Beautiful portraits by HARDING MEYER

Brazilian-born artist Harding Meyer lives and works in Berlin and Karlsruhe where he paints these stunning, large-scale oil portraits. I imagine nothing short of standing in front of these giant canvases truly does them justice, but you can see them in extremely high resolution over on Meyer’s blog.

Virgin and Child Surrounded by Angels

When I saw this painting on the internet I had no idea how old it was. And I certainly would not have guest it was from 1453-54! I think it's an amazing painting!

It is a painting by Jean Fouquet. Jean (or Jehan) Fouquet (1420–1481) was a preeminent French painter of the 15th century, a master of both panel painting and manuscript illumination, and the apparent inventor of the portrait miniature. He was the first French artist to travel to Italy and experience first-hand the early Italian Renaissance.

The picture is actually a portrait of Agnès Sorel (1421–1450), a favorite mistress of King Charles VII of France, to whom she bore three daughters. She was apparently an extraordinarily beautiful young woman, of high intelligence, and it is said that her presence at his court brought the king out of a protracted depression. She was known as la Dame de Beauté.

The painting can be seen in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp

    National Beard and Mustache Championships

There are some weird man walking this earth. In this case they are hairy man. And the entered the fourth annual Just For Men National Beard and Moustache Championships® organized by Beard Team USA® took place on September 7, 2013 in New Orleans.

More than 150 contestants from the U.S., U.K. and Canada competed in 17 categories (winners list here and here).
Greg Anderson, a commercial photographer based in Las Vegas, was the official event photographer and he has uploaded an astounding 165-picture photo gallery on his Facebook page.
Greg tells PetaPixel that he used a Mamiya 645DF with a Schneider 80mm LS lens and Leaf Aptus ii 7 digital back. He says the images were mostly shot at ISO 100 f7.1 at 1/250th of second and that the 5 light setup was all Dynalite strobe.

Greg’s portraits were so well received he’s already been asked to come back to next year’s event as the official photographer. Greg also plans on making a short picture book out of some of his favourite portraits. Be sure to check out his website and Facebook page to keep up with the latest.

    Paintings by Frederic Leighton

Romantic dreamy paintings with scenes from Greek mythology and women with beautiful pleated dresses and robes. Female faces with sharp features, yet very soft by Frederic Leighton.

    About Frederic Leighton (1830–1896):
English painter, draughtsman, and occasional sculptor, one of the dominant figures of late Victorian art. He travelled widely in Europe as a boy and his artistic education was gained principally in Frankfurt, Rome, and Paris. It was not until 1859 that he settled in England, but he had earlier made his name with Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna is Carried in Procession through the Streets of Florence, which he painted in Rome: it was exhibited at the 1855 Royal Academy exhibition and bought by Queen Victoria (it is now on loan from the Royal Collection to the National Gallery, London). In spite of this success, Leighton was for several years regarded as an alien presence in the British art world, but from the mid-1860s he enjoyed a level of worldly success that was matched perhaps only by Millais, his almost exact contemporary: he became president of the Royal Academy in 1878, was made a baronet in 1886, and a few days before he died was raised to the peerage, the first (and so far only) British artist to be so honoured.

Spring Week 3: Last year's Spring

Posting an album with photos I made in the first two weeks of April in 2012. Last year Spring was all around than. Flowers were blooming, blossoms verywhere. At this moment it still is freezing cold. Outside you see nothing that proves Spring has begun. I guess we'l have to be patient a little longer.

We'll have to make Spring come alive on Google Plus! I'm doing my part by posting this album with photos I made with my Samsung Nexus S. So it is #androidphotography   #mobilephotography

Finland week 5.: Beautiful colorful illustrations by Sanna Annukka

    Sanna Annukka:
Sanna Annukka is a designer and printmaker. Her distinctive style of bold colour and pattern is influenced by her childhood summers spent in northern Finland.

Her memories of camping in the nightless Lapland wilderness, the forests, lakes and wildlife remain a constant inspiration.

In 2008 Sanna became a designer for Marimekko. Her first collection was a celebration of The Kalevala, Finland's national literary epic. This was very appropriate as the Kalevala originates from Karelia where Sanna's grandmother was born.

Sanna's second collection, due to hit the stores Autumn/Winter 2012, reflects the landscapes, architecture and culture of Finland.

Sanna now divides her time between screen-printing at her studio and designing and expanding her product range.

A little bit of romance: Anton Pieck's Christmas spirit

Last Christmas I posted Pieck too. And still I haven't visited the Anton Pieck Museum. Posting winter and Christmas illustrations by Pieck.

    About Anton Piek
Anton Franciscus Pieck (Den Helder, Netherlands, 19 April 1895 – Overveen, Netherlands, 24 November 1987), a Dutch painter, artist and graphic artist. His works are noted for their nostalgic or fairy tale-like character and are widely popular, appearing regularly on cards and calendars. His work has also been used for Christmas cards.
From 1952 to 1974, Pieck was responsible for designing almost everything for fairytale park Efteling in Kaatsheuvel, which has become one of the most important theme parks in Europe. His work for Efteling has been of huge importance for the future of the park, since almost all later designers used many of his graphic characteristics in their designs (such as materials, colors and shapes).
In 1984 the Anton Pieck Museum was opened at the Achterstraat in Hattem, Netherlands. The museum is called "Huis voor Anton Pieck" (literally, "The House for Anton Pieck"). (Wikipedia)

Hattem is only about 20 km from where I live and I haven't been there.

    Christmas creativity

Yesterday I excused my self, for not posting on Google plus. I was busy decorating for Christmas. I promised photos. Here they are. What is in the album?

    - My tree with handmade decorations. I made them about 18-20 years ago. Back than, I had small children and cats. These are made of Styrofoam, decorated with fabric, ribbons and glitter / sequins. They are unbreakable.

    - Than you see several table and door pieces I made yesterday for my own home and my mums home.

    - And lastly you see the wishing cards I made and posted today for my friends and family.

Hope you'll like them. Its all back to the classic colors. My Christmas decorations have been in cool colors en modern the last 15 years. This year I'm back to warm, classic and romantic.

Woman's head by an ancient master! Leonardo da Vinci

I'm amased by everything this incredible man did and made. I'm curious to know what and how he would be if he had been born in for example 1963. He was a super talented man and a super intelligent man. Who would he be, had he been born in our times?

Positing faces and studies by Leonardo. Showing his talent of painting/drawing sheer beauty in a simple, but incredible way.

    Leonardo da Vinci
Italian painter, sculptor, architect, author, engineer, inventor, lutanist, mathematician & scientist born April 15 1452- died 1519

Leonardo da Vinci was a Florentine artist, one of the great masters of the High Renaissance, who was also celebrated as a painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and scientist. His profound love of knowledge and research was the keynote of both his artistic and scientific endeavors. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Italian art for more than a century after his death, and his scientific studies - particularly in the fields of anatomy, optics, and hydraulics - anticipated many of the developments of modern science.

    Than it says:

Did I? I have no idea what I did. I do understand that when my blogs or Google plus account show up as a search result, my name and face are visible as the author, but..

My computer is on life support now. A PSU that doesn't fit in my computer casing. It works for now. Tonight we'll build everything in a different casing.

Japan week 5: 19th century photography by Kimbei Kusakabe

Posting an album with 19the century colored photos: mainly between 1860 and 1900. Amazing photos by Kimbei Kusakabe.

Kusakabe Kimbei (日下部 金兵衛) (1841 - 1934) was a Japanese photographer. He usually went by his given name, Kimbei, because his clientele, mostly non-Japanese-speaking foreign residents and visitors, found it easier to pronounce than his family name. Kusakabe Kimbei worked with Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried as a photographic colourist and assistant before opening his own workshop in Yokohama in 1881 in the Benten-dōri quarter, and from 1889 operating in the Honmachi quarter. He also opened a branch in the Ginza quarter of Tokyo. He stopped working as a photographer in 1912-1913.
Most of his albums are mounted in accordion fashion. (Wikipedia)

    Colorful paintings by Julia Pappas

It was a rainy day again. Grey, cloudy, time for some color!

Julia Pappas is a contemporary artist in Dallas, TX. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University, and has experience teaching art to students of all ages. Color in her work is energetic and emotional. Fascinated with figure and face, the layers of color in her work are representative of the many depths and layers - both physical and emotional - of each portrait subject. In creating larger-than-life colorful paintings, it is her goal to provide the viewer with a portrait that is an exciting, visually pleasing piece full of energy, depth, and power... the very power to which Wassily Kandinsky speaks in his quote: 'Color is a power which directly influences the soul.'

Mother goose and her 3 children....
A photo I made today. There were several families in the ponds behind our school. There is only one white goose. Her "husband" is a greylag Goose. He wasn't around. I don't think that is a good sign. He's probably dead. Mum was doing a good job on her own.

Tran Nguyen is a Georgia-based artist. Born in Vietnam and raised in the States, she received a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2009. She is fascinated with creating visuals that can be used as a psycho-therapeutic support vehicle, treading the mind’s surreal dreamscape. Her paintings are created with a delicate quality using color pencil and thin glazes of acrylic on paper. Tran’s oeuvre has been exhibited with galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, and Barcelona.

South Africa week 3.: Amazing  wildlife art by Johan Hoekstra

When I see art like this I always think: If I could draw half as good as this artist, I'd be real proud of myself :-) Beautiful art!

    About Johan Hoekstra:
Since childhood, Johan Hoekstra has been passionate about drawing animals, birds and the South African landscape. Throughout his life has been taking trips to the bush at every opportunity; observing, sketching and photographing wildlife – both fauna and flora.

After studying architecture and graphic design, Johan embarked on a distinguished career in advertising, winning a host of international and local awards. Tiring of the grueling life in big business, he created his own design studio, specialising in design consulting, book design and illustration. Commissions for his paintings started coming in from the late 1980’s and this pointed to a whole new career. Since then Johan has amassed a truly impressive collection of works.

Johan Hoekstra is noted for his fidelity to nature and his phenomenal sense of observation, through which he can express, with startling accuracy, the character and body language of any bird or animal. His paintings hang in corporate and private collections in Southern Africa, the Middle and Far East, Australia, the USA, the UK and Europe. His works have been auctioned in Christies prestigious wildlife art department and today he mostly paints commissions for discerning collectors.

Rainy Day 4: National Geographic Photography Contest Winner: 2011

Grand Prize Winner and Nature Winner - SPLASHING: This photo was taken when Shikhei Goh was taking photos of other insects, as he normally did during macro photo hunting. He wasn’t actually aware of this dragonfly since he was occupied with other objects. When he was about to take a picture of it, it suddenly rained, but the lighting was just superb. He decided to take the shot regardless of the rain. The result caused him to be overjoyed, and he hopes it pleases viewers. Batam, Riau Islands, Indonesia

Test for black space around photos

When I saw the black space around the photos in Google pluses new layout, I thought is was a boring black block. Today, working on a different pc I noticed a "shadow" of the photo shines through the black space. Hmmmmm, not bad!

    Have you noticed it too?

    Google+ Statistics

This what http://socialstatistics.com/ says they do:
Google+ Statistics currently tracks and generates detailed statistics for 50,599 users and pulls in hundreds of the most popular posts, every second of the day, from Google+. Add yourself (see sidebar) so we can start tracking your personal Google+ statistics too. You will be able to see how many people added you to their circles, how you grow over time and where you rank in the list of popular Google+ users.

A few minutes ago I signed in. The image shows my awesome growth of the amount of people who circled me last week. It's complete nonsens, but it looks great.
    A ones in a Google+ lifetime moment :-)

    This is why:

We depend on Google+ for our statistics and can only get the numbers they give us. Right now Google+ isn't refreshing their pages very often as they try to keep up with high demand. The other problem is that some people close off their accounts and hide their counts.

I'm just going to enjoy this brief moment of popularity :-)

Ik wens iedereen een stralend en kleurrijk weekend! - I wish everyone a radiant and colorful weekend!

Deze foto maakte ik vandaag op de school waar ik werk. Een leerling liet met een flitsende lasershow zien wat hij tijdens zijn stage had geleerd. Een indrukwekkende show in een van de sportzalen!

This picture I made today at the school where I work. A student showed with a dazzling laser show what he had learned during his internship. An impressive show at one of the gyms!

4000 Pieces of Metal In a 10 ft, 550 pound Lion Sculpture

Turkish artist Selcuk Yilmaz created this unbelievable lion sculpture from 4,000 pieces of hammered metal. Entitled Aslan, the sculpture took the artist 10 months to complete and weighs approximately 250 kg (551 pounds). The sculpture measures 330 cm long by 185 cm tall (10.8 ft x 6.06 ft)
Every piece of metal used was hand cut and hammered by the artist. The detail in the close-up images below really demonstrate how incredible this sculpture is.

    Reshared text:
A State of Gracie: Happy at Last

Over a year and a half ago, visitors at the L.A. Zoo were shocked to witness the mauling of Gracie's new baby by an angry male chimp. This event caused even greater sadness because it was the first baby born to the zoo in over thirteen years. Since that time, Gracie has given birth to a new, more protected, baby. I was fortunate to have caught them in a contented moment (inspired in my processing by +Alan Shapiro and his exquisite primate images.)

In fact, there are three new babies now at the zoo; all well, happy and cavorting about during my visit a month ago. The mothers will nurse their babies for up to 5 years and a chimpanzee does not reach adulthood until the age of 13.

"The Los Angeles Zoo is home to one of the largest chimpanzee troops of any zoo in the country. Built in 1998, the Zoo's Chimpanzees of the Mahale Mountains habitat has been hailed by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall as one of the country’s finest chimpanzee habitats. Maintaining a healthy, diverse zoo population of chimpanzees is crucial to the survival of the species. Unfortunately, chimpanzees are currently on the endangered species list. Populations have decreased because of foresting, hunting, commercial exportation, and collection for scientific research. Although chimpanzees are protected in 34 national parks and reserves, laws can be difficult to enforce in remote regions." (source: lazoo.org)

"Millions of chimpanzees used to live throughout equatorial Africa from southern Senegal through Central Africa to western Tanzania. Today, there are estimated to be merely 170,000-300,000 chimpanzees left in Africa, and their population is decreasing rapidly. One recent census in the Ivory Coast revealed that the chimp population there had decreased 90% in just the past twenty years." (source: savethechimps.org)

We share over 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees, which makes them our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. Chimps have 32 teeth and the same standard body temperature as humans, 98.6º. We share similar senses of sight, hearing and taste, as well as facial expressions that reveal analogous emotions of anger, joy, grief, boredom and the faculty to comfort each other with kisses and hugs.

For the above reason, I am very glad that six months ago, "the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed adding captive chimpanzees to the endangered species list, which would severely limit how the animals could be used in medical research. Although wild chimpanzees were added to the list in 1990, captive chimpanzees were not given the same protection. Adding captive chimpanzees would mean protecting another 1,884 animals in the U.S., including many currently being used in medical research. If the animals are added to the endangered species list, laboratories will have to obtain a special permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to use the animals for any testing that could "harm or harass" the animal." (source: abcnews.go.com)

While species endangerment has been a natural occurrence throughout history, I am grateful that humans are willing to take some responsibility for human-initiated endangerment. As I, for one, want my children's children to have the opportunity to encounter these remarkable creatures.

Sculptures Made from Old Watch Parts by Susan Beatrice

Using the smallest components from repurposed antique pocket watches and other time pieces, New-Jersey based artist Susan Beatrice of All Natural Arts assembles these whimsical sculptures of animals and human figures. Her work has an unmistakeable steampunk appeal, merging an 18th aesthetic with fairytale themes to create these one-of-a-kind works of art. The amount of time and thought put into these pieces is truly inspiring, daring the viewer to dream outside the clockwork box we modern folk often find ourselves in.

Beautiful paintings of children from all over the world by Michael Maczuga

Michael Maczuga considers himself a native Arizonan. Although born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1957, he and his family moved here in 1964.
Michael paints daily wherever and whenever time allows. He became a member of the Oil Painters of America in 2004. He is also the founding director of the one and only major plein aire painters show in Scottsdale, “The Wild Wild West Show,” an invitational and juried show. Scotland week 4.: Wish tree

Wikipedia: A wish tree is an individual tree, usually distinguished by species, position or appearance, which is used as an object of wishes and offerings. Such trees are identified as possessing a special religious or spiritual value. By tradition, believers make votive offerings in order to gain from that nature spirit, saint or goddess fulfillment of a wish.

One form of votive offering is the token offering of a coin. The remains of one such tree can be found near Ardmaddy House in Argyll, Scotland, a hawthorn, which is a species traditionally linked with fertility. The trunk and branches are covered with hundreds of coins which have been driven through the bark and into the wood. The local tradition is that a wish will be granted for each of the coins so treated.
In the glen of the Aira Beck near Aira Force is a wish tree formed from a large fallen tree trunk into which the many visitors hammer coins using stones from nearby.
On Isle Maree in Loch Maree, Gairloch, in the Highlands is an oak wish tree made famous by a visit in 1877 by Queen Victoria mentioned in her published diaries. The tree, and others surrounding it, are festooned with hammered-in coins. It is near the healing well of St. Maree, to which votive offerings were made, including the sacrifice of bulls, which continued up to the 18th century, according to records.
Near Mountrath, County Laois, is a shapeless old wish tree in the form of a sycamore tree called St. Fintan's Well. The original well was filled in, but the water re-appeared in the centre of the tree. Hundreds of Irish pennies have been beaten into the bark as good luck offerings.
The High Force Waterfall has a coin wish tree in the grounds of the waterfall.
Many public houses, such as the Punch Bowl in Askham, near Penrith in Cumbria, have old beams with splits in them into which coins are forced for luck.

Scotland week 2.: Contemporary wildlife art by Paul Bartlett

Paul Bartlett is a scientist turned artist who has been creating wildlife art professionally since the completion of his PhD in animal
behaviour in 2002. He has always had a passion for nature and has drawn wildlife since he could hold a pencil.

He is an elected member of the Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and won "Artist of the Year" in 2006 at their annual exhibition
at London's Mall Galleries. He has twice been a category winner and overall runner-up in the prestigious David Shepherd "Wildlife
Artist of the Year" competition in 2009 and 2010 and a category winner for the "BBC Wildlife Magazine Artist of the Year" in
2009. His work has featured in numerous art publications and books.

Variety and experimentation are the main emphases of Paul's approach to his art. He seeks to continually strive to find innovative
techniques and styles in which to depict his subjects whilst retaining an element of authenticity. In 2003 he developed a unique approach
to painting watercolours whereby the surface of the paper is ripped to achieve texture and tonal contrast. More recently it is his collage
and mixed media works for which he is best known and which have gained him critical acclaim and awards.

Paul's unique eye-catching style is the cumulative result of all his experimentation with technique and mediums over his artistic career.
Often combining collage with acrylics or pastels, he uses pertinent publications for his works, adding an extra facet to the painting by
sourcing articles which relate to the subject. He recently spent a year in France where, free from the commitments of exhibitions and
commissions, Paul was able to experiment with new directions for his collage work. During this time he developed the use of papier
maché in his work to create highly textural semi-sculptural pieces, something which he sees as bridging a gap between collage and
    sculpture.

As an artist and lover of nature Paul seeks the more remote wildernesses for his inspiration from Scotland to the Himalayas and
Australia to Africa. In search of subject matter he often spends days trekking alone on foot or paddling his sea kayak to visit
inaccessible coast or islands where wildlife abounds.

Painting for a living allows Paul the time and opportunity to enjoy his passion for nature and the outdoors. His other pastimes include
climbing mountains and kayaking. He lives nearTayport, Fife, with his partner and their three children.

Belgium week 3.: Pieter Brueghel the Elder - Netherlandish Proverbs (1559)

If you have followed me for a bit longer, then you probably know that I am not a big fan of classic paintings, but there are exceptions, such as the work of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. He has painted fun and amazing detailed paintings! His work tells stories, lots of stories like this: The painting depicts proverbs and sayings. Over a hundred in this painting. Nowadays we recognize more than a hundred, but it's possible that Brueghel painted sayings that we no longer know/use.

In this album you'll find the painting and 7 examples. If you zoom in on the High resolution painting (link) you can have a look at the amazing details and look for more. Under this text you'll find links a Dutch and and an English Wikipedia page with many more examples.

Link to High resolution photo: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IkB-XD2qooc/UB6RP67fyfI/AAAAAAAAhA8/phxqq62Jcu8/s787/netherlandish-proverbs-1559.jpg

    About Pieter Brueghel the Elder:
Pieter Brueghel the Elder (c. 1525 – 9 September 1569) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (so called genre painting). He is sometimes referred to as the "Peasant Brueghel" to distinguish him from other members of the Brueghel dynasty, but he is also the one generally meant when the context does not make clear which Brueghel is being referred to. From 1559 he dropped the 'h' from his name and signed his paintings as Brueghel.
According to some sources he was born in Breugel near the (now Dutch) town of Breda. There are however also records that he was born in Breda, and there is some uncertainty whether the (now Belgian) town of Bree, called Breda in Latin, is meant. He was an apprentice of Pieter Coecke van Aelst, whose daughter Mayken he later married. He spent some time in France and Italy, and then went to Antwerp, where in 1551 he was accepted as a master in the painter's guild. He traveled to Italy soon after, and then returned to Antwerp before settling in Brussels permanently 10 years later.
He received the nickname 'Peasant Brueghel' or 'Brueghel the Peasant' for his alleged practice of dressing up like a peasant in order to mingle at weddings and other celebrations, thereby gaining inspiration and authentic details for his genre paintings. He died in Brussels on 9 September 1569 and was buried in the Kapellekerk. He was the father of Pieter Brueghel the Younger and Jan Brueghel the Elder. Both became painters, but as they were very young children when their father died, it is believed neither received any training from him. According to Carel van Mander, it is likely that they were instructed by their grandmother Mayken Verhulst van Aelst, who was also an artist.

Art Deco week 2: Classic Art Deco Posters by Cassandre

About Cassandre: Cassandre (1901-1968) was one of the great poster designers of the 20th century. His real name was Adolphe Mouron. Born in the Ukraine in 1901, his family were forced to migrate to Paris due to the hostile political climate. He originally studied painting at the Écoles des Beaux Arts in Paris but, at the age of 22, he started designing posters under the name Cassandre. Cassandre's style is typically Art Deco and his posters have become iconic images of that period (mid 1920’s to mid 1930’s).

About Art Deco: The name, Art Deco, was coined retrospectively in the 1960’s as an abbreviation for the ‘Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes’, a 1925 design exhibition in Paris that celebrated modern living. Art Deco was a fusion of various early 20th century styles: a combination of Art Nouveau’s stylised curves with the geometric abstraction of Cubism, Futurism and Constructivism (a Russian form of abstract art).

Art Deco also borrowed ideas from historical and ethnic sources such as the art of ancient Rome and Greece, Aztec, African and Egyptian art. The artifacts and treasures discovered in Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 had a strong influence on the Art Deco style. Art Deco objects often use unexpected combinations of materials like snakeskin, leather, marble, hardwoods, steel, alluminium, bronze, plastic, ivory, glass and crystal. The iconic Art Deco design comprises zigzag and streamlined forms in combination with formal geometric shapes. The designs always place the decorative style of an object before its functional qualities.

WO II Week - 6: Forgotten victims of World War II: Roma and Sinti (gypsys)

A girl looks with big frightened eyes out of a freight wagon. It is a picture from the movie Rudolf Breslauer made in 1944 in Westerbork. The photo was for decades an icon of the persecution of Jews in the Netherlands. In December 1994, journalist Aad Wagenaar discovered that the unknown girl wasn't a Jewish girl.

Settela Steinbach (Buchten, 23 December 1934 – Auschwitz, August 1944) was a gypsy girl from South Limburg. With her mother and five siblings they were gassed in Auschwitz.

    Settelas' story:
On 16 May 1944 the Nazis held a raid against Roma and Sinti in the Netherlands. Settela was arrested in Eindhoven. That same day she arrived with another 577 others in Westerbork, of whom more than 300 soon could leave because they were caravan dwellers, but not Roma. In Westerbork Settela was preventive shaved against lice. Because she was ashamed of her bald head her mother tore a piece of cloth that she could put on her head.

    The train:
On May 19 she was transported by train to Auschwitz-Birkenau camps with 244 other Sinti. When the doors of the boxcar in which they would be transported were closed, she looked a little outside to a dog that walked there. This image was captured by Rudolf Breslauer, a Jewish prisoner in Westerbork, commissioned by the camp commander Gemmeker made a film about the camp.

    Auschwitz:
On May 21 the Dutch Sinti arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau. They were recorded and were brought to the department for Roma. Then in the summer of 1944 a half million Jews from Hungary were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, in the camp there was lack of space. Among the Roma a revolt broke out, which, however, was betrayed. Roma who still were deemed fit to work were transferred to munitions factories in Germany. In the period from late July to 3 August, the remaining three thousand were gassed, 213 Dutch Sinti. Settela and her mother, two brothers, two sisters, her aunt, two cousins and a niece were also among this group, so the date of her death is not definitely fixed. Of the family only the father survived World War II. He died of grief in 1946 and buried in Maastricht.

    History/background:
The nazis tried to exterminate the Sinti and Roma (gypsies). Already before the war, German and Austrian Sinti and Roma were arrested - under pretence of fighting criminality - and deported to Dachau and Buchenwald. From the mid 1930s, men, women, and children were forced to undergo sterilisation. Once the war began, Sinti and Roma in Eastern Europe became victims of large scale executions carried out by the Einsatzgruppen. From all over Europe they were deported to extermination camps. In Auschwitz the notorious camp doctor, Dr. Josef Mengele used Sinti and Roma children for his cruel medical experiments.

Until today it is hard ascertain how many Sinti and Roma were murdered during the war: estimates vary from 100,000 to several hundred thousands. On 16 May, 1944, Sinti and Roma were rounded up everywhere in the Netherlands and deported to Westerbork. Three days later a train with 245 Sinti and Roma left for Auschwitz. After the war only 30 returned. Also, after the war, the persecution of Sinti and Roma was much less discussed and written about than the persecution of Jews.

    TotalEngages - EngagedSpread% - EngagedDepth%

Circle count has a new button under "Popular". The statistics are:

    TotalEngages: (#Reshares + #Comments + #+1's)
    ~how many total interactions

    EngagedSpread%: (#Reshares + #Comments + #+1's) / #Followers
    ~how broadly engaged are followers

    EngagedDepth%: ((#Reshares * 3) + (#Comments * 2) + #+1's) / #Followers
    ~how deeply engaged are followers

When I take all Dutch users who entered Circle count you get the result shown in the screenshot below. The 1 and 2 on the left each have less than 10 followers and follow less then 10 people.
Question: how engaged are you with circles like that?

    Conclusion: These statistics are nonsense!

    Amazing drawings by Morteza Katouzian

Morteza Katouzian was born on July 3, 1943 in a middle-class, art-loving family. He loved painting since childhood and he spent all his time on learning this art without any teacher. In 1960 he started graphics and painting work professionally. In graphics, he had created several posters, logos, book covers and brochures. In 1974, he accepted the responsibility of holding Tehran International Graphics Exhibition named “African Starvelings” sponsored by I.A.A. international organization, and he performed the task in a reputable way and Swon the prize of “Poster of Integration”. He was one of the founders of Graphic Artists’ syndicate in the years before the revolution and he was its head of the board for 2 years.

During the past years, he has attended several collective exhibitions and held 4 solo exhibitions. All of them were “The Most Visited” exhibitions in the history of art in Iran due to the high quality of exhibited works and the affectionate look at humans and issues related to their lives which were presented in these paintings. As an example, according to the official statistics the exhibition of his works at Museum of Contemporary Arts in 1979 had 20,000 visitors. In his last exhibition in June 2008 which was held by 94 works at Saad-Abad Cultural-Historical Complex, on Wednesday June 18, 2008 in a magnificent ceremony, he was awarded UNESCO’s citation in respect of his 50 years of activities in the field of painting and his 30 years of unfeigned teaching to Iranian youth.

A little bit of romance: Anton Pieck's Christmas spirit

Nubrella is the 21st century umbrella

It is handsfree and the aerodynamic design blocks the wind and rain. The umbrella was invented some 3000 years ago and has seen no evolution. We continue to rely on the umbrella for protection against all inclement weather conditions until now. Let nubrella be your new item in your arsenal of weather protection gear and “stay outdoors”!

I think this could be a great design. (Watch the video to see how it works.) The hands free part is great. A lot safer than riding your bike with a traditional umbrella. This would also solve a problem for my 84 year old mother. She walks with a walker. Needs both hands for that, so she can't carry an umbrella. So she stays home when its raining. With a Nubrella she could easily go out if the wind isn't to strong.

Toen ik gisteren het weerbericht voor vandaag hoorde, dacht ik: Oh nee, niet weer. Het werd weer een grijze regenachtige dag. Genoeg!

Daarom ging ik vandaag naar de Orchideeënhoeve. Een plek van kleur en warmte. Bloemen, vlinders en .... regenboog lories!

When  yesterday I heard the weather forecast for today, I thought: Oh no not again! Not again rain. It would be another gray rainy day. Again no taking photos outside. * It is enough *

That's why I went to the Orchid Farm today. A place of warmth and color. Flowers, butterflies and .... rainbow lorikeets!

    Lovely paintings by Andrei Protsouk

The artist Andrei Protsouk, whose gallery is at 7 N. Sixth St., Stroudsburg, paints in a contemporary figurative style. Sometimes using remnants from the original paints he brought with him from the Soviet Union in 1990, his depictions often feature subjects engaged in intimacies. One large painting, displayed on the wall above his desk, shows a man in a fedora kissing a bare-shouldered woman in a red dress.

"Basically, it's all about love," Protsouk said while looking at the woman in red, his English spoken with a Ukrainian accent. "All my paintings."

His ideas, his inspiration, his brushes, canvases and paints are important tools, but Protsouk's computer allows him to show his works to potential customers around the world. Through the laptop that sits on a desk near the front window, he accesses, monitors and updates his Website, andreiart.com.

Lovely bright and fun paintings by Lowell Herrero!

His work consists of nice landscapes and seascapes, lovable persons, sweet cats, cows and farm animals, all in beautiful colors.
In this album you also find a photo of the artist with some of his paintings. When I saw this photo, I realized how big these paintings are.

He is 92 years old, and still painting! Wow!

    About Lowell Herrero (1921- ):
Throughout a dynamic life that has spanned the Great Depression, the Second World War, the rise of Silicon Valley, and the dawn of the twenty-first century, Lowell Herrero has turned his passion for living into art. From his home in California, he has traveled to Tuscany, Provence, and Spain, absorbing the lessons of their sensuous landscapes. The colors of horizons and rich earth, the sensations of sunlight, and the fragrance of flower-covered hillsides mingle in his imagination and flow through his paintbrush onto his canvases.
Herrero feels a deep affinity with farmers working the land. He renders them bursting with life, over-large, and enduring — extensions of the very soil they cultivate. In his paintings, vineyards stretch into the distance as grape pickers enjoy lunch under a cloudless blue sky. Lavender harvesters bend to their task, and a field of rolled bales tells us the hard work of haying is at an end. Each painting invites us to smile with pleasure and enjoy the inner vitality and plenitude of the landscape. But above all, the paintings project the irrepressible joie de vivre of an artist who knows how to live. (lowellherrero.com)

Amazing Massive Pencil Murals by Adonna Khare

After beating out over 1,600 works to take home the grand prize at last year's ArtPrize competition, Adonna Khare is back with a brand new selection of works. In the Clouds, where the Glendale, California-born artist shows off new, highly detailed drawings of her favorite subject, animals.

In the album: last years work that won the ArtPrize and the new work from 2013. Also check out the video! link below.

"Adonna Khare's new drawings are whimsical, meticulous, solemn, playful, and humorous. Filled with an array of complex narratives, Khare's drawings make it easy to abandon the world around you and delve into her mystifying world of Bears, Antelopes, Chimp, Bunnies and Butterflies. Backgrounds filled with tornadoes, whirlpools, waterfalls and storm clouds represent life's unpredictability, ever-evolving change, and the unknown. All of Khare's animals caught in the foreground of a storm brewing behind them, a storm of change and uncertainty; once it arrives you don't know whether there will be severe damage or you'll come out unscathed and better off."

A video was just released that gives you a great behind-the-scenes look at the artist's life. Love how there's so much personal meaning to each of her pieces (and also love her adorable "life models.")

Artist Yasmina Alaoui and photographer Marco Guerra love to tantalize their audience.  In their life-sized photographic series “one thousand and one dreams”, statuesque bodies appear frozen in time, covered from head to toe in meticulously detailed, contemporary Arabic Henna patters.  Captivated by the realism and sculptural quality of each human form, the viewer becomes lost in an illusion.  Each artwork begins with a black and white nude photograph by Guerra.  Layers of Alaoui’s complex ink drawings are then fused with the portrait, with breathtaking results.  Originally from Chile and Morocco respectively, the couple has been collaborating since 2005, and have successfully been exhibited and collected internationally.

Poster Art 3.: Amazing art deco style social media posters by Aaron Wood

    Aaron Wood about himself:
Hello! My name is Aaron Wood and I'm a graphic designer. When I'm not working my day job, my brain is working overtime to create interesting and exciting art. I want my designs to get people talking. To make them think.

I feel the most comfortable working digitally, but from time to time I do pick up a pencil or pen and create a finished hand drawn piece.

Melancholy week 3.: Beautiful paintings by Victor Wang!

Paintings I really love! The atmosphere, the colors and beauty of the women that are displayed. Magnificent!

    Artist Statement
My path through life has been adventurous, exciting, and dream-like. My experience of settling into America in search of better opportunities has been both challenging and inspiring. I use the human face as a vehicle to paint human experiences - worry and wonder, sadness and pleasure - which reflect the emotional stage directly tied to my immigration experiences.

I grew up amongst the sunflower fields in northern China. In my childhood years, I played under the bright, yellow sunflowers with my brothers everyday. China’s Cultural Revolution played an important part in my life. During that time, sunflowers were used as political allegories to depict how citizens of China should follow Mao who represented the sun, since sunflowers follow the sun’s movements. People eventually inferred the deception that this symbol masked. After graduating from high school, I was sent to a labor camp in the country for ‘reeducation’ during China’s Cultural Revolution. There, I was subject to grueling farm work. Often, I worked in corn and sunflower fields from sunrise to sunset. Thus, for me, sunflowers evoke both personal joy and sadness. Therefore, to deliver my complex feelings, I use sunflowers as a metaphor to connote my background and emotional stage.

My incorporation of collages of figures from China’s Tang Dynasty represents my Chinese heritage and is a constant reminder of where I came from. The texture and earthiness on the canvas’s surface are inspired by the texture of the soil on the farm where I worked in China.

Although I often gain great pleasure from the process of painting, it is most important to unfold expressively those feelings within myself.

Scotland week 6.: Beautiful Scottish landscapes by Bruce Percy

First: +Bruce Percy is on Google plus. I'm sorry to say he isn't very active.

    Bruce about himself:
I was born in 1967 to Scottish parents from Sutherland. My father is from Golspie while my mother is from Embo.

    I live in Edinburgh.

I've always been drawn to the arts: drawing and painting as a kid, music composition as a teenager and photography as an adult.
My Photography interest was born out of an introduction in the late eighties by a friend that I've known since high school when he purchased a brand new Pentax ME Super.

The same friend introduced me to Ansel Adams work and his enthusiasm for what Adams had created drew me in. I was hooked.

As I've grown older, I've found that I'm much more attracted to the wilderness and the people that live on the edges of it. Photography is a great way of getting closer to the land and the cultures that inhabit it.

    Publications:
My images have been published throughout the world in travel literature publications and on the front cover of various books.

I've written occasionally for some of the photography magazines in the past, about the process of photography which is an emotional art that connects the photographer to the land, not a fascination with equipment.

Beautiful paintings by Dutch painter Nico Vrielink 1

Posting some "classic" paintings by Nico Vrielink. I'll make an other post really soon!

Nico Vrielink is an esteemed painter born in 1958 in Reusel in the south part of the Netherlands. He was educated at an Academie of Art in Belgium to become a teacher. But teaching wasn’t his cup of tea and since 1984 he has been working as an artist. A year later, in 1985 Nico met his wife Jeane Seah in Singapore. It was love at first sight and since the day he started painting her, he has never stopped doing so. Nico has made more than 5,000 paintings of Jeane.

Andreas Preis is a designer and illustrator from Berlin, Germany.

    Andreas about these works:
Because a lot of people asked: No, I didn't use illustrator for this. There are some minor vector graphics which I made in Photoshop. At least 95% of what you see here is done by hand with pencils and fineliners. Colors and structures were added in Photoshop afterwards.

    English
An album with 4 not so sharp pictures of a tiny kitten. It gets the bottle because her life has had a difficult start. We cross our fingers that she'll live.
Mother cat was very young when she had a litter of 3 young. She was not ready and left them. A former student of our school then thought immediately of the teacher animal care at our school. And of course, Tanja said Yes! immediately . A big job, because they need to be bottle fed  every 2 hours. One of the kittens looked weak from the beginning. It died very quickly. But the biggest one that initially did well did not make it either. Only this little girl is still with us. It all seems well at the moment. But only time will tell if she'll make it.

If you like it, I keep you informed.

Amazing paintings by John Atkinson Grimshaw: light and night

I love the light, the details and the colors!

John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 1893) was a Victorian-era artist, a "remarkable and imaginative painter" known for his city night-scenes and landscapes. He was born in Leeds. In 1861, at the age of 24, he left his job as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway to become a painter. His primary influence was the Pre-Raphaelites. True to the Pre-Raphaelite style, he created landscapes of accurate color, lighting, vivid detail, and realism.

He painted landscapes that typified seasons or a type of weather; city and suburban street scenes and moonlit views of the docks in London, Leeds, Liverpool, and Glasgow also figured largely in his art. He depicted the contemporary world but eschewed the dirty and depressing aspects of industrial towns. His careful painting and skill in lighting effects meant that he captured both the appearance and the mood of a scene in minute detail.

    Carel Willink (1900 – 1983)

Wikipedia: Willink was a well known Dutch painter who called his style of Magic realism "imaginary realism". Willink was born in Amsterdam, the eldest son of the mechanic Jan Willink and Wilhelmina Altes. His father was an amateur artist who encouraged his son to paint. After briefly studying medicine, in 1918-19 Willink studied architecture at the Technische Hogeschool in Delft. Afterwards he left for Germany, where he failed to get into the academy in Düsseldorf. He later studied for a short time at the Staatliche Hochschule in Berlin. Willink's earliest paintings were in an expressionist manner, although he also painted abstract works at the time that he exhibited with the November group in 1923. By 1924 he had adopted a figurative style influenced by Picasso's neoclassical paintings of the early 1920s, and especially by Léger. Later in the decade, Willink developed a magic realist style related to the metaphysical paintings of Giorgio de Chirico. From 1935 until his death Willink lived in Amsterdam. His realistically rendered paintings frequently depict slightly disquieting scenes taking place in front of imposing buildings. He also painted many portraits.

I created this post because I saw a painting "Self-portrait with brush and white cloth" (1936) and Late bezoekers van Pompeï (1931) English "Late visitors to Pompeii" in Museum Boijmans van Beuningen last week.

    Google change that please!

At the moment I'm followed by someone who +1 all the pictures he likes in an album. Very sweet and nice, but Google+ makes a post of every photo that he gives a +1. Worthless, I hate that! I try to make my stream look good by an order of posts in certain topics. In this way it is disturbed. I get spammed with my own images. Baaaah!
It also happens with a comment. I also do not like it, but I can understand this. That would be easier if you want to have a conversation about that photo.
I have now deleted all the extra posts. I guess I lost all +1.

    Well, too bad :-(

Start photography and begin with your smartphone!
    or small digital camera ....

Start photography today and it makes you see the beautiful things around you! It'll open your eyes to things you never saw before!

On my page +Anja Wessels: 't Is zo, people often ask: What kind of camera should I buy to start photography. My answer: Do you have a small digital camera or a smartphone with a reasonable camera, then don't buy anything. Just start! Ensure that you first know what you want to shoot, practice with what you have. Only when you know what you want to shoot you buy the appropriate camera and lens.

The pictures in the blog below Mobile Photography Awards showcase stunning smartphone art show the amazing things you can do!

    Popularity of the Dutch masters

yesterday I visited the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I saw the amazing paintings by Dutch masters like Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Van Gogh, Jan Steen etc.

In the album you see some paintings and photos I made to give you an impression how it was. You can see the large amount of visitors trying to see the masters. And we were lucky! It wasn't as busy as the week before. We did't have to wait 3 hours to enter the museum!
Last Sunday there 25.000 visitors in one day.

We spend 5 hours in the museum. We didn't see all the works.

If you're ever in Amsterdam, go to the Rijksmuseum, oh and the van Gogh  Museum and the Stedelijk museum and the Hermitage and and and ....

I'm looking forward to this day. I realy want to see the paintings and it is great to see them with Ellis. Ellis has been a friend for 38 years and we're always having loads of fun :-)

    Beautiful paintings by Jeremy Mann

    About Jeremy Mann:
Jeremy Mann(b. 1979) graduated from Ohio University with a Cum Laude degree in Fine Art-Painting. Afterward, he ventured out to California where he earned his MasterÕs Degree with Valedictorian honors at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Since then, Mann has garnered substantial attention in the art world. Praised by critics and collectors alike, his work recently graced the cover of American Art Collector magazine.

Executed on medium to large-scale panels, each exciting work demonstrates the artist's unmistakable style. Working on wood panels provides a strong support, where Mann can utilize a number of techniques: staining the surface, wiping away paint with solvents, and applying broad, gritty marks with an ink brayer. Mann paints with confidence and flair. He addresses complex compositions with a mature eye and his colors are both vivid and atmospheric.

Living in downtown San Francisco, Mann paints his immediate surroundings with intimate, dynamic expression. A number of unique compositions are inspired from the city's pavement, where reflected street lamps and neon signs glitter in the rain. In each work, Mann imbues the city with drama, mood, and personality..

Ever ambitious, Mann covers a wide range of subjects beyond cityscapes: interior scenes of lone, young women as striking and restless as the city itself; a bold and intriguing self-portrait, masterful still life paintings, and pastoral scenes that recall the landscape of his hometown.

Amazing wooden sculptures by Willy Verginer!

I really love these sculptures. They all look so realistic and they all have a surreal twist. The way they are painted, very very straight and sleek, make these sculptures look so beautiful and special. I'd love to have one!

The intricate works from the Italian artist are carved usually from a single piece of wood featuring people interacting with inanimate objects or animals in some interesting positions. Often the pieces are accented by ornate floral elements or segmented colors lending them a sense of whimsy.

Beautiful  and fun cat paintings by Charles Wysocki

A painter that has become a subject for calenders en puzzles. His paintings are playful and fun. you can't do anything but smile, when you look at them.

    A #caturday post :-)

Charles M. Wysocki, Jr. (November 16, 1928–July 29, 2002) was an American painter, whose works depict a stylized version of American life of yesteryear. While some of his works show horseless carriages, most depict the horse and buggy era. (Wikipedia)

Melancholy week 3.: Colorful paintings by Helena Wierzbicki

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Studied with the Argentine masters Luis Barragan and Elio Eros Vitali. Participated in many Art shows, locally and abroad. When in USA, exhibited in an important East Coast gallery. Last exhibition at the Salon de Arte Argentino Actual, at the Sivori Museum, Centro Cultural Recoleta.
She feels passion for painting and does it almost in a compulsive way on canvas, presently using oil and acrylic.

'Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures...'

    Artist's Statement:
'I have always enjoyed art from an early age. This love of Art has stayed with me and developed and grown, and now, I cannot imagine wanting to do anything else. Making art for me, is an innate response to the inner and outer worlds, and a balancing act between the intuitive and the considered. I am interested in exploring my natural abilities and enthusiasm for my commitment to do an art within my innermost thoughts and emotions.
My art is an evolving process, I take and represent only elements which are the essence of the object or of the imaginary being. I rely on my desires for beauty, poetics and seduction.'

    Dalí week 3.: Unexpected Dalí

Dalí was an amazing artist. Most only remember him by his appearance and his surrealist paintings, but he is so much more! I'm posting an album with a selection of my favorite paintings you might not expect to be by Dalí. Different techniques and movements. For example: Cubism Pointillism Realism.

There is much more. Please have a look at Wiki paintings, otherwise you only see what I like :-)

Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam week 1.: The Beanery by Edward Kienholz

It may happen that you are somewhere in the Stedelijk Museum and suddenly you're in the middle of a bar called The Original Beanery. There is music, glass shattering and murmur of voices. Inside there are people hanging at a bar, a girl with long blond hair and a striped sweater and a man. People? They do have regular clothes but at the place of their face is a clock.

    Read all about the Beanery:

    Restoration
After in-depth examination, one of the most popular works in the Stedelijk Museum collection, The Beanery (1965) by Edward Kienholz, was fully restored for the first time by the museum staff working in its new facilities.

As the installation comprises a variety of materials – for instance, the artist coated the entire installation in a synthetic liquid resin – this was a complex operation. In anticipation of the grand reopening on September 23, the Stedelijk is preparing and restoring a number of its best-loved artworks so that visitors to the museum will be able to enjoy these cherished icons once more.

Sedlec Ossuary, or when your ancestors still "hang around" in the church.

What you see is real. A real church decorated with real bones. A practicle solution to a space problem on the cemetery.

    Wikipedia (=source):
The Sedlec Ossuary (Czech: Kostnice v Sedlci) is a small Roman Catholic chapel, located beneath the Cemetery Church of All Saints in Sedlec, a suburb of Kutná Hora in the Czech Republic. The ossuary is estimated to contain the skeletons of between 40,000 and 70,000 people, whose bones have in many cases been artistically arranged to form decorations and furnishings for the chapel. The ossuary is among the most visited tourist attractions of the Czech Republic, attracting over 200,000 visitors yearly.
Four enormous bell-shaped mounds occupy the corners of the chapel. An enormous chandelier of bones, which contains at least one of every bone in the human body, hangs from the center of the nave with garlands of skulls draping the vault. Other works include piers and monstrances flanking the altar, a large Schwarzenberg coat of arms, and the signature of Rint, also executed in bone, on the wall near the entrance.
In 1278, Henry, the abbot of the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec, was sent to the Holy Land by King Otakar II of Bohemia. He returned with him a small amount of earth he had removed from Golgotha and sprinkled it over the abbey cemetery. The word of this pious act soon spread and the cemetery in Sedlec became a desirable burial site throughout Central Europe.
In the mid 14th century, during the Black Death, and after the Hussite Wars in the early 15th century, many thousands were buried in the abbey cemetery, so it had to be greatly enlarged.
Around 1400, a Gothic church was built in the center of the cemetery with a vaulted upper level and a lower chapel to be used as an ossuary for the mass graves unearthed during construction, or simply slated for demolition to make room for new burials.
After 1511, the task of exhuming skeletons and stacking their bones in the chapel was given to a half-blind monk of the order.
Between 1703 and 1710, a new entrance was constructed to support the front wall, which was leaning outward, and the upper chapel was rebuilt. This work, in the Czech Baroque style, was designed by Jan Santini Aichel.
In 1870, František Rint, a woodcarver, was employed by the Schwarzenberg family to put the bone heaps into order, yielding a macabre result.

alwaar Abraham Reiss door de Nazi´s werd vergast

Jeroen Krabbe schilderde deze doeken op basis van brieven van zijn moeder:
