Om Nom Nom Nom -- A tiny thrips stuffs granules of pollen into his mouth with both "hands" while perched on the stamen of a tiny white flower. After each mouthful he would gather another armload of pollen and munch busily away at it while appearing to curiously regard the photographer. I wonder what was going through his tiny mind. Probably not much... Most thrips ( (Order Thysanoptera ) are about 1mm long and feed on a large variety of sources, both plant and animal. They are one of the most ubiquitous Arthropods on Earth, but are so tiny that you rarely notice them. Taking floral macros is one good way to find them. :)

Humble Beauty -- It's probably fair to say that the dandelion is one of the most hated "weeds" in the world. It is also one of the most beautiful. I love the golden glow of those delicate yellow curlicues rising from the center of that lush spread of tiny petals. Rabbits love them too, for slightly different reasons. :)

Brood II Is Alive -- Over the next few weeks, billions of cicadas will be emerging from the ground across a swath of the East Coast ranging from North Carolina to Connecticut. This particular brood of "17-year cicadas" have been biding their time underground since the Clinton administration in 1996. Scientists suspect that these insects adopted such a long life cycle as an evolutionary ploy to overwhelm their predators with sheer numbers and surprise. This photo shows a different species of cicada taken in the Midwest, but I wanted to pay tribute to Brood II as it emerges. :)

A large and very colorful Crawfish ( crawdad, crayfish ) takes a defensive posture as I slowly move the camera toward him to get a closer shot. Crawfish are freshwater crustaceans resembling small lobsters, and are mostly found in freshwater brooks and streams. They are very common in the Midwest - this was taken on a rural road in southern Illinois.

Mount Rainier -- Washington, U.S.A. --  Mount Rainier is a tall, conical volcano located about 50 miles southeast of Seattle, Washington. It is the most "topographically prominent" mountain in the contiguous U.S., with a vertical distance of 13,211 ft (4,027 m) between its summit and its lowest contour line, a prominence greater than that of K2 in the Himalayas. I have reached the summit of Mount Rainier four times by various routes.

A large Turkey Tail Fungus ( Trametes versicolor ) fans out around a branch on a fallen maple tree in southern Illinois. These thick, papery polypore fungi are ubiquitous in the American Midwest and can be quite colorful. In China and Japan, a chemical compound extracted from this species, polysaccharide-K, is used as a therapy for cancer.

Varia Expansum -- This is a nighttime infrared and color-tweaked image of a fern frond in central Costa Rica. The title means colorful spread in Latin.

Legendary Horses To Be Slaughtered -- I have very rarely posted anything but my own photos, but I found this story especially saddening to the point where I thought I'd pass this along just in case there are any folks out there in a position to help in any way. The story appears legitimate as far as I can tell, and (to me, at least) is incredibly disheartening. The cost to transport a horse to the U.S. would undoubtedly be incredibly high, but there might be some Europeans out there who might be interested in taking one or more of these horses in. If you know anyone who might be interested in doing so, please pass this along.

Bighorn Mountain -- Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado -- This was taken a few weeks ago when the snow cover was disappointingly light, bringing worries of summer drought. Snowpack data for the Upper Colorado River Basin show this year's snow water equivalent is about 73 percent of normal, but those figures don't include this week's storm which brought one of the largest April snowfalls that I can remember in 20 years. So there's hope. :)

The Dark Places Of The Earth -- Eden Falls Cave, Arkansas -- I liked the abstract quality of the colors, layers, shapes, and shadows in this subterranean passageway deep beneath the ground in northwestern Arkansas. The "scallops" on the walls were created by turbulent water flow over the limestone of the cave. As a general rule, the smaller the scallops the faster-flowing was the water that carved them. They are generally asymmetrical, with their upstream end steeper than the downstream end. Directly behind me (as I was taking this photo), the passage emerged into the top of a large cavern about 100 feet high, and the stream flowing along the bottom of the passage plunged over the edge, forming a waterfall. It was a very dangerous spot, so I carefully inched my way to the edge so that I could turn around and take this shot. :)

Power Whiteout -- Loveland, Colorado -- This is what it looked like just two days ago in northern Colorado. Longs Peak and the surrounding foothills usually dominate the background in this scene. On this blizzard day, visibility was considerably less than a mile. Note the "black ice" on the road.

So Many Worlds, So Little Time -- Fort Collins, Colorado -- If you look at this full screen, you can just see a tiny, whitish springtail near the center of the leaf. Springtails are so named because they have an abdominal, tail-like appendage called a furcula that is folded beneath their body, and which they activate like a spring for jumping when they feel threatened.

The Gravity Of Silence -- Fort Collins, Colorado -- A bay mare paws through the snow to find forage during a blizzard. We have over a foot of snow on the ground in Fort Collins right now from one of the largest April snow storms that I can remember. With the sound-dampening effect of so much snow, everything is eerily quiet around here. Very nice... :)

A small Sphinx Moth ( family Sphingidae ) sits on the tip of my finger while I snap a few photos. These are absolutely beautiful moths, and are frequent visitors to my back porch light in Fort Collins, Colorado.
