Taum Sauk Hydroelectric Power Station, Missouri ... Amusing Planet -- "Hydroelectric power stations are typically located near water sources, or on the source itself, such as dams on rivers. But Taum Sauk Hydroelectric Power Station is located more than 80 kilometers from the nearest water source – the Mississippi river. Built on top of the mountainous St. Francois region of the Missouri Ozarks, approximately 140 km south of St. Louis near Lesterville, Missouri, the Taum Sauk Hydroelectric Power Station is a pure pumped-storage hydroelectric plant, designed to help meet peak power demands during the day. During periods of high electrical demand, water stored in a kidney-shaped reservoir on top of Proffit Mountain is released through turbines into a lower reservoir, two kilometers away, on the East Fork of the Black River. At night, when electrical demand is low, the excess electricity available on the power grid is used to pump water back to the mountaintop. In essence, the power plant functions like a huge battery, storing excess power until it is needed. ..."

    RESHARE:
In Syria, sleeping between his parents.

I wanted to share this with you because it served as such a potent reminder of why I do what I do. My family has been shaped by war; everyone's lives were shaped by the wars they survived (and others didn't), by the places they fled to, by the fears of other wars to come.

Our world is broken. It is broken in so many ways that sometimes it's hard to count. This is the consequence of things we cannot control: of the lack of infinite resources, of our natural tendencies to want to protect ourselves at the expense of others, of history, of habit. It is the consequence of a universe with free will in it.

These are things we can change. We have exceptional power in the world: not infinite power, but some power in each of our hands, and great power combined. If we have any useful purpose, it is to fix the evils of the world.

The Rabbis tell us that on the day the Messiah comes, we will all be instituted into perfect health, want will be eliminated from the world, and a regime of perfect justice will be instituted: and that on that day, nobody will notice, because the condition for the Messiah to come is that we will have first created, by our own hands, the Messianic kingdom in the world.

This is not an easy task, nor is it one we should expect to achieve in our lifetimes. That's OK. But it is important to work towards it, every day.

Not all of these things are obvious. It's not hard to guess what a teacher or a doctor does to repair the world, but that's only a small part of it. The construction worker who builds a house with all of his abilities, the parent who raises a child to be kind and thoughtful, the writer who puts our thoughts into words so that we can understand ourselves better, the public servant who honestly and diligently works to create justice and wealth, the scientist who adds to our store of knowledge and opens new doors of understanding, all help to build up the world. And the builder who leaves something shoddy because nobody will ever know, the parent who encourages their child's baser instincts, the propagandist, the corrupt official, all take down the work that the rest of us are trying to build.

I'm sharing this image with you because you should never, in all the days of your life, forget the stakes of what we do. Will the things we build prevent this? Will they comfort the child, help him in the days that are to come? What could we have done differently, and what can we do in the future?

Think about these things night and day: write them on the doors of your house, hold them in front of your eyes. Spend your time thinking about the choices you make individually and the choices we make as a society: are these the choices which will lead to the best consequences? Why? Why not? Debate these things every day with your friends and your family, and with strangers and people who disagree with you. Make your work an offering, every day, towards the repair of the world.

The Mishna says: It is not yours to finish the task, but neither are you free to set it aside. Never forget that.

    "The Illuminated Steel Jungle"
    Dubai, UAE

    My Favorite Images of 2013
    http://bit.ly/2013YearinReflection

Standing at 2,722 ft (828.8m), the Burj Khalifa is easily the tallest building in the world. Located in one the most illustrious cities in the world, this massive building lives in what I call "The Steel Jungle", otherwise known as Dubai. While this type of photography is generally outside my comfort zone, it is always fun to try new things. While I might feel more at home working with the Masaai in East Africa or exploring Buddhist temples in Myanmar, to truly enjoyed my time exploring a new kind of jungle. My new found friends, +Beno Saradzic  and +Daniel Cheong  were incredibly kind in showing me around town and taking me to some of the best spots to capture Dubai in all her glory.

    Photo Details:
    Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
Lens: Nikon 14-24 w/ novoflex adapter
    ISO: 100
Exposure: f/8 at various exposures (toping out at 215 seconds)

When it came to edit this image, I took 5 images of various exposures that I captured using the bulb mode on my Mark III and blended them together using +Adobe Photoshop's HDR Pro to create a 32bit image. From there, I opened up ACR in PS as a smart layer and begin bringing the exposure to the right levels. After some simple stylizing in +onOne Software's Perfect Effects 8 and Nik Software's Color Efex Pro, I used luminosity blending to bring in the mid tones of some of my original images, giving a more natural feel to the stylized image. Lasting I added some noise reduction and sharpening layers in PS, once again selecting pixels based on luminosity in order to only apply sharpening to specific mid tone pixels and noise reduction only to the shadowed parts of my image.

    RESHARE:
    What goes around, comes around

On September 3, 2002, an amateur astronomer named Bill Yeung looked into his telescope and discovered a strange object near Earth.  Experts were surprised to discover that it was orbiting Earth!  The orbit was unstable, which meant this object hadn't been here long.  But there was no recently launched spacecraft that matched the orbit of this thing!

It got the name J002E3.  It's fun to watch this animated gif and see how J002E3 came in from the Lagrange point L1 between the Earth and Sun, went around the Earth a few times, and then got kicked out.

    But what was it?

University of Arizona astronomers found that its electromagnetic spectrum was consistent with white titanium dioxide paint - the same paint used by NASA for the Saturn V rockets. Tracing back its orbit, they found that it had probably been orbiting the Sun for 31 years.  The last time it was near Earth was1971.

This seemed to suggest that it was a part of the Apollo 14 mission. But NASA knew the whereabouts of all hardware used for this mission!  The third stage of that rocket, for example, was deliberately crashed into the Moon for seismic studies.

So, the most likely explanation seems to be that J002E3 is the third stage of the rocket for Apollo 12.  NASA originally planned to shoot this into an orbit around the Sun.  But they used more of the propellant than planned, and it seems that venting the rest didn't give this rocket stage enough energy to escape the Earth–Moon system.   So, it ended up in a complicated orbit around the Earth after passing by the Moon on November 18, 1969.

It may hit earth someday!   It weighs 10 tonnes.  But don't worry: a 10-tonne meteor hits the Earth every few years, and most of them don't cause much trouble.

I saw this animated gif without much explanation last night on G+.  Who should I thank?   The explanation here is adapted from Wikipedia:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J002E3

and the animated gif was made by Paul Chodas & Ron Baalke of NASA.

I like to imagine that there's usually an elegant solution to most challenges we face in any endeavor, if we use strategy and perseverance. I've written articles about how to apply that attitude to succeed at photography, such as this one:

Wally's skills at moving large, heavy objects by himself exemplify the ability to conquer difficulties through ingenuity.

    Gary's Faves 2013 #8

Another one of my favorite photos that I made during 2013.

    --------

Alaska is an incredible place. I'm so glad that I was finally able to visit there. Having a good guide to show me around sure helped. :)

This photo is indeed one of my favorites, and may be close to being my favorite for the year.

It is funny how one can plan for days to make a trip to a location to get some grand photos and then have nothing work, and yet be riding along in a car just enjoying the scenery as it passes when a photograph suddenly appears right before your eyes.

On this day Darlene and I were driving along the Turnagain Arm outside of Anchorage. I was in the passenger seat with my camera on my lap like I normally do in case something appears that I may want to get a snap of. The light was flat and I wasn't too hopeful for anything epic.

The Turnagain Arm is known for its bore tide, when the incoming tide meets the outflow of water and creates a rolling wave that works its way up the arm. Surfers have figured out that they can ride this wave as it goes on for miles up the inlet. This particular photo shows a surfer making his way across the mud flats to deeper water to catch the bore tide wave. A thin film of water makes the perfect mirror surface. If you look closely you can see the texture of the Kenai Mountain range behind him reflected as well.

When I caught this scene out of the corner of my eye I immediately yelled "STOP". Of course when you're driving down a road with cars following it isn't always practical to just slam on your brakes, but Darlene flipped her signal on and luckily found a wide spot and pulled over. The spot was a bit further down the road than I would have liked but I quickly sized up a comp and shot some frames. I looked at the preview and realized that the wide lens made him small and included way too much around him. I switched lenses quickly, recompose to isolate him within the reflection and boom!!... it worked. I was very happy with what I saw on the preview screen. I hopped back into the car and we took off again.

This shot is just as I photographed it. There is no adjustments or cropping done. Sometimes things work out unexpectedly well, even when one is unprepared. :) #alaska   #turnagainarm   #boretide   #surfer   #reflection   #garyrandallphotography

    RESHARE:

Water seemingly rolling uphill Leidenfrost effect

When a drop of water hits a very hot surface, the drop's outer layer vaporizes, producing an insulating effect that causes it to skitter across a hot surface. This is known as the Leidenfrost effect. When water droplets hit a hot but smooth surface they tend to hop about in quite random directions, but researchers have found that when that hot surface has a saw-tooth-like texture, the droplets are only propelled in one direction. When contained and heated in an all-metal maze that's covered with a saw-tooth texture, it appears as if tiny droplets of water are able to navigate its complex design all by themselves.

Students Carmen Cheng and Matthew Guy used this Leidenfrost effect to build their Leidenfrost Maze, used in workshops and events with local school children: http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/2013/09/05/leidenfrost-maze/

With the New Year upon us, what can we look forward to in 2014? For me, the main event of 2014 is that ESA's Rosetta mission finally -- finally! -- catches up to the comet it has been chasing for a decade. We will lose LADEE, gain two Mars orbiters, and launch Hayabusa 2. The year begins with an amazing 24 spacecraft exploring or cruising toward various planetary destinations.

    Snowflake-a-Day #21

This snowflake has some unique features in the center, definitely worth taking a closer look! It's a split crystal design, but the inner smaller crystal also has branches! In fact, they have grown to almost the exact same size as the inner hexagonal shape on the lower level. How cool!

Snowflake physics aside, I think it's a beautiful crystal - concrete symmetry in the center that gives way to more erratic and organic patterns the further out you look. Some unusual side-branches are also perfectly straight with no features or additional branching. It's not often you see that, but it reinforces the idea that no two snowflakes are alike. :)

This image consists of 34 separate frames required for focus-stacking. Only a small slice of the crystal is in focus in any one frame, so a combination of multiple images are required to bring the entire snowflake in focus. Because all of my snowflake images are shot entirely handheld, I drastically overshoot the subject to be 100% sure I've gotten every piece I need. 240 images of this snowflake were taken in total, with roughly the first 10 spent on achieving the proper reflective angle to make it shine.
