that fantastic. CM7 had much better life.

Other than these two issues the ROM is relatively bug free, which is saying alot for an ICS ROM. I am going to continue using this as my daily as the ICS benefits for the tablet outweigh the drawbacks.

    Is Google Censoring Free Speech?
Several weeks ago, +Google was instrumental in thwarting one of the biggest threats ever to our freedom of speech. 4.5 million People signed Google’s petition to stop SOPA and PIPA and at least for the time being, congress listened. What you may not realize however is that around the same time, Google itself was removing a key feature that allowed us “little people” a chance to have our voices heard. A lot of you probably didn’t even know that this was done since the “Incoming Stream” was not a feature that stood out within the +Google+ application, however the potential that this little tool had was quite enormous.

Chances are you don’t know anything about me, and really why would you care to? I have never proven myself to be an individual worth circling, maybe that is until now. The thing is, I have a lot to talk about, but how are you supposed to ever hear what I’m saying? Even now it feels as if I’m yelling into an empty cave, hearing only my own voice echoing back at me.

The Incoming Stream helped to solve this problem. If you were in my circles but I not in yours, you would still have the opportunity to read this post through incoming. This gave me the opportunity to reach the people whose content I’m interested in and perhaps to share something interesting with them. If you think about it, this personifies what Google+ is; a way for everyone to speak and have their voice heard. But alas, it is not the case anymore. Google has removed the Incoming Stream and buried my voice deep in the sea of noise that is Google+.

What I don’t understand though is, why? If you look at +Dave Besbris post (https://plus.google.com/u/0/113882113745075873153/posts/Rjt66GLtnA2), no real concise reason is given. One reason that was given was that nobody used it. However, if you look at the responses in the thread, you will find the contrary is true. Another reason given was that it confused people. I must admit that this one is true as I was confused as to what it did for the longest time. However, when you think about it whose fault is that? In my opinion it is Google’s for not representing it properly and giving it a name that actually indicates its purpose such as “Shared with me” or “Posted to me”. At worst, why wasn’t it changed to an “opt-in” feature? And no, “Search Plus Your World” is not the answer, because guess what; I’m not in your world.

Do I really think that Google is censoring free speech? Obviously not; as Google has without a doubt demonstrated that they stand for anything but censorship. However, I do think Google was a little too hasty to pull the plug on the Incoming Stream without at least offering a reasonable alternative. With a few tweaks it seems to me that this little tool could have given aspiring bloggers or anyone really a chance for their voice to be heard, which in my opinion is what Google+ is all about.

At the time I posted this, there are 28 people who have me in circles, which means that if I’m lucky, maybe 15 people will actually read this post. I am willing to bet that if more people understood its purpose and value, then more would want to use incoming. Feel free to +1 or share this post if you (like me) want to see the “Incoming Stream” brought back.

A New Paragraph From George R. R. Martin's The Winds Of Winter

No, you read the correctly. For some reason Martin decided to release one new paragraph from the highly anticipated next book in the Song of Ice and Fire series.

Why exactly I'm not sure. I guess it's a teaser to whet people's appetites, but if that's so, then this particular paragraph is just sort of... well... a paragraph:

Somewhere off in the far distance, a dying man was screaming for his mother. "To horse!" a man was yelling in Ghiscari, in the next camp to the north of the Second Sons. "To horse! To horse!" High and shrill, his voice carried a long way in the morning air, far beyond his own encampment. Tyrion knew just enough Ghiscari to understand the words, but the fear in his voice would have been plain in any tongue. I know how he feels.

It's probably a lot more interesting in context I imagine. As a stand alone, not exactly riveting. Or maybe that's my increasing disinterest in the series talking. I'm not sure if it's how long that the story has taken to be told that's wearing on me, or the fact I'm just not enjoying the grimdark gritty realism or that he's now managed to kill basically all the characters I liked but my interest has been waning significantly even though the plot finally seems to be coming together.

The Winds of Winter will be published... whenever the hell Martin feels like it's done I guess.

    Android ROM building

I have long been an enthusiast of rooting and flashing ROMs on my devices, and as a career developer I've been wanting to take that to the next level. Well today I took the first step in doing that and built my first ROM from source.

While no coding was involved (yet), I spent the last week trying to get my build environment setup and get a successful build and was finally able to build it and flash it to my device.

Next step now will be to start digging into the code and see what I can come up with.

In steps the CM team that has been innovating around Android quite a bit lately. Could Cyanogenmod be the future of Android? Or is +Steve Kondik positioning himself and key developers to be acquired by Google?

Either way, stuff just got interesting.

    Auto Backup Photo's not available?

Ok this is driving me nuts. I just got back from vacation on which I took loads of pictures. As always I had auto backup on which worked just like it always has to upload all my pics. However, when I try to access the photo's from Google+ they are not available from any other device but the one I took the pictures from. There are photo's available that I had taken from my phone just a week ago, but none of the one's that I took over vacation.

I know I could post them from my phone with which I took them from but I want to do some organizing from the desktop site first.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a setting that changed somewhere?

A couple thoughts I had after watching last nights episode of Game of Thrones, The Red Wedding.

    1. Any theories there were regarding Jeyne Westerling just got seriously executed. I wonder if Talisa being killed was what Sophie Turner was talking about when she said that the book readers would be shocked. I know that I was blown away.

    2. I feel bad for those that have not read the books and have to wait until next year to find out what happens next. Yeah, I know there's still another episode left, but I'm pretty sure I know what's going to happen in it.

    3. As a follow-up to number 2, if you haven't read the books and you're ready to quit on the show, don't give up yet! It's just getting started my friends, and in time you will be glad you stuck with it.

Spoilers following: Do not read beyond unless you have read all the books.

The killing of Talisa Maegyr last night signified a lot of things for me. I'm not going to go into them all right now, but one in particular was that it seemed like GRRM was trying to tell us, "You're reading into it too much". Which makes me wonder about some other theories going around. R+L=J anyone?

While Joffrey's wedding was the thing that really helped me get past the Red Wedding while reading, our non-book-reading counterparts will likely not get the same luxury so soon. Because of this, I am pretty sure "Lady Stoneheart" will make an appearance next week (much earlier than she did in the books) to offer a little bit of respite for the ravaged viewer.

I purchased Cerberus a little while back, and it has proven to be one of the best app purchases ever. However, unlike this guy, I have not yet had to put the app to use and have always wondered if it would work given the situation.

Well over the last few days, this guy has been posting on a forum about his phone being stolen and giving regular updates as to the status. Eventually the police were able to recover his phone.

If you have time I suggest reading the thread, it is simply amazing!
