A Snowy Day in Tokyo, 01/14/2013
Heavy snow in Tokyo for the first time this winter! I took a walk in my neighborhood and took some photos. My neighborhood is not a busy place like Shinjuku or Shibuya, but here, you can hear the sound of the snow (or so I thought).

The Last Minute of Cherry Blossoms
The cherry blossoms had passed their peak, but still I was able to enjoy the spring festive atmosphere along the Nakameguro River in Meguro, Tokyo. I joined +Drink and Click™ Tokyo's March event. The theme of the photo contest this month is "black and white photography" but I couldn't resist taking a photo of the blossoms in color :p Thanks for organizing the event, +holger feroudj. Thanks for introducing the delicious pizzas to us, +Giovanni Piliarvu :D

I love this spot along the river on my way home from work. Few people are around there, and the cherry blossoms are lit up beautifully by the lights from the adjacent athletic field. With this, I don't feel the need to visit the crowded cherry blossom viewing spots.
仕事からの帰り道、神田川と荒玉水道が交差するあたりに咲く桜。人はほとんどいない。横の運動場からの光が満開の花をきれいに照らしだす。一人静かに、夜桜が楽しめるお気に入りのスポット。

Tokyo Tower is always illuminated in pink on October 1. It's part of the Pink Ribbon Campaign. I tried to find a good place to capture Tokyo Tower, the moon and other buildings in one frame, and this was the best place I found today.

Six months ago, I shot this place right in this angle (http://bit.ly/Q5VtdK). It was raining that day. Shooting under the thick rain clouds was rather interesting, but I prefer to shoot under a cloudless dark blue sky. Now the sky is getting clearer and clearer towards winter. I can't wait for those nights (This shot was taken at the beginning of November, and was the first cloudless shot this season).
東京・有明で半年前にこれと同じアングルの写真を撮影しました（http://bit.ly/Q5VtdK）。その時は厚い雨雲に覆われていて、カメラを雨滴から守るのが大変でした。そんな季節も遠り過ぎ、東京は乾燥した冬に向かっていきます。乾燥はお肌の大敵です…が、雲ひとつない澄み切った空が広がるのも冬の楽しみです。写真のような夜空を撮ることができるので、夜はじっとしていられないことが多くなるはずです（写真は11月の頭、このシーズン初の雲が全くない夜に撮影したものです）。

I joined +Trey Ratcliff's Tech Talk and Networking Event held at Google Japan Headquarters in Roppongi Hills. An interesting thing is that a lot of the attendees (including me) were enthusiastically taking photos of the view from the cafe space of Google's office during the networking event, almost forgetting about networking.

On November 10, 2012, some of the Google+ and Flickr photographers got together in Kamakura, Kanagawa, which was organized by +takashi kitajima. FYI, Kamakura is the place samurais opened their government in 1192. A lot of beautiful temples and shrines are located in the city, and it's a great place to feel ancient Japan.
During with the photowalk, we visited Hokokuji Temple which is famous for its bamboo bush garden. That was the place we took photos for the first-time photo contest among the participants. The theme is "bamboo bush." The winner will win the Brooklyn Sling camera bag (http://bit.ly/VS3Ivv) sponsored by +fstop. 六本木の東京ミッドタウンに来ると、このリッツ・カールトン東京の外側にある廊下を撮りたくなります。前回はモノクロで撮ったので今回はカラーに挑戦してみました。

Yotsugi, Central Circular Route 首都高中央環状線（東京・葛飾）
When I went to take photos of Katsushika Harp Bridge during the New Year holidays, the battery for my D800 ran down only after I took two or three photos. So, I had to use the GH2 that I somehow had in my bag (This is one of the photos I took then: http://bit.ly/UyxUv8). I was happy with the result but I wanted to shoot the bridge with my main camera.
So I give it a shot again when Tokyo had a clear sky three weeks later. I shot a lot of similar shots of the "harp" part of the bridge, but I'll share its "belly" this time. It was very dark, but the camera managed to capture the riverbank and the expressway lit dimly by the moon in the sky.
お正月にかつしかハープ橋を撮りに行った。そのとき、あろうことかメインのカメラのバッテリーが到着後すぐにきれてしまった。予備のバッテリーもなし。仕方なく、持っていたもう一台のカメラでその時は過ごした（結果には満足している。これがそのとき撮った写真 http://bit.ly/UyxUv8 ）。

When I went to take photos of Katsushika Harp Bridge during the New Year holidays, the battery for my D800 ran down only after I took two or three photos. So, I had to use the GH2 that I somehow had in my bag (This is one of the photos I took then: http://bit.ly/UyxUv8). I was happy with the result but I wanted to shoot the bridge with my main camera.
So I give it a shot again when Tokyo had a clear sky three weeks later. I shot a lot of similar shots of the "harp" part of the bridge, but I'll share its "belly" this time. It was very dark, but the camera managed to capture the riverbank and the expressway lit dimly by the moon in the sky.
お正月にかつしかハープ橋を撮りに行った。そのとき、あろうことかメインのカメラのバッテリーが到着後すぐにきれてしまった。予備のバッテリーもなし。仕方なく、持っていたもう一台のカメラでその時は過ごした（結果には満足している。これがそのとき撮った写真 http://bit.ly/UyxUv8 ）。

I had never shot a photo in the middle of this intersection in front of Shibuya Station. It was in the late evening. There wasn't enough lights. And I missed to focus on her properly, but I liked the fact that I tried it anyway.

Strolling around Downtown Tokyo (Part 2)
Last Saturday I joined the London Tokyo Photo Club's photowalk in downtown Tokyo. In the previous post (http://bit.ly/Sb4Mop), I shared photos taken in Mukojima area. After that, we are heading east and walked around Kyojima area. After the sun had set, we enjoyed the the warm lights along the shopping streets. Added 23 Photos to the album.

I enjoyed the autumn leaves that day during the lunchtime. When I saw the yellow carpet spreading in front of me, I was so happy and ran on it. And I crushed a lot of ginkgo nuts with my shoes. As you know, the smell of the nuts are "wonderful," so I really didn't want to go back to the office until the "amazing" smell had gone off.
先週、昼休みに近所の公園で紅葉と落葉を楽しんだ時の写真です。黄色のカーペットを見てうれしくなり、葉っぱの上を歩き回った…ところまではよかったのですが、そこには大量の銀杏（ぎんなん）も落ちていて…。あまりに素敵な匂いが靴にベッタリ。仕事に戻りたくなくなったのは言うまでもありません。

The Azalea Festival at Nezu Shrine 根津神社つつじ祭り
I visited Nezu Shrine in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo with +Mark Esguerra and a friend of mine from U.K. The Azalea Festival in its premises had just started and we enjoyed walking on the hill full of pink and white flowers.
友人たちと文京・根津神社を訪れた。ちょうどつつじ祭りが始まったばかりで（知らなかった！）、境内の丘を埋め尽くす白やピンクの花をのんびりと楽しむことができた。

It was just the size of a thumbnail. I had no idea if it was just resting there, or spying at some strange animal staring at it.

This flower is called Yukiyanagi in Japanese, which means Snow Willow (The English name is Thunberg spirea). I love this flower so much, and every year, I was happy to see it bloom along the street near my home.

I met a long time G+ friend, +Mark Esguerra from the US together with other photographers around Tokyo. We walked from Tokyo Station to Tokyo International Forum in Yurakucho, then had some drink and food in Ginza. It was a pleasant night (I was able to take an English shower. It's a good thing for a learner of English as a foreign language, right?). By the way, this shot was taken outside of Tokyo Station right before I met them. I liked the rows of taxis waiting for passengers.
今日はアメリカからやってきたGoogle+の友人を囲むために、フォトグラファー仲間が集いました。東京駅から有楽町の国際フォーラムまで、クリスマスイルミネーションを楽しみながら、騒いで歩いて、飲んで食って。楽しい夜でした。ついでに英語のシャワーを浴び続け、脳がちょっとハイになって…。いや、ハイになったのはビールのせいかもしれませんが。写真は仲間に会う前に撮った１枚。乗客を待つタクシーの列が気に入りました。

337: 12/02/2012: Roppongi Hills 六本木ヒルズ
I didn't have any photo ready at 9 o'clock in the evening. It was raining and I didn't want to go out and take a photo but I had to for my 366 project, so I drove to Roppongi Hills, Minato Ward, Tokyo. Not many people seemed to be hanging around at that time of day especially on a rainy night. but the Christmas illumination was beautiful.
夜の９時過ぎて、雨降りで、写真を取りに行く気分ではなかったのですが、366プロジェクトの写真をまだ撮っていなかったので、六本木ヒルズまで車を走らせ、このスポットから写真を撮って、けやき坂のイルミネーションの中を歩くこともなく帰ってきました。雨の降っていない気分のいい夜に、改めて行ってみたいと思います。

I visited my favorite cherry blossom viewing spot in Suginami, Tokyo. There were only street lamps and the area was no bright enough, so I lit up the cherry blossoms by myself.

I had an appointment with a friend of mine in Shibuya this evening. Before I met her, I visited a bridge over the Shibuya River and checked the position of the moon. We had only 40 or 50 minutes until the moon came up to the right place. We went into a restaurant, grabbed some beer and food quickly, and went to this spot. I was happy with the results, so we went to karaoke and sing songs until late at night.
今日はもともと、渋谷で友人と会う予定があったのですが、どうしても満月を撮りたくなったので、三脚担いで渋谷入り（それも自転車で）。撮影場所として思いついたのは渋谷川でした。渋谷に到着後、早速、月の現在位置を確認したら、いい位置に来るまで４、５０分しかないではないですか！ 友人に無理を言って、居酒屋に駆け込んで急いでビールを飲んでつまみを食べて、そしてまた、この場所に戻って来ました（もちろん友人も引っ張って）。僕は楽しかったですが…友人は…。まあ、楽しかった、ということにしておきます。

Lavender Field
Actually it was not a lavender field. I found them growing in the flowerbed in a park I visited during the photo walk we had in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan last weekend. I touched it and enjoyed its fragrance for a while.
ラベンダー畑……と言いたいところだけれども、これは先週末の横浜写真散歩の途中、港の見える丘公園で見かけたラベンダーの花壇。ラベンダーの葉にさわると、あの独特の香りが指に付いて、しばしクンクン。ひどい雨を忘れることができた。

The name of the town, Ryogoku, reminds many people of sumo, but for me and some of you here on Google+, it relates closely to this expressway junction. I love its curves and how a single column supports two lanes over the Sumida River.
両国という街の名前を聞いて、多くの人は相撲を連想すると思いますが、私やここ、Google+の一部の住人は、この場所を思い出します（連想しますよね？）。私は首都高速両国ジャンクションを、このアングルから見るのが特にお気に入りです。理由はカーブが最もきれいに見えるから。そして、この太い一本の支柱が、隅田川の上を行く二つのレーンを支えている様子を間近に見られるからです。

A Girl in the Sunset
A friend of mine and I visited Daiba Park, Tokyo a couple of weeks ago. We were waiting for the sunset there, when the rain clouds covered the sky. We gave up the idea of shooting the sunset from the park, and started walking toward the shopping area where we thought we would wait until the sky cleared up. But we were caught in the rain on the way. We had to take shelter under the eaves of the public facilities on the beach ... It was not the perfect place to hide. But we soon realized we were at the perfect spot, because we were able to see the sun setting right behind the Rainbow Bridge. It was a breathtaking view.
先日、夕日の写真を撮ろうと思い、友人と台場公園に行った。そこは周囲が海で、木しかない公園。準備万端。さあ、夕焼けを待とう。そう思った矢先に雨雲が近づいてきた。そこから夕焼けを撮ることはあきらめ、台場海浜公園の方向に歩き始めると、途中で激しい雨が降ってきた。仕方なく、近くにあった公共施設のひさしで雨宿り。でも、そこで雨宿りをしてよかった。直後にこんな夕景を見ることができたのだから。

I knew the Christmas tree was ready through a photo from a friend of mine. The tree looked more beautiful than before but I was not sure. Have you noticed a giant statue on the left? I always like to see how "he" is looking up at the star on the tree.

I walked up to the middle of the crossing, took photos, went back to the sidewalk, blew off the raindrops on the lens, wait for the next green light, and again walked up to the middle ... I did this more than 5 times in the falling rain to get this ...
横断歩道の真ん中まで歩いて、写真を撮って、歩道に戻って、レンズに付いた水滴を吹き飛ばして、信号が次に青になるのを待って、また横断歩道の真ん中まで歩いて…。雨の中、５回以上繰り返しました。

A View of Tokyo at Dusk from Bunkyo Civic Center 文京シビックセンター
I visited the observatory of Bunkyo Civic Center with G+ friends a while ago. I saw the skyscrapers in Shinjuku, Mt. Fuji, Tokyo Skytree, etc., but this view was my favorite. I loved the contrast between the orange lights from the streets and the blue roofs of the buildings. I visited the observatory of Bunkyo Civic Center with G+ friends a while ago. I saw the skyscrapers in Shinjuku, Mt. Fuji, Tokyo Skytree, etc., but this view was my favorite. I loved the contrast between the orange lights from the streets and the blue roofs of the buildings. The weather was not good all day, so I didn't expect to see the sunset. When I noticed the buildings outside the office window were illuminated by the orange sunset light, I hurried out to the balcony and captured this.

I failed to capture a totally un-Christmassy shot that I wanted to add to my 366 project album this evening, so I'll add this very Christmassy image instead taken in Shinjuku before I took the train home.

We had a photo walk in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan this weekend. Because of the heavy rain, it was very hard to take pictures (we had to protect our cameras, you know). Still, I was so happy to meet more than 50 Google+ photographers! We will have to visit the city on a fine day again soon.

Do you see a temple at the foot of Tokyo Tower? It's Zojoji Temple in Minato-ku, Tokyo. We dropped by that temple during the Googe+ First Anniversary Photo Walk last year. This is the last spot we visited during the factory photo drive earlier this month hosted by +masanobu tanzawa. The factory was beyond the tall fence, but I wanted to capture something other than that. So I decided to sneak under the steel tower on the other side of the street, and had this result. What do you think?
今月初めの「工場フォトドライブ」で訪れた浮島の工場は、背の高いフェンスの向こうにあった。どうせ背の高いフェンス越しに撮るのならと思い、道路の反対側にあったさらに背の高い鉄塔の下に入って、こんな感じの視点で眺めてみた。

Before +Mark Esguerra goes back to the US, he, +Jason Arney and I went to shoot the loop part of Rainbow Bridge, Minato Ward, Tokyo. Later, +Brian Kemper joined us and we had another fun night out. By the way, this was the first visit to this spot with my present camera, so I shot some angles that I had tried before to see the difference.
アメリカから来た友人が帰国する前に、大好きなこの場所に一緒に行くことにしました。最高の空ではなかったですが、喜んでくれたようでよかったです。私は、今、使っているカメラでこの場所に来るのが初めてだったので、いつもと同じようなショットを撮っては、違いを確認して楽しみました。

Some streets in Tokyo has already been illuminated for Christmas. This is Naka Street in Marunouchi, Tokyo. I had a chance to visit this street after a meeting tonight. It was well past nine in the evening, so only a few people were around there. I was able to shoot in the middle of the street as long as I want.

I met those capybaras two years ago. I fell in love with them instantly. I really liked their calm and friendly attitude. Since then, I had wanted to see them again, but last week, that wish came true finally. I found out they moved to a different cage that everyone was able to walk in. So, I wanted to play with them for a while, but you see, they were apparently enjoying the warm afternoon sunlight.
本物のカピバラの見て、愛嬌のあるたたずまいを大好きになったのが２年前。同じ動物園でももう一度彼らに会いたい。そんな願いが先週、やっとかないました。彼らは誰でも入れるおりに移動していたので、喜んで中に入り一緒に遊ぼう…と思ったのですが、昼寝の真っ最中でした。そんなわけでカビバラの #すれすれ に挑戦。

I visited Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura. In its premises there is Shojoken Observatory which offers a great view of Mt. Fuji. I needed to go up the steep stairs and was out of breath when I reaced the top. Sadly, the highest mountain in Japan was behind the clouds, but I was able to see some nice clouds, and a good view of the central part of Kamakura City and Izu Islands in the far distance.
鎌倉・建長寺の敷地内にある勝上嶽展望台に行った。汗をかいて息を切らして険しい階段を上ったが、残念ながら富士山は雲の向こう。それでも鎌倉市内や太平洋に浮かぶ伊豆諸島までを見ることができた。今度は晴れた午前中に来て、ぜひともここからの富士山の眺めを楽しみたい。

This is the place where she entered the expressway. Do you want to follow her and see the world where two moons are in the sky?

I visited one of my favorite parks to see the autumn leaves this morning. The park used to be a private garden which is now owned by Suginami Ward government and is open to public. A small river runs through the garden and you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves every year.
今日の午前中、杉並区の大田黒公園に行ってきました。もとは個人の邸宅だった庭を杉並区が整備して一般公開している公園です。川が流れて池もある日本庭園があって、毎年、きれいな紅葉が楽しめ、私のお気に入りの場所の一つです。

I visited one of my favorite parks to see the autumn leaves this morning. The park used to be a private garden which is now owned by Suginami Ward government and is open to public. A small river runs through the garden and you can enjoy beautiful autumn leaves every year.

A Boat on the Sumida River

Under the quarter moon, the boat ran along the Sumida River. I was thrilled with the perfect shutter speed and timing. By the way, the Ryogoku junction of Metropolitan Expressway is one of my most favorite spots in Tokyo. When I was a kid, my parents often drove passed there. By going right at the fork, we were visiting my grandmother's older sister. Going left, the destination was a town near Asakusa, where the high school my father used to work at was located.
この日の夜は雲ひとつなく、上弦の月が夜空を照らしていました。夜は家でのんびりするつもりでしたが、結局、じっとしていることができずに車を走らせました。これはワンショット。シャッターを切ったタイミング、スピードがちょうどよく、隅田川を進む船がいい具合に写ってくれました。
ところでこの両国ジャンクションは、私のお気に入りのスポットの一つです。子供のころ、親に車に乗せられてよくここを走りました。Y字の分かれ道を千葉方面に進むと親戚のおばあちゃんの家に行き、向島方面に進むと父が働いていた高校が目的地でした。懐かしい。

Full Bloom
The eight-fold cherry blossoms in my neighborhood were in full bloom last weekend. They always remind me of a Japanese confectionery called Sakura-mochi (The images are here: http://bit.ly/ZsCoag).
この週末、世田谷・桜新町の八重桜が満開になった。毎週日曜日はこの近くに行く用事があるので、その帰りに撮影。八重桜を見るたびに、桜餅が食べたくなる。

The Moon and The Loop
When +Mark Esguerra visited Tokyo last November, I took him to this spot with +Jason Arney and +Brian Kemper. The sky was not perfect, but still, the moon had added the wonderful touch to the bridge.
昨年11月にアメリカから友人が来たとき、この場所で一緒に撮影をした。誰が来ても、最初に連れて行きたいと思うお気に入りの場所。アルバムには同じような写真が何枚も入っているけれど、一人で悦に入ってもいいではないか！ということで。

公園のベンチに座っていたら感じた視線…。振り返ってみると、そこにいたのはトンボ。かすかな笑みを浮かべていました。

The Setting Sun in the Middle
When I reached this spot, the setting sun was just there. I hurriedly set my camera and tripod and capture this view. I'm glad I didn't miss the timing.
東京江戸川区の葛西臨海公園から、荒川沿いをせっせと北に歩いて、西葛西駅近くのこの場所にたどり着いたら、ちょうど太陽がこの位置に。あわてて三脚とカメラをセットして撮影。逃さなくてよかった。
