A Rufous Hummingbird ( Selasphorus rufus ) cautiously regards the photographer from his perch on a feeder. These colorful little fellows are fiercely territorial and have incredible aerial battles that are amazing to watch. After a few days of trying, I actually got one to perch on my finger while he drank from the feeder. Unfortunately, I couldn't hold the camera at the same time. :)

The Gravity Of Silence -- Fort Collins, Colorado -- A bay mare paws through the snow to find forage during a blizzard. We have over a foot of snow on the ground in Fort Collins right now from one of the largest April snow storms that I can remember. With the sound-dampening effect of so much snow, everything is eerily quiet around here. Very nice... :)

This is the Destruction Island Lighthouse off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. From www.lighthousefriends.com: "In 1775, while at anchor under the lee of the island, the Spanish explorer Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, commander of the schooner Sonora, sent seven men ashore for wood and water. Upon landing, the entire party was killed by Indians, prompting Bodega y Quadra to name the island 'Isla de Dolores,' Isle of Sorrow. The British ship Imperial Eagle visited the island in 1787 and dispatched a long boat to explore the nearby coast. During the exploration, the crew rowed some distance up a river where they too were massacred by hostile Indians. Charles W. Barkley, captain of the Imperial Eagle, named the river Destruction. The name was eventually transferred to the nearby island, and the river was called by its Indian name Hoh."

Bighorn Mountain -- Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado -- This was taken a few weeks ago when the snow cover was disappointingly light, bringing worries of summer drought. Snowpack data for the Upper Colorado River Basin show this year's snow water equivalent is about 73 percent of normal, but those figures don't include this week's storm which brought one of the largest April snowfalls that I can remember in 20 years. So there's hope. :)

Smoke On The Water, Fire In The Sky -- Loveland, Colorado
















This was taken this past summer during the High Park Fire, the largest and most destructive wildfire in Colorado history at the time, which started just outside Fort Collins to the west. For weeks, the sky was colored in apocalyptic hues because of the smoke. I grabbed this shot during the second week of the fire.
